McNair Scholars 3rd Annual Poster Presentation & Faculty Mentor Recognition

Ten McNair Scholars presented their research at the poster session held April 15 at the University Center, Lone Star Ballroom A. Research this year included a variety of topics, including: “Love it or Change it: Dyadic Locus of Control as a Predictor of Self – Esteem, Happiness, and Relationship Satisfaction” and “The Effect of Physical Fatigue on Visual Recognition and Visual Tracking of College Students.” This year’s poster session was a success. Many staff and students were able to join the McNair Scholars as they presented their projects. Following the Poster Session was a luncheon recognizing Faculty Mentors and student presenters for Spring 2014. Scholars received a Certificate of Excellence, while the mentors were awarded a Certificate of Appreciation.

December: Complete and submit all applications, keeping two copies of every section for your records. Verify that your recommendations have been sent.

September: Register for the November GRE subject test (if necessary). Finalize your list of prospective schools, and pick a professor or two from each whose research interests mirror your own. Contact your recommenders. Keep polishing your statement of purpose.

October: Send your recommenders supplemental materials (like your resume, personal statement, etc.) that they can use as a reference. Make contact with students and professors at your prospective schools. Arrange a campus visit if you can.

November: Have someone in the field and a few smart (and honest) friends read over your personal statement. Take the GRE subject test; make sure that your scores will be sent directly to schools.

August: Take the GRE general test. If you're not happy with your scores, sign up to take it again. Begin writing your statement of purpose.

January: Focus on financial aid—fill out the FAFSA online and look into private loans, grants and fellowships.

February & March: Try to relax while you wait it out. This will probably be the most relaxing time you'll have for the next several years, so enjoy it.

April: Celebrate your acceptances. Appeal the aid package (or apply for alternative loans) if the amount the school offers you doesn't meet your needs.

Here's a sample schedule for a student hoping to enter grad school in the fall. This is a best-case scenario which leaves time to craft a great application, resolve unforeseen problems (a lost transcript, a delinquent recommender) and submit with time to spare. Of course, you'll need to tweak this schedule to fit your schools' deadlines.

Being part of McNair was an intimidating experience because it

exposed me to how unprepared I was for grad school. Before I joined the program all I knew was that I wanted to attend grad school, but I didn't realize that to continue my education there was a series of deadlines and procedures I needed to adhere to. McNair allowed me a safe space to tackle the challenges that came with applying to graduate programs across the nation, and it provided me with guidance when the process became too overwhelming. Personally, writing my paper for the McNair journal prepared me for the toughest part of grad school, writing your thesis in a timely manner. The program walked me through the process of finding a mentor, brainstorming paper topics related to my field of interest, and most importantly creating a game plan for a successful completion. McNair provides students with a mock experience of what can be expected in grad school, but the skill learned in the program will set students up for success. Just remember to choose a program that fits YOUR needs and interests, and don't procrastinate.

Dr. Frank Spaniol, Professor of Kinesiology at Texas A&M University-

Corpus Christi, recently traveled to Bangkok, Thailand, to appear in his second episode of Stan Lee’s “Superhumans.” Spaniol served as an on-screen sport science expert to analyze the skills of Kie Willis, a renowned free runner and parkour world champion from London, England. The show is scheduled to air this spring on the History Channel. Spaniol, a national and international leader in sport science research, has traveled across the nation and around the world to share his expertise. He has published numerous articles in national and international journals and has been awarded more than 20 research grants for exercise science and instructional technology. Dr. Spaniol has been a McNair Scholars Program Mentor for the last two years and helped each of his McNair Scholars enter graduate school. He was a low-income, first-generation college student who epitomizes what can be achieved through dedication and hard work. He is a caring and motivating mentor that helps his students pursue and achieve their academic and professional goals.
