Microsoft
Excel
As we needed to
create a shooting
script during pre-
production, we
decided to use a
spreadsheet format
on this programme.
We used Microsoft Excel as
it is a relatively easy
programme to use that
requires minimal knowledge
in order to have an
understanding of what to do.
Also, as we required the use
of a spreadsheet, this
programme was particularly
handy as spreadsheets are a
main part of why it has been
created.
The shooting script did not take too long to complete
as my partner and I had finished it within a few hours
of working together. The programme was relatively
useful as it enabled us to create a set format to
follow through the entirety of the work. We were
very pleased with it as the clear labels enabled us to
understand what each section was for as well as
showcasing the different pages. However, in terms of
the “page” labels, they are placed in the middle of
each different page; this means that we do not know
exactly where the new page starts so once they were
printed off and used for production, it may have
been difficult to understand what each section was
as only the first page the subheadings.
This gave me an
understanding
of how to use
spreadsheets
more as I now
know how to
incorporate a
page number.
However, as I
was already
quite
experienced in
terms of this, I
found that I did
not develop
much,
personally.

Microsoft
PowerPoint
During pre-
production, I used
this to create my
production schedule
as well as audience
research, opening
sequence
analysations, a
location page and
more.
As my research was
something that I would need
throughout the entirety of
my project, I needed a
programme that would work
very well with presentations.
Due to PowerPoint being
relatively easy to make slide
shows on, I had made great
use of it during my research.
This enabled me to present
my findings in an organised
manner so that I could
reach it when needed.
This programme enabled me to present many pieces
of research in a very organized manner. I got to
showcase things such as analysations, pieces of
research and much more. Due to the piece of
software enabling me to put my work in such an
organised and easily readable manner, I was able to
go back to it other stages of the project when
necessary. For example, when deciding on the mise-
en-scene to incorporate, I looked at my audience
research that was presented on my “Meet My
Audience” page and looked at what my target
audience is and thought about how I could
incorporate their typical needs. I was able to read it
quite well as it was in a readable format and
presented very clearly.
There was not
much
development
from this as I
was already
quite
experienced
with this piece
of software
from previous
projects in the
past.

Blogger This was used
throughout pre-
production as well as
production and post
production so that I
could present my work in
one place together.
This was a
particularly useful
piece of software
that I could use for
my work as it
enabled me to
organise every piece
that I had created
onto one website.
This not only
allowed me to
access it but it also
allowed others, i.e.
my partner, to have
a look at it as well.
This website worked in my favour quite well
as it enabled me to share links from other
websites through embedding. This allowed
my work to be quite visibly pleasing as well
as obvious as to what it is due to the title
being noticeable with a little preview of
what the video/document was of. Other
than links, this website allowed me to
organise my work and reach the pieces that
I may have created a while ago quite easily.
For example, on the side there are a few
links which are separated via creation
month so if I were to want to look at
something from a particular month, I would
only need to click the arrow next to the
relevant title and could search for the right
post without having to navigate off of the
page. This also worked out in my favour as
it allowed to take control of what my work
looked like quite a lot. I was able to choose
a background, colour scheme and much
more that enabled me to create a suitable
and formal theme for my work.
Although I do have some
experience with blogs from
previous encounters, the
usage of Blogger enabled me
to learn more about HTML
coding as well as becoming a
much more organised
person. I learnt HTML as
when I was changing the
embedding code that I
previously added, I had to
look at the specific part
where I placed the code
through the HTML section. I
learnt the codes for bolding,
italic and a new line. In
terms of organization, the
format that I was given (links
to previous work etc.) had
enabled me to find the work
that I created as well as
forcing me to label each
piece with a relevant title so
that I could go back to it
easily.

