2016 Trinity Term No. 11 Newsletter 01.07

Key Values:

Innovation, Confidence, Aspiration, Respect, Enthusiasm Dear Parents and Children,

This week’s newsletter is huge! It is testament to the hugely exciting curriculum on offer at Hull Collegiate that there is so much go-ing on right until the end of term.

This week’s newsletter includes: ISI Inspection, The Summer Fête, new appointments, Year 5 enrichment, the Rocket Launch, KS1 Sports Day, the KS2 Production, new School Video, Dance Club and staff training.

Inspection

Last week I attended an ISI briefing at Edgbaston with around 150 Headteachers from Independent Schools to discuss the revised ISI inspection framework, which comes into effect from September. It is now six years since Hull Collegiate School has had a full inspec-tion and we are anticipating the arrival of the inspection team in September. We recently received a glowing report from our HMC visit and the school is continuing to go from strength to strength.

The Summer Fête

The Summer Fête was superb. It had a real village fête atmosphere and was very positively received by all of the parents, family, staff and wider community I spoke to. FoHCS worked tirelessly for 8 months in the lead up to the fête and next week have their first meeting to start the ball rolling for next year’s fête. I would like to thank them for their efforts and the British weather for holding off... just! I look forward to announcing the total sum raised in next week’s newsletter.

New appointments

As I informed you in a previous newsletter, sadly Mrs Plewes leaves us at the end of term. She has been an excellent Deputy Head and will be missed by all of the staff. She has been outstanding in her support for me in this first, very busy term and I will miss her creative thinking, ability to multitask and her friendly nature, whilst she juggles all that she has to manage.

As her replacement from September I have chosen to appoint two Assistant Heads to build on the Prep School’s Leadership capaci-ty. I am pleased to announce that Mrs Smith has been appointed as Assistant Head responsible for Teaching and Learning and Mrs Meltham has been appointed as Assistant Head responsible for Assessment. I wish both ladies much success in their roles and a well earnt rest over Summer.

New staff

This week I have asked staff new to the school in September to write a short fact file about themselves to inform you of their careers to date. (An idea from a parent at Parents Forum – Thank you).

Mark Dyson It is with great pleasure to be given this opportunity to briefly introduce myself to you, and to express my enthusiasm for the exciting times that lay ahead. My name is Mark Dyson and I am delighted at having been appointed to the role of Reception Teacher at Hull Collegiate Preparatory School. I am currently the Foundation Lead for Early Years at Welton Primary School, East Riding of Yorkshire and have led various projects across the school. I have had six happy and successful years in a variety of roles, and although I will be sad to leave, I am ready and excited for the challenge ahead. I graduated with Qualified Teacher Status in 2004 from the University of Hull’s PGCE course at the Scarborough School of Educa-tion, where I specialised in Advanced Early Years covering ages 3 to 7. My expertise and passion continues to be with working and inspiring children and adults with the principles of early year’s education. My philosophy is one, which is based around the edict of the ‘best by every child’. I hold a strong child-centred approach to teaching, where consistency, praise, encouragement yet challenge are key. I believe that all children are amazing and have unique potential waiting to be unlocked – it is a privilege, as a teacher and a leader, to be able to inspire, enthuse, motivate and nurture children to fully achieve this and in the process, embrace a love for future lifelong learning. ‘Every child should feel proud, happy and confident learners; knowing that they have been nurtured and encouraged to ignite their own unique spark of genius so that it catches fire and shines.’ I am highly passionate about getting education back to nature and with providing children with opportunities to learn in the great outdoors. Following a period of personal study, I qualified in 2013 with an OCN Level 3 in Forest School Leadership and Management. I am married to my wife Ella, and together we have two lovely boys, Jacob who is 6 and 2 Year old Dylan. Like most boys, they love the adventure, awe and wonder of being outdoors and it was my own personal first-hand experience of Forest School in 2008 and a gift of family membership to the National Trust that has led me down the path to where I find myself today. The National Trust made it their mission to introduce children to their landscapes. With their bucket list of ‘50 Things to do before you’re 11 ¾’, Jacob and Dylan are eagerly working their way through theirs. I consider myself lucky to have experienced quite a diverse career path since graduating as a graphic designer in 1995, freelanc-ing for The Chase in Manchester, before working for Scottish Opera in Glasgow. It was for Scottish Opera where I had the pleas-ure to work with Scottish portrait photographer David Eustace, and the late Storm Thorgerson graphic designer and music video director best known for his work with Pink Floyd, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Muse, Et al. I am passionate about music with quite an eclectic taste, so it was a personal ambition to work with Storm together on the design project for the Opera’s seasonal advertis-ing campaign and is one of my highlights of my graphic design career. I later went on to assist with the initiation of an in-house television and multimedia design studio for Jack Walker, owner of Blackburn Rovers Football Club in Lancashire. Whilst at the football club my influences at the time led me down the path to be-coming a teacher. In March 2013, I was one of five members to initiate a Community First Responder scheme for the Brough and Villages area sup-ported by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS). Having received training from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust we now support our community as volunteers for YAS and share being on-call during evenings and weekends to support their emer-gency calls. I am a keen hill walker and have assisted the Yorkshire Ambulance Service in providing medical support in remote locations around the Yorkshire Dales for the Le Tour De France and subsequently the Tour De Yorkshire cycling events.

