Want to get involved with helping animals but aren’t sure where to start? The Flagler
Humane Society holds volunteer orientation twice a month for new volunteers. Call
FHS for dates and times. We’ll be holding a special orientation July 12 at 11am for
those who would like to help with our adoption outreach program. Outreach involves
bringing adoptable pets to various locations to be shown for adoption. We hold onsite
adoptions and it helps the animals to be in the public and seen. Email
[email protected] if you’re interested in attending or for more
information.
Donation Opportunity: FHS is still collecting gently used shoes until the end of
July. We receive a monetary donation for each pair of shoes collected. The shoes are
then sent to developing countries to be repurposed by individuals that can then start,
maintain and grow a business. Shoes can be dropped off at the shelter or at local
businesses. A list of drop off locations is available at
http://www.flaglerhumanesociety.org/soles-souls-shoe-drive/.
Adoption Specials: We are currently offering an “Over 3 is Free” adoption
campaign. We are extending it through the summer months. All cats over 3 years old
age have their adoption fees waived.
Upcoming Events: Our July Yappy Hour will be hosted by Break-Awayz in Flagler
Beach on A1A. It will be held on Tuesday, July 29 from 6 – 8 pm. There will be food,
fun and lots of great times! Don’t forget to pick up your tickets at Break-Awayz, at
the shelter or online.
Save the Date for the Fast & Furriest 2014 Run and Walk to help the animals. This
year’s event will be held on September 27, 2014, at Princess Place Preserve. For
details and to register visit www.flaglerhumanesociety.org/fast.
Upcoming Outreach Events: FHS will have a booth in Flagler Beach for the 4th
of
July festivities. We will have a booth inside Veteran’s Park with informational
handouts and retail items. We will also have a booth with adoptable pets at the
Gallery of Local Artists on South 2nd
Street on the 4th
and we will be where the
Farmer’s Market is usually held on the 5th
. We will have adoptable pets from 1 – 5pm.
Times are subject to change at a moment’s notice due to weather - we try to bring the
animals out during the coolest parts of the day.
FHS representatives will be out front of the Palm Coast Walmart on July 26-27 with
adoptable pets. We will be collecting monetary and food donations.
Public Announcements: The Flagler Humane Society has a variety of subsidized or
FREE spay and neuter programs for members of the community that need to have
their pets or community pets sterilized. Please call FHS at 386-445-1814, email
[email protected] or [email protected] for questions.

Animals ready for homes
Remember Healy? This lovely little tortoiseshell cat, who grew up in
the Shelter since arriving in March, finally found
her forever home when she was adopted the week
following her being the Featured Pet. We love
happy endings!

GINGER Ginger is a swell old gal that is a
mature 8 years old. She is
already spayed and up to date on
her vaccinations. She is super
sweet and laid back. She enjoys
the company of people and other
pets. She had to be surrendered
due to the health and age of her
owner. This is a sad situation for
this senior girl and she would
love to have a home to live out
the rest of her years. She enjoys
lots of petting and belly rubs.
She will roll right over and be
your friend forever! Come see
this senior gem today!

City of Palm Coast announces changes to July 3 fireworks launch location Palm Coast – The location of the City of Palm Coast’s July 3 fireworks celebration is moving back to the traditional fireworks launch area just northeast of Central Park. The Fireworks in the Park display will begin at 9 p.m. this Thursday, July 3. The best viewing area will be at Central Park, 975 Central Avenue, and along Central Avenue near the park. Central Park can be accessed via Central Avenue – from Belle Terre Parkway or Town Center Boulevard (off SR100). It is important to note that there will be no entrance to the fireworks event from Bulldog Drive, due to ongoing road construction. Parking and viewing will not be available at Flagler Palm Coast High School as previously announced. The City had previously planned to move the fireworks launch location to Bulldog Drive this year, but that was changed Tuesday due to concerns about the proximity to the Flagler Airport. Pre-fireworks family fun will be provided by the Flagler Education Foundation from 5 to 9 p.m. at Central Park. The evening will include live entertainment, family fun and games, free prizes, music, dancing and a cookout. Beach 92.7FM and Kix Country 98.7FM will provide music and entertainment. Frozen T-shirt contests, whipped cream battles and other games will take place on the Central Park stage. There is no charge for entry, parking or participation. While food and drinks will be available for purchase, coolers and pop-up tents are allowed. The Fireworks in the Park celebration is produced by the City of Palm Coast, Flagler Education Foundation, and Beach 92.7, with the fireworks funded by a grant from the Flagler Tourist Development Council. Proceeds from the pre-fireworks event will benefit Flagler School programs and scholarships. A spectacular fireworks show will begin at 9 p.m., coordinated with patriotic music broadcast on Beach 92.7. While most people will gather at Central Park, thousands of others can see the fireworks from area parking lots and backyards. Tuning in at 9 p.m., everybody can enjoy the show from miles around. For more information about Fireworks in the Park, contact Palm Coast Parks & Recreation at 386-986-2323.