Issuu As a way of
uploading my pre-
production
research, I used
this site. This was
used for things
such as the “Meet
My Audience”
PowerPoint, “BSR
Visual Style” and
more.
Issuu enabled me to
present my work in an
organised structure that
the public can view. It was
able to let people look at
it without making any
changes to it.
As PowerPoint had the limitations of not
being able to fit things onto one page,
Issuu allows users to zoom in by a simple
scroll so that small font can be seen clearly.
Also, when moving pages, one simple click
can complete this task. I needed something
simple so that I could showcase my work
very easily and this worked out pretty well.
I have never used Issuu
before but I do not feel that I
have developed many skills.
This is because the process
of creating the work
required the use of
PowerPoint, something I was
already familiar with. Also,
the uploading procedure was
very similar to plenty of
other online uploaders, so
this was not too difficult to
understand.
YouTube This was used to
upload my video
content such as my
final opening
sequence, draft
version and a few
more pieces of the
project.
YouTube is a very popular
website that is famous for
its ease in video playing.
As those watching my
videos would be relatively
likely to have a great
understanding of YouTube,
I felt that it was quite
necessary to include the
work on this website.
This worked out very well as the blogging
site that I used to embed the work on
(Blogger) had functioned very well with
YouTube. YouTube had a feature that
allowed me to share the embed code with
any sizing of my choice as well as customize
the player to my preference. This allowed
the look to fit whatever I wanted it to and
also created an easy to watch production.
Also, I got to put in annotations that the
audience members could look at when
understanding my analysations etc.
Nothing too big was really
developed here except for
the use of annotations. As I
was not very familiar with
this aspect of YouTube I got
to understand how the
timings, placement etc. all
worked. Other than that
there was not much that I
gained from this
technological device as I was
already familiar with it from
previous projects.

iPhone This was used
for my audience
research (vox
pop) so that my
partner and I
could record the
answers to our
given questions.
As it is a very mobile and
lightweight device, it was relatively
easy to carry around to various
locations. Due to our respondents
being in various locations, we
needed a recording device that was
able to record people in any given
area. This device could be taken out
at any second and due to it having
an easily accessible camera, we
could record instantly.
The outcome was particularly great for
us as we got to record 10 different
responses to our questions about the
BSR film genre. As I have said, it was
very easy to just take out the phone and
record whatever we wanted. Also, we
were able to attach it to the Mac as
both were Apple products that
connected through the iPhone cable.
Although I do not own an
iPhone, I realised that
there was not much
development that
occurred from using this
technological device. It
was very basic in terms of
recording so I did not
have to go through much
hassle in terms of
functioning it.
iMovie/Mac This was used
for my audience
research (vox
pop) so that my
partner and I
could edit the
answers to our
recorded
responses. It
was also used
to edit my
preliminary
task.
As we recorded each of our
individual respondents and shots
separately to each other, we had to
find a way to incorporate them all
together into one video. This was
done through iMovie on the Mac as
it was a very smooth running and
easily usable programme.
As iMovie saves automatically, we did
not have to worry about the project
failing on us. All we had to do was work
on our research video editing for three
hours and it was finished. As the
preliminary task was the first time I had
used the software, it took me an hour to
complete but I had gone through a bit
of trouble of understand how to use it.
However, we did find trouble in terms of
connecting the phone to the device as
it did not work until we kept trying.
Nonetheless, it worked in the end and
we were able to edit the work in just a
few hours.
I gained an understanding
of how to use the latest
version of iMovie as I was
not very experienced with
this newer edition. With
the Mac, nothing had
changed since the
previous use of it that I
encountered so there was
not much personal
development in that case.

