    Protection of the environment

Nature and its resources are the basis for ourexistence on earth. We aim to use naturalresources sparingly and in a manner that takesthe requirements of both nature and humanityinto account. We are committed to an integrated approach toenvironmental protection. We address the cau-ses and take into account the effects that pro-duction processes and products have on the

environment when making management deci-sions.You can help the environment by operating yourvehicle in an environmentally responsible man-ner.The operating conditions and your individualdriving style have a great bearing on fuel con-sumption and engine, brake and tire wear. Tohelp reduce fuel consumption and wear, the fol-lowing should be observed:Ravoid driving short distancesRmake sure that the tire pressures are alwayscorrectRavoid frequent and sudden accelerationRdo not carry any unnecessary weight in thevehicleRremove ski racks and roof racks once you nolonger need themRdo not warm up the enginewhen the vehicle isstationaryRchange gear in good time and use each gearonly up toÔ of its maximum engine speedRmonitor the vehicle's fuel consumptionA regularly serviced vehicle will contribute toenvironmental protection. Observe the mainte-nance intervals, which are displayed by the ser-vice interval display, as well as other mainte-nance work that is described in this booklet.

  • Introduction

    Service interval display

General notesYour vehicle is equipped with a service intervaldisplay, which will alert you when it’s time forservice.Under no circumstances should serviceexceed 25,000 km or 12 months. The multifunction display shows a messageapproximately one month before the mainte-nance service is due. It indicates when the nextservice is due in kilometers or days. The symbols or letters on the service intervaldisplay show the type of service that is due.¯ or AA Oil service plus° or BB Maintenance serviceThe sequence of Metris services is A-B. The firstoil service plus (Service A) is followed by themaintenance service (Service B).

Tire rotationThe tires are essential to the total performanceand stability of the vehicle. The service life oftires depends on tire type, speed rating, envi-ronmental conditions, tire load, tire pressure, road surface characteristics and individual driv-ing style. For this reason, we recommend check-ing the tires regularly for wear and the correcttire pressure as well as the proper tire configu-ration, i.e. regularly interchanging the wheels. The tires may only be interchanged on vehicleswith tires of identical sizes on the front and rearaxles. If your vehicle is fitted with tires of the samesize, the wheels of the front and rear axle can beinterchanged in pairs so that the specified direc-tion of rotation is maintained (unidirectionaltires have an arrow on the tire sidewall indicat-ing the direction of rotation).

Wheel rotation diagramFor your convenience this Maintenance Bookletcontains tire rotation confirmation page onwhich you can record the date and kilometreswhen tire rotations were performed(Y page 9).

Severe operating conditionsThe maintenance intervals have been deter-mined so that under normal operating condi-tions the vehicle should operate properlybetween maintenance services. Severe operat-ing conditions may require that the followingparts be replaced at shorter intervals:RINTERIOR FILTERS(Examples: dust filter or activated charcoalfilter) are to be replaced as indicated by themaintenance computer. Under severe dustconditions, or if the climate control is oper-ated frequently in air recirculation mode, thefilters should be replaced more frequentlythan indicated by themaintenance computer.RCOOLANTThe coolant (water/anticorrosion/antifreezemixture) should be replaced at the specifiedmaintenance intervals. The coolant may need to be replaced morefrequently if it is not maintained correctlyand/or anticorrosion/antifreeze productsother than those approved for your vehicle arebeing used. You can find coolant instructionsunder the "Coolant" section of the vehicleOperator's Manual. Contact an authorizedMercedes-Benz Dealer for a list of anticorro-sion/antifreeze products that are approvedfor your vehicle.

    Maintenance

    Booklet

  • Emission System Maintenance

Emission Control System Caution –Gasoline EnginesYour vehicle is equipped with both a three-waycatalyst and a closed loop oxygen sensor sys-tem to comply with current exhaust emissionregulations. Keep your vehicle in proper operat-ing condition by following our recommendedmaintenance instructions as outlined. The following has to be adhered to:a) In all gasoline engine models, use only unlea-ded gasolinewith anOctaneRating of at least 87(as displayed on the pump). Damage to theengine could occur if incorrect fuel is used.Refer to the Operator’s Manual for special pre-cautions.b) Leaded gasoline should not be used underany circumstances. Damage to the emissioncontrol components will result.c) The specified engine maintenance jobs haveto be performed completely and at the requiredintervals. Correct ignition timing and properlyfunctioning spark plugs for instance are impor-tant for the service life of the catalysts. Failure toproperly perform the specified maintenancejobs may adversely affect the emission controlsystem on the vehicle and reduce its service life.d) The operation of the emission control systemmust not be altered in any way. Alterations arenot permissible by law In addition, alterationsmay result in damage to the catalysts, increasedfuel consumption, and impaired engine runningconditions.e) Irregular engine running conditions should becorrected immediately by an authorizedMercedes-Benz Dealer. Such irregular runningconditions can influence the proper function ofthe emission control system. If the check engine indicator lamp in the instru-ment cluster illuminates when the engine is run-ning, it indicates a possible malfunction of theenginemanagement system or emission controlsystem. We recommend that you have the malfunctionchecked as soon as possible.

Description of maintenance work forthe exhaust system

The composition of exhaust emissions is influ-enced not only by the exhaust gas aftertreat-ment system, but also by various engine partsand their settings.Maintenance of the exhaust systemmust there-fore include these engine parts. Some mainte-nance jobs are actually only tests. They areimportant, however, because they allow earlydetection of discrepancies which can later leadto increased exhaust emissions. It is generallyless costly to adjust deviations of this sortimmediately than to wait until they incur highrepair costs. The maintenance intervals havebeen determined so that the vehicle, under nor-mal operating conditions, should operate prop-erly between maintenance services.

Changing the engine oil and filterReplace the engine oil and oil filter according tothe specified maintenance intervals. If oil con-sumption should increase, determine the causeand take necessary corrective steps. Do notreset the service interval display if the oil level istopped up or changed outside the specifiedmaintenance intervals.

Replacing the engine air-filter ele-mentThe engine air-filter element must be replacedaccording to the specified maintenance inter-vals when dust conditions are normal. Undersevere dust conditions the engine air-filter ele-ment should be replacedmore frequently. Cleanengine air-filter cover and housing prior toremoval of engine air-filter element.

Replacing the fuel filterReplace the fuel filter according to the specifiedmaintenance intervals.

Check engine poly-V-belt conditionThe poly-V-belt is subject to wear and aging. Itmust be checked for cracks and wear according

  • to the specified maintenance intervals. Replacepoly-V-belt if necessary.

Replace spark plugsSpark plugs are subject to electrode erosion andmust be replaced according to the specifiedmaintenance intervals, or more frequently asmay be required when subject to severe oper-ating conditions.
