SEE THE WORLD WHILE YOU STUDYAt Melbourne, we encourage and support our students to undertake part of their studies overseas through student exchange or the study abroad program. You can receive credit and fulfil academic and/or practical work requirements for your degree through a variety of approved programs all over the world.

Beyond our list of formal exchange partners (see pages 22–26) and the semester-long study abroad possibilities, there are an increasing number of short-term overseas study opportunities available, including intensive subjects, international internship subjects, as well as opportunities to undertake research.

Our students have undertaken research at Europe’s oldest university in Bologna, studied French in Quebec, developed their knowledge of physics in Japan, learnt about management in the fashion industry in Milan, and developed their community service skills in Chile. As a student at Melbourne, you can study at some of the world’s most prestigious institutions. This will provide you with a competitive edge when you enter the workforce, as employers are always looking for international experience, but best of all, you’ll have an amazing time!

Melbourne Global MobilityMelbourne Global Mobility can assist you to arrange your overseas study. This is a great way to immerse yourself in a completely different social, cultural and intellectual environment and gain a truly international experience during your studies.

One semester wasn’t long enough!

“Completing an exchange to King’s College provided the perfect experience of living and studying in London. Although it was set to be one of my most difficult undertakings yet, it has by far been the most rewarding.

The challenges ordinarily faced by any Biomedicine student became heightened while juggling a new culture, city and budding social life; but that’s not to say exchange isn’t worth it – it’s exactly the opposite!”Stephanie PotenzaBachelor of Biomedicine

EXCHANGEAs an exchange student, you swap places with a student from the overseas institution you choose. In other words, that student studies in your place at the University of Melbourne. See pages 22–26 for a list of overseas institutions with which we have an exchange agreement.

STUDY ABROADStudy abroad lets you study at an overseas institution that does not have an exchange agreement with the University of Melbourne.

Apply for a tailored study abroad or exchange program through the University of Melbourne.

OTHER OPTIONS FOR STUDYING OVERSEASYou can also complete part of your degree requirements overseas through short courses over the summer or winter (completed either through exchange or study abroad), single subjects taught by an Australian university overseas, placements, practica, work experience and internships.

CREDIT FOR OVERSEAS STUDYWhen you undertake approved study overseas, you receive credit or fulfil a hurdle requirement towards your degree. You need approval from your Student Centre for all subjects you plan to undertake on exchange or study abroad prior to departure. Any change of subjects while you are overseas must also be approved by your Student Centre.

GRADES FOR OVERSEAS STUDY There is usually no transfer of marks from your exchange or study abroad studies. Only the credit load you undertake is applied to your University of Melbourne degree. Some exceptions apply. Speak to your Student Centre if you are concerned about the implications for honours or future graduate study.

You will receive a transcript from your host institution, which forms part of the record of your tertiary study, together with your University of Melbourne transcript.Q

Students participating in a University of Melbourne overseas subject will be assessed and awarded marks in the same way as University of Melbourne subjects taught entirely on campus.

Q Transcripts take time to arrive from partner institutions – in some cases up to several months. If you are hoping to apply for further study, graduation or employment at the end of your exchange, include this delay in your planning.

You’ll need a lot of documentation and information when preparing for your overseas study. Keep all your papers together so you can find materials easily. Remember to keep copies of your whole application, especially your study plan. Don’t throw anything away until you get back from overseas and you are satisfied your transcript is correct and your credit has been awarded.

How to apply for exchange

OVERSEAS ACADEMIC CALENDARMost partner institutions operate on a two semester system. The northern hemisphere academic year usually begins later in the year. Here’s a guide to semester equivalents:

March Semester July Semester

Melbourne February – June* July – November

Canada/USA January – May September – December*

UK January – June September – January*

Europe February – June October – February*

China/Taiwan February – July* September – January*

Japan April – July* October – March

Thailand June – October* November – March

Chile March – July* August – December

Where partners operate on a term or quarter system, students will be expected to undertake: Two terms/quarters = 1 Melbourne semester Three terms/quarters = 2 Melbourne semesters

More specific information about each partner’s calendar is listed in the ‘Credit Load Equivalents Table’ on the MGM website.

