Description

Opened in 1939, Bank of Ceylon is the largest bank in Sri Lanka, owning nearly 30% of banking assets in the country. It is backed by the Government of Sri Lanka and provides a wide range of domestic and international financial services.  

People’s Bank is the second largest bank in Sri Lanka and has relationships with more than 25% of households in the country. Its main intent is to provide access to financial services for the rural and poor populations in Sri Lanka. Currently the bank is focusing on modernising, restructuring and improving the efficiency of its operations.  

HNB has been involved in microfinance activities since the latter part of the 1970's and continues to play an aggressive role in this crucial aspect of national development.  

Seylan Bank was incorporated in 1987 with the mission to be the premier provider of financial services beyond customer expectations, maximising mutual prosperity.

Description

The bank was incorporated under the Regional Development Banks Act of 1997 and provides financial assistance for development of agriculture, industry, trade, commerce and other activities in the central region of Sri Lanka.  

The bank carries on the business of the former Regional Rural Development Banks in the North Central Province. The objective of the bank is to provide for the overall economic development of the region within which it operates, with special emphasis on promoting and developing agriculture, industry, trade, commerce and fisheries activities and projects.  

Ruhuna Development Bank was established in 1998 as the first bank to be incorporated under the Regional Development Banks Act of 1997. The bank focuses on employment production & income generation for the people of Ruhuna by developing their entrepreneurial skills through the efficient services of a courteous, ethical & experienced professional staff. The bank services include training & consulting, fund transfer services, leasing, savings & loan products.  

Established in 1999 as a licensed specialized bank under the Regional Development Banks Act of 1997, the bank operates 46 branches across Kegalle, Ratnapura, Kalutara and Colombo. The mission of the bank is to help develop local communities through innovative and sustainable financial solutions,

SANASA Development Bank is a public limited liability company incorporated in 1997. Its mission is to serve as the apex credit institution of the Thrift and Credit Coopererative Societies (TCCS). Its objectives are: strengthening the SANASA Societies to become sustainable rural credit institutions, raising the income level of the poor through sustainable approaches, establishing a development bank equipped with the capacity to provide a range of financial and complimentary services, focusing special attention on facilitating access to financial services and business advisory services for the poor and developing and extending the outreach of rural financial markets.  

Uva Development Bank is a licensed specialized bank established under the Regional Development Banks Act of 1997 for the purpose of providing for the overall economic development of the region with special emphasis on promoting and developing agriculture, industry, trade, commerce and fisheries activities and projects.  

The bank is a licensed specialized bank incorporated in 1999 and operating in the districts of Kurunegala, Puttalam, and Gampaha. Its mission is to create a strong financial institution bonding with satisfied human resources to efficiently and effectively serve its clientele. The bank is involved in skills development, supplying micro credit to low income groups, developing self employment opportunities and many more social and economic development activities.

Description

This is a subsidiary of the Ceylinco Group of companies with the prime objective of uplifting the poorest of the poor in Sri Lanka. The company provides small scale loans to borrowers who do not have any mortgageable assets or guarantors. The company also trains and guides its clients to develop their own small business.  

LOFIN was the first new finance company to be registered with and licensed by the Monetory Board of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka in two decades. It is the only Sri Lankan finance company associated with a global financial giant.

Description

Agbopura TCCS is registered with Central Bank of Sri Lanka and is connected to the Ceylinco Group. This organisation was established in the year 2000 and provides credit facilities, self employment opportunities, insurance facilities and other services to the people of the area. 

This organisation is registered under the Co-operative Department of the Central Province and was established in the year 2000. Its principal activities include facilitating savings and credit and promoting the economic and social development of the people.  

This organisation commenced operations in 1986 and was registered under the Social Services Department in 1991. It operates in most of the villages in the Hambantota District.  

Established in the year 1980, the Matara TCCS is registered under the Co-operative Department. It has 12 branches across the district and mobilizes savings and provides credit to people who are in need of financial assistance. This society is funded by certain government organisations in Sri Lanka. The society is also involved in social service, environmental and training programs.  

