welcome to the workshopWhether you are reading this in the August heat, or while reflecting on the vivid colors of

October or the icy white expanses of February, we welcome you to use this brochure as a

springboard into creativity. The Creative Workshop is the art school division of the Memorial

Art Gallery’s education department; we’ve been around for well over 80 years and—because

we are a community of artists—we still innovate, experiment and create!

This brochure—covering classes for all ages in our fall session (September to December) and our

winter session (January to March) — contains classes which have run successfully for years as

well as some very new ideas. We’ve got everything from quick classes in jewelry to courses

where traditional oil painting is taught to beginners.

If we had to share some little piece of truth with everyone walking into the Workshop it would

be that “yes, you can learn to draw, to paint, to sculpt, to make a beautiful piece of jewelry.” We

know that a simple recipe of good instruction, motivation, friendly camaraderie and dedicated time to create can result in amazing works of art and

craft. What’s more, we hear a lot of laughter from our classrooms.

We strongly encourage you to call us if you have questions after looking over the options. Or better yet, stop in when we have an Open House (see

page 7) or anytime really. We’d love to meet you and help you get more creative.

With our best wishes,

Rachael Baldanza Peggy LaHair-Edmunds

Our classes teach the technical skills of drawing, painting, ceramics and jewelry making while encouraging kids to recognize their natural talents and creative strengths. We rarely tell kids what to draw, but rather help them figure out how to draw what they want.

Our teachers continually challenge kids to try new materi-als and ideas while enjoying the freedom of creation. Most classes go into the Gallery at least once a session, to draw,

look and discuss art. They leave inspired, excited and with a greater understanding of the cultures and histories that influence us all.

Classes are listed by age grouping and subject matter. To accommodate children’s busy lives our classes are sched-uled at a variety of times. Call us at 585-276-8959 and we can help you find the right class for your child.

What impact might your child’s art class have?“I was turned on by the smell of paints and floor wax in the museum. I always drew and they dropped the art department at Sodus; they allowed me to take Friday afternoons off and it was the high point of the week to come in here [MAG], look through the collections and get up to my elbows in paint. I had a won-derful art teacher—Rebecca Cook.”

Pulitzer Prize winning poet John Ashbery (from his lecture at MAG on June 2, 2011)

“My mother took my life inquiries very seriously, putting aside time to confab with me. She would look me straight in the eyes as we tried ardently to figure something out. She respected and supported my ideas. When I announced my desire to become an artist, she drove me to the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery every week so that I could study drawing and painting. She did this consistently from the time I was eight to thirteen.”

New! We find that connecting art and global culture is a wonderful way to bring the world to your child! The indi-vidual sessions in this program are based on such celebra-tions as the Moon Festival in China (September), the Festival of Lights (Dewali or Divali) in India (October), and the traditions of the ndebele peope of Zimbabwe and South Africa (november).

We will explore traditions such as the matryoshka dolls of Eastern Europe (December), Lunar new Year throughout Asia (January), molas of the Kuna people of Panama (February) and Islamic tiles of the past Persian Empire (contemporary Iran and Iraq) (March).

Each program involves a hands-on art project, a factsheet with more information—including books available in our art library—and a chance to see a related artwork in the Gallery. We encourage kids to sign up for the whole series. This program continues in the spring (April, May and June). Watch for information in our spring/summer bro-chure, which publishes in mid-February 2012.

Think beyond the box—this is a class for tweens and teens who want to learn the same techniques used to make “real” action figures. You’ll leave with your own 3-D figure model with accessories, after you’ve learned the process. Begin with sketches and concept illustrations (the same steps used in comic book and movie production); develop a set of characters, story and settings; and then choose one that will be your character. You’ll fabricate a model (using armature and plaster gauze) inspired by visits to sculpture in the Gallery. Perfect for students interested in Manga, science fiction or fashion, or curious about illustration or sculpture.

Art schools look carefully and critically for students with portfolios that demonstrate skill, talent, ambition, creativity and persistence—factors that often determine whether students will succeed in school and in their chosen creative careers.

These short classes allow motivated young artists a chance to create ambitious, portfolio-worthy art projects (drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture) inspired by both the Gallery’s permanent collection and major exhi-bitions on view. You’ll learn to evaluate your artwork objectively and create new pieces that can “fill the gaps.” The instructor will offer inspiration, information and motivation as you continue to grow into the artist you are meant to be. Students will be given tips and tech-niques to help them identify their future paths as artists (whether they choose to train professionally or simply continue to create on their own).

The fall class will help prepare students to attend the national Portfolio Day event on Sunday, november 6 at RIT. The winter class can help students respond to any feedback they might have received at this or any other portfolio review. This is a rare Creative Workshop class with (fun) homework!

Fee for 32634: $132 (members $119)Fee for 32635: $113 (members $102)

drawing drawing is a core art skill that anyone can learn. drawing realistically or in an abstract manner is easier and more satisfying after you develop skills in rendering, measuring, and shading to create form. Learning to draw or draw better is also about learning to see, learning a new language, and finding your way around the best tools and techniques used by artists for centuries.

If you’re just starting, we recommend that you begin with one of the short classes listed below or Beginning Drawing.

JewelryLearn to make your own jewelry! Learning to use fine saws for metal and other specialized equipment can take time, but students who take jewelry classes tell us that they were amazed they could learn to set a stone, or make an enam-eled pendant, all while laughing and meeting new friends.

Our instructors are professional jewelers and teachers who understand the creative and practical concerns that go into every piece of hand-made jewelry.

To sample what is possible, try one of our One Shot Jewelry series (below). Often, though, students tell us that one class is not enough! The best full class to start with is Beginning Jewelry (if you have little or no experience) or Jewelry Project (essentially a shortened version of Beginning Jewelry in which fewer projects are created). If you have some experi-ence, start with Jewelry Workshop or Open Studio.

Short classes in specialized techniques (such as soldering) can help you add techniques to your “toolbox” and allow you to make the magical things you want to make.

QUICK JEWELRY SERIESTopics and dates below

Short courses! Each of these very short (one- or two-session) jewelry courses is perfect for an absolute beginner. While making a silver ring, you’ll use fine metals and learn jewelers’ techniques such as soldering fine silver and manipulating wire. As you make an enamel pendant, you’ll use colored glass fused to copper. Simple casting introduces an easy way to make cast metal pieces of your own design. We carefully limit material costs, and all materials can be purchased in the Workshop office directly next to the studio. Class sizes are limited.

Fee for single-session classes: $45 (members $41)Fee for two-session classes: $65 (members $59)

facultyThis list includes primarily instructors teaching with us this fall and winter. The Workshop reserves the right to make teacher changes as needed. The snippets below are limited to a sentence or two because of space.

We welcome several new instructors this year. among them Kurt Moyer, Maria Hoover and Suzanne Kolodziej.

We also wish Marilyn Feinberg, Faruk Kaiyum, and Cori O’Connell well in their moves across the country (we asked, but the commutes from Florida, Atlanta and Montana, respectively, were just too great).

It’s not unusual for instructors to take a session or two off. Look for some “dormant” teachers to reappear in the spring, or as occasional substitute teachers.