* Indicates beginning of the academic year.

Choosing your study destination will take some research. Choose your institution for its academic reputation as well as location. Speak with your lecturers and tutors about your exchange and get their opinion on appropriate destinations. Often institutions will excel in particular areas of study. Look at the ‘Helpful Links’ section of the MGM website.

USEFUL TIPTo find out more: You must attend a myWorld First

Step session run by Melbourne Global Mobility. This session is compulsory and your exchange application will not be accepted if you have not attended this session. Register for MGM information sessions at:

studentexchange.unimelb.edu.au/StudentExchangeEvents.aspx

You can also attend sessions run by Student Centres about specific countries or institutions. Register for various information sessions at:

studentexchange.unimelb.edu.au/StudentExchangeEvents.aspx

Speak to your Student Centre about exchange opportunities, choosing a program and the requirements you should consider when planning your studies overseas Research the destinations you’re

considering – web links and any relevant restrictions are in the Partner List online, and more information is available in the MGM Resource Room Talk to students who have returned

from exchange. Melbourne Global Mobility staff can often put you in contact with students who have studied at your chosen institution.

1. Planning your application Plan your exchange at least six to twelve months before you want to take part. Research where you want to go and what you can do.

8634-OFFADM_SAEX_Outbound.indd 8 3/7/13 10:20 AM

Page 9: MGM Brochure2014

If you are a double degree student seeking credit for both degrees, submit your application to one Student Centre by the due date and it will then be passed to the second Student Centre for approval.

Your application must include:

ACADEMIC REFERENCEObtain one academic reference using the form provided. The reference is confidential and must be from a lecturer or tutor who has taught you recently in the degree or diploma for which you are seeking credit for your exchange. Double degree students seeking credit for both degrees while on exchange need only obtain one reference from one discipline area.

Referees must print the reference on letterhead, sign it and send it directly to the relevant Student Centre with the completed, signed reference form by the closing date for exchange applications. It is your responsibility to ensure that your referee submits the form to the staff member in the Student Centre who will receive the rest of your completed application.

In some cases two academic references may be required by the host institution. Melbourne Global Mobility staff will advise you if this is required.

STUDY PLANYour Student Centre must approve your study plan before you depart to ensure that the subjects you undertake on exchange will be credited to your University of Melbourne degree when you return. In the study plan, list all the host institution subjects that you propose to undertake while on exchange.

You are required to undertake at least a full-time load (37.5 points per semester/75 points per year) while on exchange. To fulfil this requirement you must take an equivalent load at your host institution (see ‘Credit Load Equivalents Table’ on the MGM website). Exceptions to this must be approved by both your Student Centre and Melbourne Global Mobility staff.

To enable your Student Centre to approve your subjects, you need to supply supporting information about the host institution subjects obtained from handbooks, websites and the

partner institution. Essential information about each subject should include:

Prerequisites Contact hours per week and for how

many weeks (some host institutions use a trimester, term or quarter system rather than a semester system) Assessment tasks, such as ‘one 2000-

word essay and a two-hour exam’ Subject descriptions, including a

reading list if possible.

Seek approval for more subjects than you intend to complete. You will then be able to substitute already approved subjects if one or more of your preferred subjects is cancelled or there are timetable clashes.

We recommend that you also provide study plans for your second and third choice of institution, however you don’t need to get them approved unless you change your preferences to one of those destinations.

EXCHANGE ESSAYYour exchange essay should be one to two pages long and outline your reasons for applying for exchange, such as: Why you want to go on exchange What you hope to get from the

experience Why you want to go to the

destination you have chosen.

RéSUMéProvide a summary of your relevant personal, academic and employment history.

PASSPORT PHOTOProvide a recent passport photo with your name and student ID number on the back.

