THE WORLD’S LARGEST SOLAR HEATING PROJECT, 25MWth

District Solar Heating and Hot Water

Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Date completed: July 2011Princess Noura University

In July 2011, MEI commissioned the world’s largest solar heating project, 25MWth, for PNUW (Princess Noura University for Women) in Saudi Arabia (KSA). MEI’s scope included the design, supply, installation, integration, operation and mainte-nance of the full solar solution. This solution included over 900,000 liters of hot water storage, piping, as well as integration with 70MW conventional boiler capacity. The project is comprised of 36,160m² of large flat plate solar collectors on a 60,000m² rooftop generating 25MWth, with all ancillary equip-ments that support the district heating needs of the university. The solar system is designed to provide 100% of the domestic hot water load during summer and 25% of the heating load (space and DHW) during winter. While the prevailing share of the solar thermal generated heat is directly fed into the district heating grid, during times of higher radiation and low demand of hot water, excess heat is stored. The fixed plate solution presents lower operation and maintenance costs while savings approximately 52 million liters of conventional fuel and 125million kg CO² emission in the 25 year system-life.

A centralized heating solution to cover the applications of the hot water boiler (domestic hot water and pool heating demand). The MEI Mediterraneo Flat Plate collectors are designed to withstand maritime and desert-like condition, 10,000 liter storage tank, circulating pump and heat exchangers have a capacity of 0,4 MWth.

With the need to adopt Green practices, the Marriott Dead Sea Resort employed MEI to design a solar system to improve environmental performance, improve its services and reduce its cost. The Solar System integrates seamlessly with the existing boilers, and has recorded 60-70% savings on the hotel diesel energy bill. The solar matrix is comprised of 275 CPC collectors dispersed on the hotel’s roof. These collectors have high efficiency during the summer and winter. Millennium designed, installed and commissioned the system in eight weeks during the Hotel’s normal operation without any interruption to normal hotel operation. The solar system is expected to pay itself back in less that four years (at diesel price levels of 2009) and last for at least 25 years.

MEI installed a heating system comprised of 140 collec-tors and two heat exchangers to heat and provide hot water for the 10,000 sqm commercial mall that is opera-tional 24 hours a day seven days a week. The system is integrated with the conventional boiler. The client was motivated by a need to reduce diesel cost and the short payback period of three years. The project was implemented in four weeks without interrupting client’s operations, and serves as a demonstration project for further replication in the MENA region.

The Tri-Generation project, which is considered the first of it’s kind in the Middle East Region, at the Mutah University, was built to provide simultaneously three outputs; electrical power, heating as well as cooling, and distilled water from the same solar thermal source (CSP). MEI’s role was to provide and install two adsorp-tion chillers (MEI’s proprietary) with a size of 20KW both. MEI’s chillers use the waste heat from the conden-sation of distilled water to operate.

EU-MED Solar Cooling Project

Solar cooling may sound like a cliché, however, technical-ly and economically it is very feasible. As part of the Aqaba Residence Energy Efficiency (AREE) project funded by the EU - MED-ENEC program, a first of it’s kind solar heating and cooling system was installed and launched in June 2009 in a “green home”. The solar cooling project is based on a thermally driven adsorp-tion chiller, integrated in a cooling tower (water cooled system) manufactured by a third party. The solar system supports the chiller during summer and keeps the house warm during winter. The system also provides domestic hot water around the year for the residents.

The solar system will be utilized for space heating of the dedicated science building (13,000m²). In the near future solar driven adsorp-tion chillers will be added for solar cooling.