Digital
Camcorder
Every shot within
the production
stage that needed a
visual recording
(other than
graphics). For
example, in the
screenshot below of
the moment at 0:25
where the main
character is
presented in a
library using a
laptop.
This allowed us to
incorporate an artistic view
as its mobility allowed it to
be quite flexible, thus
following the route that we
wanted. Also, it was a
relatively lightweight piece
of equipment that could be
transported to various
different locations without
much hassle. Another reason
for using this piece of
equipment was because it
was easily transferrable to
the computer that we would
edit the shots on. As we
would need all of the
recorded work to be
compiled together, we
needed to use a piece of
recording equipment that
was able to be placed on an
editing software without fail,
and this did exactly that.
The quality of the work recorded from this device
was very good as we were able to capture as much
of the framing that we intended to obtain. However,
there was one shot in particular, as seen at 1:31,
which was significantly more difficult to film than
the other shots.
The reason behind this being so difficult was
because it required the use of a non technological
device (a tripod) to be moved in order for the camera
to capture the framing that we wanted to obtain
from the shot. As the camera operator, I had to move
the tripod fast but not too fast as everything was
recorded was going to be needed for the actual
production. If the camera was more flexible than its
current stage then hopefully filming would have held
much more ease. Nonetheless, with the other shots
that we recorded from this technological device we
faced much more ease in terms of production. The
camera was very fitted on the tripod and monopod,
so worked very flexbily and worked very well in our
static shots, enabling us to create both fast paced
and slow atmospheres.
From the use of
this piece of
equipment, I
have been able
to enhance my
camera work as
I have learnt
how to hold a
camera more
still and how to
adapt to the
given
surroundings.
Due to its
mobility I have
been able to
work in areas
such as parks
and have learnt
how to hold a
camera still
whilst moving.

Blogger When we needed to
create a call sheet or
just keep our work
up to date in
general, this was
used.
It was an easily accessible
website that allowed us to
upload our work quite well.
We were able to upload our
work quite simply as it was
functional with other sites
such as Issuu.
This was very useful as we were able to
look back at the work placed on the site
when necessary. For example, when we
made the call sheets for a previous filming
session, we had the option to look at our
“reminders” for the next time we recorded.
Also, we were able to keep track of how
well we were doing and how much we had
left by creating production logs on our blogs
each week. This was something that we
could use to look back on when we need to
find out how we did something or how well
it was done. Overall, Blogger came to be
quite useful as we did need it for the short
tasks.
I have never used Blogger
before but I am
experienced in the
blogging field. I did not
gain many skills due to
me already
understanding how to
upload photos, change
text etc.

iMovie/Mac This was used to edit
our opening
sequence as well as
our evaluation
videos.
It is a very smooth running
programme that we both
obtained experience on
before using it to edit out
finished project. With the
previous experience, we
were able to have an
understanding of how it
works, thus being able to
complete it with greater
ease, rather than starting
again from a different
program.
This worked out well as we were able to
complete the sequence and evaluations in
time and with minimal issues. The program
did freeze at times but as it saves
automatically, we did not have to worry
about losing any of our edited product. We
were able to also learn how to use other
features that we did not know about such
as the cropping and how to
incorporate/remove the Ken Burns zoom in.
As said previously, we
learnt how to crop a
video as well as
add/remove the Ken
Burns zoom in effect.
Also, we obtained a
greater understanding of
how to edit sound from a
clip as we learned how to
sync it in with what was
happening on screen.
Logic/Mac This was used to
create our music
throughout the
second scene of our
opening sequence.
There are many different
sets of instruments that
people who do not know
how to play an instrument
can use in order to produce
some music. This was very
needed for us as we did not
know how to play an
instrument at the time.
Although it took a few drafts, we worked
out a particular musical piece that we felt
created the intensified and dramatic
outlook that we wanted. The software was
relatively simple to use and we were quite
pleased with the end product created.
We both learned how to
create a piece of music
on this software and we
learned all the basic
functions. We have not
used this software before
so it was quite new to us,
meaning that there was a
lot to learn.