PASSPORTProvide a copy of your passport details page with your application. If you do not have a current passport you should apply for one immediately through Australia Post or the embassy of your home country if you are an international student. If your passport is due to expire within six months of the end of your exchange you need to renew the passport and should start that process as soon as possible. In both cases you should note that you are doing so in your application. When the new passport arrives, please provide a copy of the details page to Melbourne Global Mobility.

Important dates

To travel in Semester 1, 2014: Applications close Friday 5 July 2013

Applications for the University of California (Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz campuses) and the University of Michigan close Friday 21 June 2013.

To travel in Semester 2, 2014: Applications close Friday 6 December 2013

Applications for the University of California (Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz campuses), the University of Michigan and for Music at McGill University close Friday 22 November 2013.

The length of your exchange depends on your financial and academic situation. It may also depend on the host institution. Most exchange agreements allow you to study for one or two semesters.

If possible, apply for a full year on exchange. Once accepted, it is easier to reduce your exchange length than to have it extended. If in doubt discuss this with a Melbourne Global Mobility adviser.

2. Completing your application Application forms are available in this brochure or from the MGM website. Completed application forms must be submitted to your Student Centre by the closing date.

You must obtain approval from: Your Student Centre/faculty/graduate

school Melbourne Global Mobility The host institution.

It will take approximately six months from the time of your initial application to confirm a place at an overseas institution of your choice. There are three parts in the selection process:

A: STUDENT CENTRE APPROVALStudent Centre approval is based on your eligibility, academic record, a suitable reference and other information as required in the application. Consideration may be given to your choice of course, institution, language (where appropriate) and general communication skills.

An interview may be required. Student Centres have the authority to redirect you to institutions other than your first preference.

Student Centres make their decision and then send all applications to Melbourne Global Mobility. This can take a few weeks.

You will be advised by letter or email whether your application has been successful once Melbourne Global Mobility have received it from the Student Centre/s.

B: NOMINATIONThere are four steps in this stage and it may take up to three months before you are asked to collect the host institution application form, and longer before you receive acceptance material from the host institution. Keep Melbourne Global Mobility staff informed of your current contact details.

1. Melbourne Global Mobility checks all applications.

2. Partners are consulted as to how many students they can consider for exchange. Melbourne Global Mobility aims to nominate you to your first preference institution, but sometimes there are too many applicants for a limited number of places, or a particular institution is not able to offer places at all. In this case we will nominate you to one of your alternative preferences instead.

For this reason it is important that you are prepared to go to any of the three institutions you place on your preference list.

3. Once MGM have nominated you to a host institution, you will receive an email informing you that an application form and a checklist of other documentation required by that institution is available from Melbourne Global Mobility. The completed application must be returned to Melbourne Global Mobility by a specified date with all supporting documentation.

4. Your host institution application will be sent by courier for their consideration.

Final, formal approval of all exchange places is made by the host institution.

If you have been given approval to go on exchange but are yet to be accepted by the host institution at re-enrolment time in October, plan your course at Melbourne for the following year as if you were not going on exchange and choose subjects accordingly. You can change this once you are accepted.

Fascinating and challenging

“Ever since I started my degree I’ve been thinking and talking about spending some time out of the country on exchange. I always had UChile as my first preference, and I was lucky to be accepted almost straight away. I also qualified for a University grant, which paid for my ticket there and back.

After my exchange finished, I travelled through Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. I highly recommend that you make time to travel after your exchange.”Simon LileyBachelor of Science

The University of Chile Santiago, Chile

3. Selection process Selection for exchange is primarily based on academic merit.

Before you go Have you changed your enrolment with your Student Centre to reflect

your exchange? Have you checked that your mailing address is correct? Have you obtained travel/health insurance?

While waiting for your application to be accepted by the partner institution, you should consider your travel options. It may be wise to book a seat for your flight, but make sure you can change the departure date without a financial penalty in case your acceptance documents and visa are not ready in time and you need to delay your departure.

If you’re also thinking of doing some personal travel, go after your exchange rather than before it. You will probably require a student visa to enter your host country and it is often not possible to apply for that visa once you are overseas. Find out what the requirements are for a student visa for your host country. You cannot apply for it until you have been accepted by the partner institution but you can be prepared with all the necessary documents.

