ME!!!

So What do you do?

I have a plan!

So,what y

ou have to

do

is…

How do we do that?

That’s a great question!!

So, lets take a couple minutes and with your group decide

what kind of government you want to have!

Make sure you figure out who is going to have the power!

Make sure your government takes into

account all those purposes of

government you listed.

Also, take a couple minutes to come up

with a couple laws for your government! Be

imaginative!!

Well, first you need to pick a type of government!

You can find the different types of governments in your book on page 12

Remember! You have to make a form of government that everyone on the island

is going to approve!!!

One last thing: The rest of the island is giving you one week (20 minutes ) to figure this

out, or…..

Strangers!!!!!

Thomas

• Tom has been trying to get your attention since we all decided to create a government, and wants you to base the government on the idea that people need to give up some liberty in order to make the government work.

John Locke

• Wants to make sure that everyone has a right to protect their rights and liberties.

• Thinks that the government should be split up, but we all still owe the government our allegiance.

Monty

• Monty wants your government to make sure that all the power is broken up so that no one has all the authority.

• He also recommends making sure that people can check to make sure that the rest of the government is keeping things in order.

Russell

• Wants the power to be in the hands of the people.

• Someone needs to have power, but their power HAS to be based in the hands of the people.

In Review!

• Hobbes– Social Contract theory

• All the power needs to be centered in a one central government

• Locke– Believes in Social Contract theory, but also argues for

separation of powers

• Montesquieu– Also believes in separation of powers, but also argues that the

branches and people need to have checks and balances in order to make sure government is working

• Rousseau – Believes that someone needs to have the power, but the power

needs to be centered in the hands of the people, i.e. (V clip)
