PREP TRACK AND FIELD "OLYMPICS" PROMISES NEW NATIONAL RECORDS
By EDDIE LOPEZ
Bakersfield's crushed brick Memorial Stadium running strip will be the site for the nation's premiere schoolboy athletic event -the 47th annual California Interscholastic Federation Track and Field Championships.
As past records will substantiate, it is the Olympic Games of the spiked shoe set.
More national interscholastic records have been established in the all-California classic than in any other schoolboy meet in the nation and this year's edition in the spacious 19,467 seating capacity arena can be expected to fulfill that promise. · A talented field of more than 300 runners, jumpers and throwers from the Oregon to Baja California borders, representing nine CIF sections, will open the competition Friday at 6:15 p.m. with trials in all events with the exception of the two-mile runa newly introduced event this year-and the discus. Saturday's program of finals will start with the discus at 4 p.m.
Leading this year's vanguard of the finest collection of prep performers in California history are two national interscholastic record holders, 16-63/4 pole vaulter Paul Wilson of Warren High in Downey and 25-43/4 junior long jumper Johnny Johnson of Pacific Grove.
Wilson became prepdom's first 16 footer last season as a junior. Since then, teammate Bob Steinhoff has cleared 16-1.
Miler Mike Ryan of Wilcox High, 4:10.4, and Wilson are the returning defending champions. They will be joined by four national leaders: Muir sprinter Harold Busby, 9.5 and 20.5; Overfelt High quarter miler Lee Evans, 46.9 ; Berkeley High two miler Ralph Gamez, 9:11.5, and Palisades High shot putter Steve Marcus, 63-9.
Busby, who has umpteen 9.5's to his credit this season, is favored to become a double gold medalist but look out for Fermin Lasuen High's 9.5 swiftie, Rich Jenkins, who upset Busby in the Mt. San Antonio Relays; Castlemont's Jerry Bright, winner of the West Coast Relays century in 9.6, and Edison's Sam Davis, another 9.6 flyer. Busby was fifth in both sprints in last year's state meet.
Bakersfield High's 1964 state half mile runnerup, Clark Mitchell, is credited with the nation's third fastest clocking, 1 :52.0, and unless something completely unexpected occursremember Edison quarter miler Ezunial Burts' stress fracture last year?- he is a shoo-in.
Also looking to improve on a fourth in last year's state low hurdles is Grant High's Curtis Clark, whi le Lemoore High's Ernie Smith looks to do better than last year's fifth in the low sticks.
Evans, who also has whizzed the furlong in 20.9, easily should improve on last year's fourth spot in the 440.
Three other entrants rate No. 2 in the nation in their specialties: Edison discus thrower Havis Nelson, 180-3¼; Chula Vista junior miler Tim Danielson , 4:08.7, and Notre Dame high jumper Larry Fischer, 6-9.
In addition to Busby going after the 9.4 and 20.4 national marks, Castlemont's Bright anchored 880-yard relay team, No. 2 in the nation at 1 :26.8, is capable of going under the 1 :25.9 national standard. Wilson and Johnson, of course, could improve on their national marks. Evans and Mitchell figure to come close to the 46.1 and 1 :50.9 national records. A good day by Fischer could wipe out the 6-9% high jump standard.
Added spectator appeal will be provided by exhibitions in the 1,320-yard run, mile relay, class B and C 440-yard relays during Saturday's finals.
Bakersfield last hosted the fi tate meet in 1959-the year Poly triumphed. Will hi,,.tory repeat for the J ackrabbits?
Johnny Johnson, Pacific Grove, National high school record holder in long jump at 25' 4¾".