C: ACCEPTANCEThe host institution acceptance process varies between institutions but may take up to three months. You can check the status of your application using your student number at:

www.mobility.unimelb.edu.au/outbound/exchange/status

In most cases, partner institutions send your acceptance letter to Melbourne Global Mobility. You will be notified immediately to collect it along with your University of Melbourne acceptance letter. Both are necessary for visa and Youth Allowance purposes. If you cannot collect them, other arrangements must be made by you in advance.

In some cases, acceptance letters and packages are sent directly to you. If this occurs, please provide Melbourne Global Mobility with a copy of the letter as soon as possible.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your enrolment for the period for which you will be away is changed to reflect your exchange status.

D: PRE-DEPARTUREAll exchange students must complete a Melbourne Global Mobility Online Pre-departure Session. You will be notified about completing this session at the end of the semester preceding your exchange. It involves a brief video focusing on questions about topics including:

Being an ambassador for the University of Melbourne Health and safety Transition, adjustment and culture

shock Travel insurance Re-enrolment.

Study abroadStudy abroad allows you to study overseas at an institution with which we don’t have an exchange agreement.

12 mobility.unimelb.edu.au

WHAT IS STUDY ABROAD?Studying abroad is similar to going on exchange except it allows you to count approved study towards your degree at Melbourne from an overseas institution with which the University does not have an exchange agreement. Study abroad can be undertaken at any institution whose subject/s are at an appropriate standard for credit to your University of Melbourne degree.

You do not need to complete a full load of subjects for credit on study abroad – you can do as few subjects as you like, assuming student visa regulations allow it, or as many as you can reasonably study and afford.

TUITION FEESUnlike exchange, study abroad requires you to pay up-front tuition fees to the host institution. The cost varies depending on the destination and the subject load. There are, however, no tuition fees payable to the University of Melbourne for that semester. Your place at the University of Melbourne will be held for you while you are studying overseas.

ELIGIBILITY FOR STUDY ABROAD

Undergraduate studentsTo be eligible to receive credit for studies from study abroad you must: Be enrolled at the University

requirements Be a good ambassador for the

University of Melbourne.

Contact your Student Centre to confirm your eligibility.

Note: AusAID scholarship holders are ineligible for study abroad. Students sponsored by some private organisations may not be funded for study abroad programs and should confirm the conditions of their funding before applying.

Transferring studentsIf you are an undergraduate student who has transferred to the University of Melbourne, you must have: Completed a year or more of tertiary

studies elsewhere Received credit for at least some

of that study towards your current University of Melbourne degree Completed 50 points and a semester

of study at the University of Melbourne.

Double degree studentsDouble degree students may study subjects from both programs while on study abroad. You only need to complete one application form, however both discipline areas must approve your study.

Alternatively, you may choose to study subjects from only one of your degrees. In this case you must have completed at least 50 points in the degree for which you are seeking credit while on study abroad and receive relevant Student Centre approval.

The application process for study abroad is two-fold:

You must apply to your Student Centre for approval to study abroad and to receive credit for that study overseas

You must also apply directly to the host institution to study there.

In parts of North America, the term ‘study abroad’ is usually generic and refers to both exchange and study abroad. In some cases, institutions do not accept fee-paying study abroad students. In Europe, the term used for study abroad is often ‘free mover’, and not all institutions accept these students.

Check the international student sections of institution websites carefully to see what is possible. Where it is not clear, an email and/or telephone call to the institution may be necessary.

A great way to see the world

“While I was in Germany it was quite easy to have a weekend trip to Prague, Berlin or Freiburg – as well as ski weekends when time permitted!

Europe is so small compared to Australia that you only need to drive for five hours and you have already driven through a couple of countries and you’re in a completely different culture.

I went to eighteen different countries during my time studying overseas!”Eric LambersBachelor of Environments

Once accepted Make sure you provide your Student Centre with a copy of your study abroad admission letter so that your enrolment can be changed to reflect that you will be studying overseas.