WeranketagodaTCCS was established in 1986 and is registered under the Ampara Provincial Council as well as with the Co-operative Department. The society is involved in handling savings of people in the region, providing microcredit and promoting self employment opportunities. The organisation is funded by its shareholders and the Ministry of Finance.

Description

Agro Micro Finance was formed in the year 2002 and is the second specialized NGO-MFI in Sri Lanka after SEEDS.The institution was formed by transfering the microfinance activities and portfolio of Agromart. It provides savings and credit facilities to Agromart clients as well as others. The current operational network is in the districts of Puttalam, Kurunegala, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Moneragala and Ampara.  

Arthacharya Foundation is a national NGO operating in 10 districts of the country. Microfinance is the main activity. A unique feature of the Foundation is that environment conservation is used as an entry point for poverty reduction. The organization is represented on many national and international forums such as the World Bank and ADB consultative committees on poverty and NGO affairs.  

Community Oriented Resource Exchange was started in the year 1982 and is registered with the Social Services Department. The organization is involved in many programmes including health, mocro-credit, etc. The organisation is funded by international agencies such as UNDP and also local authorities such as the Ministry of Finance.

The DRC is a humanitarian umbrella organisation consisting of 30 Danish NGOs. It was established in 1956 for the purpose of helping refugees in Denmark and internationally. In Sri Lanka, the DRC undertakes activities aimed supporting the return and resettlement of internally displaced persons at individual, household an community level. Presently the DRC works in Vavuniya, Mannar, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu and Trincomalee Districts.  

This is a registered organisation of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council and the Social Services Department. Established in 1992, Development Communication Foundation is involved in provision of microcredit mainly for economic, health and nutrition purposes. The organisation is funded by OXFAM which is closely involved in its projects.  

Grameeya Swashakthi Atwela Sanvidanaya was established in 1992 and is registered under the Social Services Department. The organization provides credit facilities to small groups of poor people for their social and economic development. In addition, the organisation provides start up assistance to small businesses and conducts training programmes for entrepreneurs.

Katandola Woman Development Society is registered with the Social Services Department. The society was established in 1996 and its main activities include facilitating credit and savings, social welfare, children’s savings and the welfare of elderly people.  

Lakjaya Thrift and Credit Foundation Ltd is non-bank financial institution established in 2002. Their mission is to provide financial services to the poor and vulnerable people who are financially oppressed. These financial services include loans and leasing facilities. Between 91 and 100% of Lakjayas' operations is microfinance  

This society was formed in 2003 by the shareholders of the Dambadeniya Export Product Development Company for their own social and economic welfare.  

The organization was established in 1993. Its main activities are child wefare development, savings and credit supply, health and rehabilitation of people addicted to drugs.

Paradise Community Development Organisation was established in 1998 and is registered at the Yatiyanthota Provincial Council as well as the Social Services Department. This organisation is engaged in providing credit facilities to low income earners, developeing the education level of children in the region, conducting food programmes and other activities to develop the economic and social levels of the people of the region.  

This organisation was established in 1994 and is involved in providing credit facilities for the very poor population in the region. They also conduct various programmes with a focus on the environment, health & nutrition, drinking water, peace, business development, etc. The Foundation is registered under the Kataragama Provincial Council and the Social Services Department.  

Pragathi Seva Padanama was established in 1994 and is registered with the Social Services Department. Its main activities include pre-school development, children’s societies, facilitating savings accounts and providing credit facilities.  

Praja Shakthi Padanama was established in 1995 and is registered under the Provincial Council as well as the Social Services Department. Its activities include community development, training and microcredit programmes.

This is a non governmental organisation established in 1987 as a federation of local community based organizations with the objective of developing, organizing and stregnthening community institutions, building awareness among the poor about their potential for development, establishing peace initiatives and empowering the poor through sustainable development. It operates in seven districts, mainly in the southern part of Sri Lanka and the district of Vavuniya in the Nothern Province.  