iPhone/
Photobooth/
Mac
We used both to
record ourselves for
our evaluation tasks.
These were both attainable
at the times and were very
easy to edit from. As
Photobooth was on the Mac
already, it was very simple to
put it onto iMovie. As the
iPhone is an Apple product
like the Mac, they
functioned very well
together.
Both had created great quality videos that
were very editable on the iMovie software.
They also allowed the sound to be picked
up quite well so it was relatively easy to
hear what we were saying. However, at
times the sound had to be edited so that
we could hear it, but other than that it was
quite useful.
There was not much
development besides the
use of Photobooth.
Neither of us had ever
really used this program
but the instructions were
extremely straight
forward. We got to
understand how we
could record and take
pictures from the
webcam provided on the
Mac.
Photoshop We used this so that
we could create our
production and film
logos.
I was personally very familiar
with this software so we
decided to use it. Also, it was
able to create exactly what
we wanted.
This worked out in our favour particularly
well as we were able to create exactly what
we wanted. However, we did face the issue
of having to change “Concrete
CorporationS” to “Concrete Corporation” as
there is no such thing as “corporations” in
the film industry. The problem here was
that we did not save the PSD file so we had
to go back and edit the image all over again.
We did not remember our font so we had
to settle for something that was the closest
we could possibly find as time was running
out.
We learnt to never delete
files no matter how
insignificant they may be.

YouTube This was used to
upload our opening
sequence ,
evaluations and to
create our
annotated
evaluation of our
opening sequence.
YouTube is a very reliable
source in terms of video
uploading. People are
generally not faced with
much trouble as they are
typically very used to it , so it
would cause a minimal
amount of trouble. Also, it is
a video site that allows
annotations, something that
was very necessary for our
evaluation.
Every video was uploaded perfectly with
minimal issues faced. The quality was of the
same that we expected, and viewers could
choose whatever quality they wanted (from
240p to 720p). This allowed our project to
be seen the way that we planned. The one
problem that I faced was the annotations.
When the “delete” button was pressed, I
expected to delete the following letter, but
this ended up deleting the annotation and I
was unaware of how to get it back. This
resulted in me having to start over again
with my work.
YouTube was something
that we were both quite
familiar with so we did
not face much trouble in
terms of understanding
what to do.
Blogger To organise my work
so that it can be
seen as a whole
together.
It was a way to incorporate
different forms of my work
(i.e. videos, text etc.) into
one place. It enabled those
that wanted to look at the
work to be able to do so
without having to go
through a bunch of different
searches.
Although it worked out quite well
throughout the majority of the work (such
as when I got to put in textual evaluations
and links to PDFs etc.) the video
annotations did not work very well. Due to
me wanting to make the video size at 500 x
280 on my blog, this shortened down the
amount of text you can see from an
annotation. However, Blogger allowed me
to create big, bold and red writing that
warned my viewers that they needed to
click on the video to see the full
annotations.
At this stage we were
already familiar with how
to use the website, so it
did not really require any
special
knowledge/lessons.

PowerPoint This was used for
some of the
evaluation tasks
(such as this one).
I needed to incorporate
something that looked nice
and allowed me to create a
PDF on.
This turned out to work quite well as there
was a lot that I could do in terms of
presentation. This included tables,
colouring and more. However, one downfall
was that it was relatively difficult to fit a
range of words onto one page.
Again, I was quite
familiar with this but I
understood that I needed
to shorten down my
words in order to fit a lot
of information onto each
page.
Issuu A way to present an
un-editable version
of my PowerPoints
onto my blog.
I did not want it to be edited,
nor did I want it to look
unprofessional. Issuu
enabled me to do this very
easily.
The best thing to come out of this was that
although the font came out small because
of the high amount of detail put into the
PowerPoint, Issuu enabled users to zoom in
quite far if necessary, which it was. This
made up for the high amount of detail, so
having this much information was not a
problem as it was still quite readable.
I did not develop
anything from this as all
of the skills needed were
already required
elsewhere.

LiveType To create the credits
for our opening
sequence.
We wanted a “typing”
graphic to come up with our
credits.
As the moment where the credits turned up
was quite intense, we felt that this graphic
did not work very well to build the
tenseness. So we ended up using the
iMovie graphics as they were very impactful
and suited to our theme.
We learnt that
sometimes the simple
ones are better,
depending on the
situation. Also, we learnt
how to create graphics
on LiveType.