3Apply to your preferred institution/sApply directly to your preferred institution/s to enrol as a study abroad student. Keep your Student Centre informed of the progress of your application.

Apply to Melbourne Global MobilityOnce you have decided which institution you’d like to attend, submit the Online Mobility Registration and Travel Grant application form via the MGM website to have your proposed overseas study approved:

www.mobility.unimelb.edu.au/outbound/study-abroad/ planning-study-abroad.html

Only submit one application for each period of time you’ll be away. This form is also an application for Melbourne Global funding and must be completed for you to receive credit for your study overseas.

Other options for studying overseas

PLACEMENTS, INTERNSHIPS/EXTERNSHIPS, ELECTIVE STUDIESThese are subjects that form part of a degree, either credit bearing or as a hurdle that must be passed to graduate. You can choose to spend time overseas meeting these requirements in an approved program. For example, you may work in a hospital, on a project in a developing country or as a teacher in a school or a clinical practice, depending on the discipline.

Usually, arrangements are made individually by the student, but they require approval from the subject coordinator. In some cases it may be possible to undertake these studies through an exchange partner before, after or during a formal exchange.

SHORT TERM STUDY ABROAD AND EXCHANGEThere are an increasing number of short term study possibilities offered by overseas institutions during the summer or winter which can be taken through a study abroad or exchange program. For example, the University of Stuttgart Winter School is available to undergraduate and graduate Architecture students and runs from January to February every year. Korea University also has an international summer campus, which can count as part of the exchange.

It’s not always possible to study a summer or winter program at an exchange partner institution as part of the exchange agreement. For example, Law students participating in the Willamette University program in China in June and July, or the University of Sydney CAPLUS program for three weeks in January, must pay up-front fees directly to those institutions, get approval for the course and seek credit when they return. Check with MGM to find out your options.

Find out what is available by checking the websites of institutions that interest you or asking MGM for information about summer program.

ELIGIBILITYEligibility requirements for enrolment in University of Melbourne overseas subjects are listed in the Handbook. They may vary from meeting subject prerequisites to having a minimum academic average or providing a written explanation about why you want to do the subject.

If you want to study overseas on placement or as part of an internship/externship or elective, you must have the approval of the relevant course coordinator. You may need to provide additional information about safety and how that will be assured when you are going to developing countries, remote areas, or into situations considered potentially dangerous.

Note: Study abroad and exchange short term courses must meet the same eligibility criteria as applicants for semester-long study abroad or exchange.

ACCOMMODATION OPTIONSOverseas university accommodation may range from residential colleges to city flats. Under the terms of an exchange agreement, partner institutions are obliged to help you find accommodation. Some overseas universities find it difficult to house all their overseas students before arrival. If this happens you will be notified before your departure and advised what to do and who to contact once you arrive.

Study abroad destinations may offer accommodation as part of your study arrangements, although the cost will be in addition to your tuition fees. In other cases you may need to find your own.

On-campus accommodationApplications for on-campus accommodation are usually made in the following ways: By applying as part of your

application to the host university, or Via the host institution’s website.

Read the host institution’s website and handbooks carefully to identify your options. The host institution will advise when you should complete an application.

Off-campus accommodationMany students choose off-campus accommodation. Most partner institutions have housing offices to assist. In addition, MGM may be able to provide contact details of students currently overseas or recently returned who may be able to advise you where to stay.

The MGM website also provides details of where you can find further advice and assistance in securing accommodation in different countries.

OUR ROLEMGM staff take reasonable steps to ensure you: Receive comprehensive information

about your destination Receive contact person details at

your host institution before your departure Receive help with accommodation at

the host institution before departure or on arrival Are aware of the stability of the host

country Receive information on medical

requirements, including health insurance Are aware that you must have travel

insurance.

This information is provided by MGM and your overseas host institution.