SEEDS has been in exsistance since 1986 as the economic arm of the Sarvodaya Movement. Its goal is to facilitate the eradiction of poverty by promoting the economic empowerment of the rural people and working with them towards creating sustainable livelihoods. They believe that economic empowerment plays a crucial role in poverty eradiction and that ecnomic empowerment means not only increasing income levels but also increasing people’s economic disipline and awareness, as well as building knowledge, abilities and the potential for livelihood improvement.  

Sewalanka Foundation was founded in 1993 as a development NGO with a clear mandate to address the needs of the most vulnerable communities in the most neglected and disadvantaged regions of Sri Lanka. Its mission is to enhance the capacity of rural communities to democratically identify and address their own development needs and to provide services that contribute to the economically viable, socially just and ecologically sustainable development of Sri Lanka. It has a decentralized organisational structure covering the majority of Sri Lanka’s most disadvantaged regions.

The society is involved in savings & credit activities, insurance programmes and various community development programmes. The society was established in 1989 and is registered under the Co-operative Department.  

Sri Rohana Death Relief and Social Services Society was sestablished in 1972 and is registered under the Social Services Department. It is involved in poverty alleviation programmes, savings & credit services, social services and cultural programmes.  

This oraganization is registered under the Central Provincial Council and also with the Social Services Department. It was established in 1996 and is involved in community development, savings & credit services, nutrition & health and other social service programmes.

The TRO is an internationally recognised NGO with offices in all the countries where the majority of the Tamil diaspora have made their homes. The TRO was founded by refugees in South India in 1985 and moved to Sri Lanka in 1987. The organisation is involved in relief, rehabilitation & development activities that span education, health, food security, infrastructure, de-mining and socio-economic recovery and development.  

This organisation conducts credit programmes funded by the NDTF, and also focuses on developing women through training on self employment opportunities, educational programmes for children and various community development activities. The organization is registered under the Social Services Department and covers four provincial councils with a total of 1500 members.

Uva Govijana Kendraya was established in 1991 and covers 09 Grama Niladari Divisions in the Divisional Secretaries Divisions of Ella, Bandarawela and Welimada in the Badulla District. UGK, which commenced its community activities with start up grants from NORAD and SLCDF, is registered as a Voluntary Social Services Organisation with the Divisional Secretary Bandarawela as well as the District Secretary Badulla.  

Wellassa Development Forum is registered under the Social Services Department and was established in 1990. Its principal activities are related to community development and banking. The organization is funded by USAID, CARE, CHA, etc. NDTF provides loans to the organization for onlending to its clients.  

This foundation is owned and managed by rural women in a very rural area in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka. The main products are loans, voluntary savings, training and consulting and also provision of business development services and health and education services.  

The WDF was initiated in the late 1980's as a result of effective mobilisation of women by the government’s lead poverty allevation programme, Samurdhi. The organization is a pure women’s organization with wemen from low income groups comprising the board, management, staff and members. The main products are loans, voluntary savings, insurance and training & consulting. The WDF also provides business development services, health,

People’s Bank is the second largest bank in Sri Lanka and has relationships with more than 25% of households in the country. Its main intent is to provide access to financial services for the rural and poor populations in Sri Lanka. Currently the bank is focusing on modernising, restructuring and improving the efficiency of its operations.  

HNB has been involved in microfinance activities since the latter part of the 1970's and continues to play an aggressive role in this crucial aspect of national development.  

Seylan Bank was incorporated in 1987 with the mission to be the premier provider of financial services beyond customer expectations, maximising mutual prosperity.  

The bank was incorporated under the Regional Development Banks Act of 1997 and provides financial assistance for development of agriculture, industry, trade, commerce and other activities in the central region of Sri Lanka.  

The bank carries on the business of the former Regional Rural Development Banks in the North Central Province. The objective of the bank is to provide for the overall economic development of the region within which it operates, with special emphasis on promoting and developing agriculture, industry, trade, commerce and fisheries activities and projects.

