The Residences at EastportKnoxville, TN, 2011

55000 s new; 13000 s renovation

This project includes the renovation o the EastportElementary School (ca.1930) and construction o newbuildings to provide 85 one-bedroom apartments orlow-income senior citizens.

The design respects the existing building by using simi-lar massing and organization or the new construction,rather than attempt to stylistically imitate the school.The our new buildings are arranged around securedcourtyards accessible to the residents and their guests.

The arrangement mimics the courtyard establishedby the existing school building, creating secure pointso entry and outdoor spaces that are shared by theapartment occupants. This design allows or a relativelycompact and ecient development ootprint whilemaximizing daylight access or the apartments.

This expansion o the lobby and waiting areas is de-signed to meet the needs o a growing hospital whilecreating a vibrant space intended to appeal to children.

Color and orm are installed in the existing spaces toguide visitors rom the ground oor entry upwards tothe main lobby on the rst oor. Transparent panelscarve space with planes o luminous color.

The design doubles the size o the lobby through theclosure o the little-used atrium adjacent to the lobbyarea. The new design doubles the number o seatsavailable or amilies, provides amenities such as child-riendly restrooms and a cofee bar, and ofers space orpatients to gather or educational events.

Addition o an oce and a gol cartgarage to an existing private resi-dence located between a river and agol course.

The new wing extends out as ar aspermitted, creating an entry court-yard that directs visitors to the rontdoor. The rear patio is thus separatedrom the street, providing greater pri-vacy.

Large windows in the oce providewelcome relie rom the mostly solidacade and allow views outwards tothe river. Staggered punched open-ings in the garage and connectorhallway provide a sense o move-ment.

This materials science research acility is organized

in a 4-story rectilinear bar running rom east to west.This orientation enables the use o sun shading andnatural lighting to be integrated. This orientation alsominimizes the buildings prole as seen rom the resi-dential zone on the ar side o the Tennessee River.

The main entry and quad access is on the rst oor,opening into a multi-level lobby space with access tothe seminar room, conerence room, and second &third oors.

Oce unctions are located around the building pe-rimeter while the building core is made up o labora-tory and support spaces.

Look.Out.House is a two-bed, one-bath home or theman with a plan. Sited in the clifs along the TennesseeRiver, it provides occupants with a scenic view o the

landscape and a perect spot to survey any trouble in theevent o danger. Under the most oreseeable hardshipso the impending zombie apocalypse, the occupantso the home should be able to sustain a airly modernliestyle with very little sacrice.

The roo o Look.Out.House eatures a garden, arainwater collector, and an array o solar panels - enoughto sustain both the home and its inhabitants. From thehouse, the zombie apocalypse will seem like a nothingmore than a Hollywood lm or which one just happensto have luxurious skybox seating.

Look.Out.House is equipped with a drawbridge - asculptural gesture o entry and security in one - whichextends over the innity-edge moat and then draws

up neatly into the concrete entry stair, holding troubleat bay with the simplicity o closure. Nestled into theinterior mass o the concrete entry stair lies a built-inweapons arsenal.

For everyday lie, the home boasts clean and simplelines o built-in storage and a spacious open oor plan.Around the rear o the replace one may nd the entryto the escape stairwell, which leads directly to thesubterranean boat canal. Secured by a steel gate, theboat canal opens into the Tennessee River, which makesits way to the Gul o Mexico and the open seas beyond.

A new prototype or providing economical

modular housing or students. Each 2-storyunit houses up to 6 students and contains 3bedrooms, 2 baths, kitchen, and living room.

The project is a new supermarket and cinema on The Strip inthe Fort Sanders area. Although the area near the University oTennessee campus is highly populated and highly pedestrian,there currently exists no supermarket or movie theater nearby.

From the main street, one can eithe rtake the ramp down-wards to the supermarket level, or up towards the cinema.Outside the building, the ramp continues upwards to a publiclm garden. A rootop miniature gol course is accessibly onthe main building via elevators.

The modern consumer archtetypes o thie project challengeones interaction with ones surroundings through images.Cinema is an escape rom reality through lm, whereas pro-cessed ood consumption is a search or identity throughpackaging. Through the use o images and processes o inter-aciton, the project becomes a machine or the delivery o themodern bread and circus