TRAVEL AND HEALTH INSURANCETravel and health insurance are essential for any overseas study. You are responsible for obtaining insurance that will provide medical cover for the duration of your time studying overseas. Free insurance is offered to exchange students through Melbourne Global Mobility. Other students must apply directly to the Insurance Office online, via the address below. You must register for this once you have been accepted by the host institution.

fpg.unimelb.edu.au/io

Some host institutions have a local health insurance scheme in which they would prefer you participate. If you do not wish to do this, you usually need to prove, once you arrive, that you have comparable medical insurance before can enrol. In some cases you may be obliged to purchase the host institution’s local health insurance. If you plan to purchase local insurance, make sure you have travel insurance that covers you for your trip to the host institution, for any travel during the period of study, and on your way back to Melbourne.

unimelb.edu.au/outbound/ health-safety/insurance.html

TRAVEL WARNINGSThe University of Melbourne acts on advice from the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) on the safety of travel to overseas destinations. If the situation in your host country becomes unsafe, and DFAT recommends you ‘Reconsider your need to travel’ or ‘Do not travel’ to your host country, your study period will be suspended until such time as the recommendation improves. If you are in a country where a crisis is developing and a warning is issued, you will be required to leave your study destination and alternative arrangements will be made by the University of Melbourne.

For information about travel warnings to individual countries see:

smartraveller.gov.au

LEGAL ISSUESLaws vary between countries and behaviour that is legal in Australia may be a punishable offence elsewhere (for example, the legal drinking age in the United States is 21 years). Ignorance of local laws is no excuse, and you are responsible for ensuring you observe the law in your host country.

Health and safety Your health and safety while you’re overseas is of utmost importance. Make sure you read this information carefully.

Things to remember Make sure you have suitable health/travel insurance for your time abroad

and for any travel during and after your study Ensure your mailing address is correct and that someone checks your

mail while you are away Note who you should contact at the University of Melbourne if your

study arrangements change to get approval for a new program Get the address of the nearest Australian diplomatic mission (or your

home country’s if you’re not an Australian citizen) in case you need to get help:

Make sure you have copies of all important documents and emergency contact details of your host institution.

Have you thought about the environmental effect of travelling overseas? You can offset the carbon emissions from your flight by subscribing to non-profit organisations such as Greenfleet.

Page 18: MGM Brochure2014

LIVING COSTSYou are responsible for meeting all health insurance, accommodation, living, visa and travel costs associated with studying overseas. We recommend that you allow at least $13,000 for one semester and $19,000 for a year on exchange.

These figures are approximations only – costs vary between countries and institutions.

Check the host institution website and handbook for a guide to the cost of living in that country. Other useful sources of information are country-specific websites about studying overseas, consular/embassy websites and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Students who have previously travelled to the same country are also a great resource, along with the ‘Helpful Links’ on the MGM website.

CENTRELINK PAYMENTSYou may continue to receive benefits from Centrelink while studying overseas provided you are enrolled full time for the semester away and you continue to meet the other eligibility requirements for this funding.

WORKING OVERSEASAlthough part-time work may be possible while you’re overseas, most student visas have restrictions on where you can work and the number of hours you can work while on exchange or study abroad. Investigate the restrictions specific to your destination with your chosen host country’s consulate/embassy. See the ‘Helpful Links’ section on the MGM website for contact details.

SCHOLARSHIP HOLDERSCurrent scholarship holders at the University of Melbourne are usually able to continue their scholarship while on exchange or study abroad. Contact Melbourne Scholarships to confirm this before you finalise your plans.

EXTERNAL FUNDINGAdditional scholarships for exchange and/or study abroad students are offered by some host institutions and international organisations, particularly for countries such as Japan and Germany. Visit the scholarships section of the MGM website for more information:

mobility.unimelb.edu.au/outgoing/funding/other-scholarships.html

TRAVEL FUNDING AVAILABLEThere are a range of grants, bursaries and other funding options available to University of Melbourne students studying overseas. Beginning in 2012, students can only be awarded one amount of funding from the University of Melbourne, however you will be considered for all possible options.

At least 800 Melbourne Global Grants are awarded annually and the University has a number of scholarships and grants for students electing to study at Universitas 21 (U21) partner institutions.