SANASA Development Bank is a public limited liability company incorporated in 1997. Its mission is to serve as the apex credit institution of the Thrift and Credit Coopererative Societies (TCCS). Its objectives are: strengthening the SANASA Societies to become sustainable rural credit institutions, raising the income level of the poor through sustainable approaches, establishing a development bank equipped with the capacity to provide a range of financial and complimentary services, focusing special attention on facilitating access to financial services and business advisory services for the poor and developing and extending the outreach of rural financial markets.  

Uva Development Bank is a licensed specialized bank established under the Regional Development Banks Act of 1997 for the purpose of providing for the overall economic development of the region with special emphasis on promoting and developing agriculture, industry, trade, commerce and fisheries activities and projects.  

The bank is a licensed specialized bank incorporated in 1999 and operating in the districts of Kurunegala, Puttalam, and Gampaha. Its mission is to create a strong financial institution bonding with satisfied human resources to efficiently and effectively serve its clientele. The bank is involved in skills development, supplying micro credit to low income groups, developing self employment opportunities and many more social and economic development activities.  

This is a subsidiary of the Ceylinco Group of companies with the prime objective of uplifting the poorest of the poor in Sri Lanka. The company provides small scale loans to borrowers who do not have any mortgageable assets or guarantors. The company also trains and guides its clients to develop their own small business.  

LOFIN was the first new finance company to be registered with and licensed by the Monetory Board of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka in two decades. It is the only Sri Lankan finance company associated with a global financial giant.  

This is the fastest growing microfinance programme in Sri Lanka. It has the ambitious target of covering all districts of the country. The Samurdhi Movement plays a leading role in alleviating poverty and uplifting the social and economic conditions of a large number of the country's deserving poor. Nearly 2 Mn low income families receive the Samurdhi subsidy. 

Agbopura TCCS is registered with Central Bank of Sri Lanka and is connected to the Ceylinco Group. This organisation was established in the year 2000 and provides credit facilities, self employment opportunities, insurance facilities and other services to the people of the area. 

This organisation is registered under the Co-operative Department of the Central Province and was established in the year 2000. Its principal activities include facilitating savings and credit and promoting the economic and social development of the people.

This organisation commenced operations in 1986 and was registered under the Social Services Department in 1991. It operates in most of the villages in the Hambantota District.  

Established in the year 1980, the Matara TCCS is registered under the Co-operative Department. It has 12 branches across the district and mobilizes savings and provides credit to people who are in need of financial assistance. This society is funded by certain government organisations in Sri Lanka. The society is also involved in social service, environmental and training programs.  

WeranketagodaTCCS was established in 1986 and is registered under the Ampara Provincial Council as well as with the Co-operative Department. The society is involved in handling savings of people in the region, providing microcredit and promoting self employment opportunities. The organisation is funded by its shareholders and the Ministry of Finance.

The National Institute of Business Management (NIBM) was established in 1968 under the purview of the Ministry of Industries. The institute offers a wide range of programs, at Degree, Diploma and Certificate level, in Computer Training, Human Resources Management, Project Management, Financial Management etc.  

Established in 1999, PASS provides research, consultancy and training solutions to the business and development sectors of Sri Lanka. Services offered cover both private and public initiatives in any part of the country and the region and are available in Sinhala, Tamil, and English.  

The training and enterprise services division of SEEDS offers courses in microfinance, microfinance management, CGAP training programs on financial analysis, delinquency management & interest rate setting, MicroSave training modules on market research and product development. Other courses include financial management, human resources management, and leadership development training. Training could be conducted in Sinhala, Tamil or English.  

Enterprise development training has been a core service offering of SLBDC since its inception in 1984. SLBDC is a leading partner organization of both the GTZ CEFE program and the ILO/Start and Improve your Business project. SLBDC’s enterprise development activities are aimed at providing direction and guidance to individuals aspiring to set up or expand micro and small enterprises and also cater to the needs of existing micro and small enterprises. SLBDC also offers Human Resource Development Services and undertakes special consultancy assignments ranging from broad macro level policy studies to more detailed micro level analyses of issues relevant to business and industry.
