Flag Policy

.. _AmeIj~'m.JJgg~ pu.n::h.'lsE;t<LbY-JhE;tu.s. military must be completely madein America.

It's the sort of thing that seems likeit would have been formalized already. There's a rule that governs what thePentagon can purchase and wherethese things must originate, a rule thatwasn't used to cover American flags.

The new policy says that Americanflags, "including the materials andcomponents thereof," have to be madein the United States.

Mavis Batey dies at 92Renowned code-breaker for Britain in

WWII

Fifty miles north of London liesBletchley Park, a railway town duringWorld War II that had few, if any, sights to recommend it. It was here, toa rundown estate on the other side ofthe tracks, that 19-year-old MavisBatey was dispatched in the spring of1940.

As Hitler's forces advanced acrossEurope, encoded messages fromPanzer divisions, U-boats and even theGerman high command were beingintercepted and relayed to the men andwomen at Bletchley Park, whose jobwas to break the German code andhelp Britain and its allies outwit theAxis powers.

Batey, a college student studyingGerman linguistics, became one ofBletchley Park's nimblest decoders. She decrypted a message that led to astunning British victory over the Italiannavy in the Mediterranean. She alsowas the first to crack the secretmessages of the Abwehr, the Germanintelligence service, a breakthroughthat helped ensure the success of theD-day landings.

"She was the last of the greatbreak-in experts ... who broke codes orciphers that no one else had everbroken," said British historian MichaelSmith, who wrote several books onBletchley Park. "She was a remarkablewoman and someone I will neverforget, nor will anyone who ever met

her·"

Batey, who earned distinction as agarden historian before her World WarII exploits were publicly recognized, died of natural causes Nov. 12 at herhome in the West Sussex village ofPetworth, said Katherine Lynch of theBletchley Park Trust. She was 92.

Though it resembled a typewriter, with 26 alphabetic keys, it was farmore complex, with three or fourelectrically wired rotors capable ofproducing endless combinations ofcoded letters. To make decipheringeven more of a challenge, there were anumber of different models, each withits own confounding way of changingthe input and output, so that, forexample, MMMMM might come outQVCTW one day and a differentnonsensical jumble the next day.

According to Batey, one newdecoder fled Bletchley after hearing adetailed description of the Enigma'sconvoluted innards.

One day she was examining amessage sent on the Italian navy'sEnigma and noticed that there was notone L in it. Knowing that the machinenever encoded a letter as itself, shesuspected that she was looking at atest message a lazy operator hadmade by repeatedly pressing the L key. With this discovery, "Mavis broke themain Italian naval Enigma," Smith toldThe Times last week, "andreconstructed its inner workings on thebasis of one single message."

In March 1941 she decoded a farmore important dispatch. The Italiannavy had transmitted a message thatsaid "Today's the day minus three,"signaling a major attack in three days. The next intercepted messagesupplied details of the battle plan, including the number of Italianwarships and the time and location ofthe assault.

"Why they had to say that I can'timagine," Batey said of the firstdramatic message when she wasinterviewed by Smith decades later. "Itseems rather daft, but they did."

The information allowed the RoyalNavy to hand Italy its worst defeat atsea: In the Battle of Cape Matapan, offthe Greek coast, more than 2,000Italian sailors died and five Italian shipswere destroyed.

Batey's most noteworthycontribution came in late 1941, when

she worked with Knox and anothercolleague, Margaret Rock, to break theultra-complex Enigma machine usedby the Abwehr. Batey decoded amessage between Berlin andBelgrade, the capital of modern-daySerbia, that allowed her team tounderstand the machine's encryptionprocess. Days later, she broke thecode of a second Abwehr machine.

These breakthroughs were crucialto the success of the Double CrossSystem, a British operation that usedcaptured German spies to feed falseinformation back to Germany. With theinvaluable aid provided by BletchleyPark, Britain was able to confirm thesuccess of its massive deception.

The- phony intelligence -includedmisleading reports about .where themain Allied invasion force would land, pointing at the Pas de Calais ratherthan Normandy. Hitler subsequentlyfortified his forces on the Pas deCalais, dooming his chances ofrepelling the historic D-day assault onJune 6, 1944. President Eisenhowerlater said that the secrets unspooled atBletchley Park shortened the war bytwo years.

"There is nothing like seeing a codebroken, that is really the absolute

tops," Batey told Smith in his 1998book "Station X: The Code Breakers ofBletchley Park,"

The Navy Lakehurst Historical Society would like to offer our members and the general public, theopportunity to memorialize a loved ones service to our county with a permanent brass nameplate. Theseplates will be mounted on the wall of the museum, midway between the floor and the ceiling. Eachnameplate will be seen by visitors who come to the museum each year. It is a wonderful, yet inexpensiveway, to insure your family member will be remembered in a setting befitting their service to our state andto the nation.

The donation cost of each brass plate is only $50.00. Even this minimal cost is offset by the fact themuseum is a 50l-C(3) non-profit, enabling you to deduct the full cost when you file your income taxes.

Your donation serves two purposes. First, and most important, it serves to memorialize a family memberwho served this country in peacetime or in war. It also allows the museum to continue to grow andexpand, insuring tomorrow's youth learn what the price of freedom is and WHO paid it.
