Melbourne Fashion

Most people wouldn't ‘have known it but Melbournians are really into their fashion. We love the latest styles and start heaps of fashion trends. No wonder there is fashion designers popping up here and there with their little boutiques in the city and stretching out into the outer suburbs.

Melbourne Fashion History

• The first iconic thing that happened in Melbourne fashion history is the fashion on the fields at the Melbourne cup.

• In 1862 the VRC (Victoria racing club) set up a competition at the Melbourne Cup called fashions on the fields. It was a competition where the women that attended the races were judged on their fashion, the person who was best dressed won £7000. All this was only set up to persuade more women to attend the races.

• The competition became very popular fast and as more women attended more categories were introduced. The prize money for the winners started to increase.

Melbourne Cup• By the early 80s the VRC

needed to get sponsors to help pay for the prize money, that is where Myer came in.

• By this point every celebrity and fashionista would attend this event because of its popularity.

• For something that was started not expecting to become so popular is now an annual highly anticipated event and is part of Melbourne history.

Melbourne Fashion Week

• L'Oreal's Melbourne Fashion Festival (LMFF) is a fashion festival showcasing all of the latest fashions, talent and latest designs by the best designers & labels. It is also a highly anticipated event in Melbourne and attracts everyone and anyone who loves fashion.

Project Runway Australia

• Melbourne is so famous for its fashion that the T.V series project runway filmed 2 seasons of the show right here in Melbourne. The show was shot at the Whitehouse institute of design.

One of the challenges on the

competition was to design a dress. They got Kelley Rowland in as a special guest

to judge. The designer that won, Kelley would wear their design for her concert. The winner

of the activity Patrova (above in red) later on went and won the final!

No matter where you are, there are fashion houses and boutiques all over the joint in Melbourne and you will never run short of shopping centres famous for all their fashion. There is no doubt that Melbourne is the most fashionable place in Australia and I am so happy I live here because of it.