So that’s a little bit about myself and my career so far. I am passionate about teaching and believe in the creed that, ‘you teach some by what you say, teach more by what you do, but most of all, you teach most by who you are.’

I look forward to working with you all next September. Have a good holiday!

Sarah Stokes

Hi, I’m Mrs Stokes. I will be joining Hull Collegiate Prep in September - I’m really looking forward to it! I’ve been asked to write a little about myself. Since being primary school age myself, I have always aspired to be a primary school teacher. I have strived through each stage of my education and when my dream was realised in 2003, it was a very proud moment. Being hard working, determined and en-joying a challenge is part of my nature. I feel that sometimes it is important to push yourself to the limit. For example, I am not the most confident person with heights, however a few years ago I abseiled off the Humber Bridge. I have three passions in life, one being teaching, another being France and the last being music. Growing up, especially at primary school age and the begin-ning of secondary school, I was quiet and quite a shy person. However, being involved in music, I truly believe, brought me grad-ually ‘out of my shell’. I began cornet lessons in Year 3 then piano lessons in early secondary school. This enabled me to progress through the brass bands at Albermarle Music Centre. Finally, I attended the Youth Brass Band and I was involved in a tour to Italy. During my secondary school years, I met a wonderfully inspiring music teacher who helped me to see my talents including singing. I then went on to study ‘A’ level music at Wyke Sixth Form College and music for part of my degree in Liverpool. Originally I grew up in Hull. I attended both a primary and secondary school in the east of the city. Then I progressed to Wyke Sixth Form College and after that I attended university in Liverpool. Here I studied BA (Hons) Music and Theology and Religious studies. I also had the exciting opportunity of studying part of my degree in Nice, France. I then came back to Hull to carry out my teacher training through the PGCE at the University of Hull; again for part of my training, I gained an invaluable experience of teaching in Nancy, France. I was excited to achieve my first teaching post in 2003 at Appleton Primary School. I have really loved my time at Appleton, gaining a wealth of experience including taking the role as phase leaders, science coordinator and teaching from EYFS up to Year 6. Now I feel ready for a new challenge and to start a new chapter of my career. I feel honoured to have the chance to enhance each and every child’s education and life experiences. I have high expectations and I always aim to suc-ceed plus more. I have also had experience at the University of Hull teaching on the Teaching and Learning BA (Hons) which will recommence again in September. I currently live in North Lincolnshire with my husband and 2 Year old daughter, Kate. As you can imagine our daughter keeps us very busy indeed. We love playing in our garden on the climbing frame, and planting and growing vegetables. We are a real out-doors-kind-of family which includes going for a walk along the Humber foreshore with our cocker spaniel, Milly, or going on a bike ride and taking a picnic. We also love to holiday in France whenever we can.

I hope that this has given you an insight into my life. I really look forward to working with you all in September. Let ’s reach for the stars!

Amanda Lind

My name is Amanda Lind and I’m delighted to be joining KS1 in September. My career has always been based around children and education from early years through to secondary school.

On leaving college I spent seven years working as a nanny and had some amazing travelling experiences while working. I really enjoyed the role, but when I married my husband David, I found it hard to continue this part of my career due to him being in the military.

I took a career break for a few years to have our two boys Daniel who is now 20 Years old and studying at university and Ben who is 18 Years old and hoping to attend university this September.

It was when the boys started nursery that I was very lucky to be asked by the army welfare services to set up and run a small nursery. This was a great challenge and a challenge that I rose to with great enthusiasm and success. Sadly due to my husband being posted to a new job I had to hand over the nursery and move on.

This was when I embarked on my career in primary schools working within various year groups as a teaching assistant, a job I love. A year before I moved to Lincolnshire I spent a year working with teenagers in a secondary school, giving them extra curric-ulum support.

On moving to our village and our boys settled into school I approached the primary school and offered to be a parent helper. Two months later I was employed in the school and once more I was in the job I loved and developing my skills further.

That brings us to where I am today. After seeing that there was a job at Hull Collegiate, I decided I was ready for a new adven-ture and here I am just a short time away from joining the school. I am extremely excited, even more so after attending the move-up afternoon last Tuesday when I met the children and some of their parents, a very enjoyable afternoon. I had a lovely time at the summer fete on Saturday and seeing the amazing talent of the children. In one word Wow! How can children so young be so talented in so many different ways? The little girl who sang the song from Matilda had such a stage presence, the young Michael Jackson was just mesmerising to watch, to the young man who was the overall winner with his version of Your Half The World Away which brought tears to my eyes. I was so glad that I didn’t have to choose the winner. To see the confi-dence in all the performers was overwhelming.

Have a wonderful summer holiday and I look forward to September and all the exciting experiences that lay ahead.

