FROM THE DIRECTOR

the most highly anticipated time of year is here. it’s the time when locals and tourists alike awaken from winter’s slumber, rub their eyes, and flock to the coast for a rejuvenation of spirit. it doesn’t get much better than summertime in maine.

so it is with great excitement that we announce a new series of courses in the continuing studies department. this summer students will have the opportunity to capture the spirit of maine through artistic endeavors that leave the studio and head into the great outdoors. courses that are included in the local exploration series have been developed as site specific courses, meaning we selected a location and developed content to complement the beauty and inspiration of the area.

experience a weekend of art immersion on a private island, gain insight into the natural environment of animals, capture the energy of the pier as it transfers to the

sea on board a historic windjammer, take a ferry ride to grasp island community life from the eye of a discrete observer, or create public art with natural objects found in the environment. the local exploration series will inspire you to create all year long.

the artist retreat series: local exploration• cow island, found sculpture, p.6• cow island, drawing and painting, p.6• fort williams: studio by the sea, p.6• gilsland farm audubon center: animals to landscape, p.7• peak’s island: drawing in public, p.7• portland schooner company: drawing the sail, p.7

whether you have been to these places before or they are new to you, experience maine from a different perspective— the perspective of an artist.

courses and WorkshopsContinuing Studies develops programming based on the needs and interests of Portland’s community. Courses are designed for adults ages 18 and older and are offered in a variety of disciplines and formats. Extended courses are offered for 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 weeks. One-day and weekend workshops are offered to give students the opportunity to experience an art form with a shorter time commitment. In the adult program, credit for completion of a Continuing Studies course is offered in the form of Continuing Education Units (CEUs). The Continuing Education Unit is a nationally accepted unit of measurement

for individual participation in continuing education courses. One CEU is issued for ten hours of class participation.

Week long intensivesWeek long intensives generally take place during breaks in the academic year. The classes typically run 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday for one week. Students experience the same high level of instruction as an extended course in a condensed amount of time.

CPR 121Woodcut printmakingFaculty: katherine HardingTime: Monday - Friday, 9 am - 3 pm, 8/6/12 - 8/10/12Sessions: Week-Long Intensive CEUs: 3.0Tuition: $320 Studio Fee: $45

Hands-on introduction to this relief printmaking process will commence in the first hour. The oldest form of printmaking with its roots in ancient China, woodcut printmaking is a reductive process. The board is carved away and the surface remaining is rolled with ink and printed. This printmaking method is suitable for cloth, as well as paper.

Inspired by birch and fir, rocks and cattails, pond and sky, a small group of participants will learn and share in a variety of methods to alter the surface of fabric and paper. We will be attentive to the basics: color, line, composition, and the potential of the materials. Working outdoors as well as inside, we will begin by carving a board and then print using the studio press, using water-based inks on paper and fabric. Drawing with scissors, painting with thread, applying ink and paints to paper, cotton, and silk, will all come into play during the week. Participants may create a personal catalogue of the methods and materials explored, bound in a simple book as a memory aid and a memoir of a luminous week of creativity.

CLA 040the art of StoryFaculty: Frank O SmithTime: Saturday, 9 am - 3 pm, 7/14/12 - 7/21/12CEUs: 1.2Tuition: $100 Studio Fee: $0

Compelling stories all have three essential elements. They are inseparably linked and drive the dramatic narrative at all levels of story structure – from scenes to chapters to full story arcs. They are the means by which characters are forced to take actions that progressively alter the world they inhabit. And as a consequent, forcefully alter the trajectory of their lives – for better or worse. This two-day workshop is built around writing exercises designed to sharpen writers’ mastery of these essential elements, and to deepen understanding of critical principles for effectively framing stories, developing fully realized characters, and for intensifying dynamic tension. Participants will be encouraged to share work. There will be opportunity for one-on-one dialogue with the instructor. The workshop will take place on two successive Saturdays to provide time for participants to work independently in the interim to clarify issues for follow-up discussion.

Student Supply List: Pen and paper.

the evolution of an adult continuing education student

i have heard it said that “summer in maine is like candy”, and as a lifelong mainer myself, i could not agree more. new england residents endure the cold winter months each year and thus our short summer season is hard earned and well deserved. we invite you to share some of your maine summer with us learning, exploring, and enjoying the warmth of the coming months. we have planned a wide variety of course offerings, including many of your time-honored favorites and some exciting new programming that is specifically designed to enhance your maine summer experience.

youth educators often quote the principles of pedagogy when designing and facilitating learning activities. as adults, we transition away from dependent pedagogical learning toward a more self-actualized pattern referred to as the andragogical frame. andragogy is a series of learning strategies focused on adults and has a core set of assumptions that define the self-directed nature of mature learners as compared to children. at the core of andragogy is the notion that “experience provides the basis for learning activities,” meaning that our perspective continues to grow and evolve with our accumulating experiences. andragogy states that our interpretive lens continuously evolves so long as we challenge it, thus each time we experience an event, it is from a different perspective. we welcome and encourage students to retake and gain new perspective on courses they have already taken, knowing that as life-long learners, there is always room for growth and breakthrough. we also recognize the pragmatic nature of adult learners, and their need to find applications for their learning. we are proud to support this trend by continuing to offer reasonably sized courses that provide plenty of interaction with faculty allowing students to gain the specificity they require.

it is also through an andragogical lens that we encourage our repeat students to branch out into new courses and expand their comfort zones. much of the evolving worldview central to rewarding adult learning comes from confronting “disorienting dilemmas” that arise when personal paradigms are challenged. we hope you will consider nurturing transformation through education by branching out into a new course while continuing to gain perspective from a personal favorite. please feel free to contact our offices if you have any points of clarification regarding our courses. with rare exception, most continuing studies courses at meca are designed with the explorer in mind, so we hope you’ll chart new artistic and design territories with us this summer.