Palm Coast celebrates ‘Sen. Thrasher and Rep. Hutson Appreciation Day’ Palm Coast – Florida Sen. John Thrasher and Florida Rep. Travis Hutson attended Tuesday’s Palm Coast City Council meeting to personally receive recognition on “Senator Thrasher and Representative Hutson Appreciation Day in Palm Coast.” Thrasher and Hutson were thanked for their support of Palm Coast at the state level – and for always making time for the community’s residents despite their busy schedules. “Every time we’ve gone to Tallahassee, every time we’ve made a phone call, they’ve made time for us and they’ve listened. And in most cases they’ve been extraordinarily supportive,” said Mayor Jon Netts. “So thank you on behalf of the City of palm Coast.” Thrasher and Hutson were instrumental in securing funding for the upcoming Palm Coast Water Treatment Plant 3 Concentrate Treatment Project for Iron and Color Reduction. The project will recover and treat 750,000 gallons on an average annual day, water that previously would have been discarded, and will result in fewer required wells in the future, reducing the burden on the water supply and on Palm Coast Utility rate-payers. The project will allow Water Treatment Plant 3 to operate at 100-percent recovery, making it environmentally friendly and one of the most efficient Nano-filtration plants in the world. The senator and representative were also lauded for assisting with other legislative priorities during the 2014 Florida Legislative Session, including acceleration of transportation priorities in the Palm Coast Northeast Corridor and increasing local control over vacation rental regulations. “This is a big honor. I really appreciate this,” Hutson said. “(This was) my first year up there and, with the senator’s great help, I’m happy to be able to do something for our district and to bring something back home.” Added Thrasher: “Travis and I both have enjoyed representing Flagler County. We look forward to working for you and doing other things for you as the next session comes about. The economy is improving – that’s the good news, and so if there are some other things out there
that we can help with as the session approaches, I hope you’ll let us know. We dearly appreciate this – it’s an honor to be here.”

News Release July 3, 2014 National women’s rugby championship to be held in Palm Coast and the Flagler Beaches Palm Coast – The American Collegiate Rugby Association has selected Palm Coast and the Flagler Beaches as the site of its national championship tournament for women’s rugby, to be held Dec. 6 and 7 at Indian Trails Sports Complex. “This is Palm Coast’s first collegiate tournament and our first national championship, and we’re honored to host this prestigious event,” said Luanne Santangelo, Director of Parks & Recreation for the City of Palm Coast. “We’re looking forward to showcasing our community and all it has to offer to women’s rugby players across the United States, along with their coaches and families.” “This is going to be a high-level tournament that will lead many others to us,” added Flagler County Chamber of Commerce Vice President of Tourism Development Matthew Dunn. “We are anticipating an even greater economic impact than we typically see with sports tournaments because these teams will be traveling from a great distance and they’ve already indicated they plan to arrive early to enjoy the beach and our other amenities.” The American Collegiate Rugby Association includes more than 150 colleges, representing the largest group of rugby teams in the country, said Jeff Ward, Executive Director of ACRA. The women’s national championship was held in Lake Myrtle, Florida, last year, and when ACRA started scouting locations this year, Palm Coast was recommended by a coach at the University of Florida. Attracting sports tournaments is a key goal of the City of Palm Coast’s Prosperity 2021 strategic economic development plan, and the community has enjoyed great success in recent years, especially in soccer and lacrosse. Palm Coast prides itself on the high quality and condition of the fields at the Indian Trails Sports Complex. Construction will begin this month on two new fields, which will bring the number of fields to 10 – just in time for the national women’s rugby championship in December. The ACRA tournament will be played in two divisions over two days, with regional qualifying tournaments held around the United States in mid-November. Last year’s champions were Norwich University (Vermont) in Division I and Winona State University (Minnesota) in Division 2. Other teams included the U.S. Military Academy at Westpoint (New York), the Naval Academy (Maryland), the University of Northern Iowa, Notre Dame College (Ohio), Vassar College (New York) and Kutztown University (Pennsylvania). “It’s truly national in its scope – as far west as Utah,” Ward said.
Rugby will be added to the Olympic Games in 2016, for the first time in many decades, and it’s growing in popularity on college campuses and among spectators. “We’d like to encourage the public to come out and watch the games,” Ward said. “It’s really great rugby. It’s the only sport for women that not only allows contact, but encourages it. It’s very athletic and fun to watch. Sports fans will truly love it.” For more information, contact Cindi Lane, Palm Coast communications & marketing manager, at 386-986-3708.