REGISTER YOUR CONTACT DETAILSWhen you arrive at your host institution and have a permanent address, register your address online with DFAT:

smartraveller.gov.au

SUBJECT CHANGESIf you want to make subject changes while overseas, you must get approval from your Student Centre. Email or fax the relevant subject information (see the Study Plan section on page F) as soon as possible to the relevant Student Centre. Exchange students must also send a copy of new subject approvals to MGM.

RE-ENROLMENT FROM OVERSEASIf you intend to return to the University of Melbourne to complete your studies following your exchange, you must re-enrol in September/October. You will then need to complete your enrolment in the new year.

You can re-enrol online or via email. Information is sent to you by the University at the relevant time.

PAYMENT OF FEESFor exchange students or those studying in a University of Melbourne overseas subject, your fees must be paid before the due date. If you fail to pay before the due date, late fees will apply, and subsequent failure to comply may result in the cancellation of your enrolment. If you are having difficulty paying your fees online, contact MGM immediately.

EXTENDING OR REDUCING YOUR EXCHANGEIf you want to alter the period of time that you will be away on exchange, contact MGM as soon as possible.

To extend your time on exchange, your application must be approved by your Student Centre/s, Melbourne Global Mobility, and the host institution.

To reduce your time studying overseas, notify MGM and your host institution. This may have implications for your credit transfer if any subjects are year-long or assessed overseas after you plan to return.

PROBLEMS WHILE OVERSEASIf you are having difficulties with any part of your exchange or study abroad program, first contact the international liaison staff at your host institution. If this is not an option or does not solve the problem, contact the MGM staff immediately as we may be able to mediate on your behalf.

While youre overseas

Get out and explore

“Meeting so many people meant that I always had someone to talk to, something to do and somewhere to be.

My favourite thing to do outside of study was exploring new places with new people. What a city Toronto is! With its hugely diverse suburbs that are characterised by culture – for example, Little Italy and Koreatown – you can’t resist taking the subway and listening to some intimate music gigs and tasting some wonderfully ethnic food.”Serena HuiBachelor of Commerce

When you return As a returning student, your experiences are a valuable asset for other students and staff. By sharing your experiences and suggestions, you can assist future students.

You are invited to share your overseas experience with the University community in the following ways.

berRETURNED STUDENT SURVEY

When you return you will be asked to complete ‘Returned Student Survey’ which provides gives us valuable information about your overseas study experience.

HELPING NEW EXCHANGE AND STUDY ABROAD STUDENTSOne of the best ways of reliving your overseas experience is sharing it with others. Melbourne Global Mobility and your Student Centre are always looking for volunteers to talk about their overseas study experience at information sessions and to promote overseas study to other students. Please let staff know if you are interested in participating.

MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY STUDENT EXCHANGE SOCIETYThe Melbourne University Student Exchange Society (MUSEx) is a student society for students who have returned from exchange and other overseas study and want to share their experiences. MUSEx also provides support for those coming to the University of Melbourne from study abroad and exchange partners.

TRANSCRIPTSFor exchange students, the transcript of the subjects you complete while overseas is usually sent by your host institution to Melbourne Global Mobility. There can be delays in the transcript arriving, so if you are doing your final semester on exchange this may delay your graduation. You will be notified when the transcript has arrived. A copy is sent to your Student Centre where the appropriate credit points are entered on your record.

If you are a study abroad student, you will most likely be sent your transcript directly or will bring it back yourself. As soon as you have your transcript, take it to your Student Centre and ask that the agreed credit be transferred to your degree at the University of Melbourne. Keep the transcript for future reference.

Memories last a lifetime

“Some of the highlights of my time in Geneva were walking up to the top of Mont Salève to view the entire city; sipping on mulled wine at the Christmas markets; studying New Zealand Literature, Reggae and Dupstep in the Caribbean as English subjects; making friends with people from across the world and connecting through our love of the French language; taking the boat across the lake to France for the afternoon, and going to the Lindt Chocolate Factory Christmas Festival, officially opened by Roger Federer.

But don’t listen to my stories, go and make your own. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!”Annick StaindlBachelor of Arts