Year 5 enrichment

This week over 260 children have joined us, over two days, to take part in a Year 5 challenge day. Children from over 35 schools came to experience the life at Hull Collegiate as a pupil, the pace and challenge and variety of activities on offer here. Quotes from the day include; “I just wanted to reiterate what wonderful success today was. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and was totally drawn into the ex-citing and engaging lessons that were happening and I know from observing the children that they did too. It is so rewarding to see a group of children well matched in ability being given the opportunity to be so stretched and challenged. The event was superbly organised and the Year 9 guides were also a credit to the school.” Mrs Escreet, School Governor.

“I enjoyed Maths because at our school we don’t get to do anything like this”, “great teachers and students who showed me around”, “DT because we don’t have these resources at our school”, “the art in here is amazing”, “it was a perfect day” and “I really love this school”…

“I couldn’t improve the wonderful day I had”, “we don’t get to do things like this at our school”, “lunch was the best meal ever”, “would love to spend more time here”, “I was amazed”, “absolutely amazing”. (Many staff and parents stayed to accompany their children across the two days and the feedback was overwhelming).

On Thursday I had 4 ‘WOW’ moments:

Fire in a child’s hands – the awe and wonder in Science was astounding.

The rocket launch on the field – 300 metres into the air at a speed of 180mph, which dropped every-one’s jaws and led to huge gasps from both chil-dren and parents. Copy the link below to watch the video.

http://www.hullcollegiateschool.co.uk/gallery/year-5-gifted-and-talented-day-june-2016-5229894315297720

The KS1 sports day – the determination of all of the children in their races and huge smiles as they crossed the line. (Just one blooper from me on that day).

The KS2 production. Wednesday night was very good, Thursday was OUTSTANDING – clear diction, comic timing, excellent acting and choral singing. After a tiring week for everyone, laughter like that was very well received.

These comments were received from Mr Dyson: “Congratulations to everyone involved in the performance. Everything about the show shouted quality. It was lovely to see children that I had taught in reception having the confidence and determination to stand on that stage and captivate the audience in the way they did tonight. So lovely to see familiar faces albeit a metre taller. I had many belly ache of laughs thanks to so many of the young stars, but I’m sure many would agree with me when I say that one pupil had most definitely made the part his own. Joseph Armah as Admiral Horatio Hornmaker stole the show, literally with his one liners, facial expressions and general demeanour. He pulled off the part giving it true personality as he left the audience reeling with laughter, eating from his hands for more – a star in the making! I had an hour of light hearted fun tonight and a lovely return to Collegiate – Thank you”.

School Video

This week we have had a company in school over two days to film for a school video. First cuts should be in over the Summer and we are excited to reflect on the finished product. We had a hugely packed timetable over the two days and the camera men were so impressed with the wide variety of activities on offer inside and outside the classroom, the manners and confidence of the children and positive and welcoming reception they had from all staff.

Dance Performance

The children had so much energy at their dance performance on Wednesday lunchtime. Thank you to Miss Katie and to Miss April who will run the Dance Club whilst Katie is on maternity leave.

Training Day

Today we welcome staff from a number of United Learning Schools to Hull Collegiate for a training day on ‘Mastery in English’ and the ‘Outstanding teaching of Grammar’. We are always striving for excellence in all that we do and staff are looking forward to a full day of CPD and hands on learning.

Thank you for all of your support with events this week and I hope to see many of you next week at Sports Day and at Prize Giving when I will reflect on my first term in post.

Foundation Stage News

This week in the Nursery we have been very busy completing final assessments with each child in preparation for their end of

year reports, which you will be receiving next week. It is very gratifying to see the way that the children have developed over the

past year, and we are particularly pleased with the large number of Adventurers who are confidently recognising most of their

single phonic sounds and beginning to blend them in order to read simple words. Discussions about ways to research information

using books and computers have also demonstrated some excellent reasoning skills as well as clear retention of information and

positive attitudes towards learning.

Our Reception classes have been busy taking part in mathematical memory games and consolidating their understanding of ordi-

nal numbers and sequences. They have also been thinking hard about simple data analysis.

Just a reminder: Please make sure that you have returned any school library or reading books to us by the end of next week.

Thank you.

All chil-dren in KS2 are allowed to come to school in their PE kit on this day. Please remember to provide them all with wa-ter and a house cap to (hopefully) keep the sun off. I hope you can make it…Come on Johnson!

Year 3 Camping

When I went camping it was so much fun. We put up the tents at the start. It was a bit tricky but then you got in to the tent and it was wonderful. It was like a real den. We did lots of activities

that helped us to work as a team. The activity called Electric Fence was ex-citing and we also had to use planks to get across a dangerous river (it was only pretend!) We played games too and I liked Sheep and Shepherds the best. Before we went to bed we had hot chocolate and hot dogs – yummy! I liked snuggling up in my sleeping bag and talking to my friends. We secretly ate biscuits in bed. Beware, you don’t have much sleep when you go camping be-cause it is too exciting and the birds wake you up early. Ruby Johnson, 3SW
