Meet Guttenberg Councilman Richie Delafuente

You can hear the passion in Councilman Richie Delafuente’s voice when he talks about helping residents in need. As a volunteer member

of Guttenberg’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and coordinator of the town’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) prior to joining the town council, he participated in numerous efforts to assist resident families in times of crisis.

One particular incident that stands out was when a call came in during the third quarter of the most recent Superbowl that a family had been displaced from their home. “The property was so derelict that the roof had a severe leak and the place flooded,” he recalled. As a result of the emergency the Fire Department had to shut off all power to the building.

With a large family including four school kids and various extended family members suddenly homeless, Richie dropped everything and went to work getting them settled. Through the efforts of OEM, the police, and Mayor Wayne Zitt, accommodations were made with the Marriott Hotel to provide temporary housing.

“Within two or three hours they had a roof over their heads,” said Richie. “I made sure the bus picked up and dropped off the children to school every day. The kids didn’t miss a beat. The family didn’t lose a day of school or work.”

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGSRichie’s parents met in 1945 after his mother emigrated from Colombia, where she was born and raised. Together the Delafuentes moved to Jackson Heights, Queens, where Richie and his two brothers were raised in a one-bedroom apartment.

Taking a job in a service station in Bayside while still in high school, Richie worked his way up and was able to take over the business when the owner retired. After selling the station he wound up working as a contractor for a major communications company. Eventually he parlayed that into a position as Business Development Manager for the company.

Meanwhile he indulged a lifelong interest and earned a pilot license, purchasing a single-engine Cherokee that he kept hangered in Farmingdale, Long Island. After a few years he traded that for a large, twin-engine plane

in need of work. With his service station background he was able to refurbish the plane, and continue his regular trips up and down the East Coast to visit his parents in Florida.

Although the planes are now gone, Richie retains his pilot license, and continues to be a member of the Iron Gate Chapter. “They asked me to join,” he said. “We hold three meetings a year at the 21 Club. It’s basically a community where we have lunch with the Air Force so that we’re up on what the military of this country is up to.”

It’s awards season in Guttenberg, with town employee Marisol Montanez named a “Woman of the Year” by Hudson County and Michelle Dejesus picking up an Emmy Award for her makeup work at Telemundo. VOICE OF GUTTENBERGIn September of 2011 Richie moved into an apartment in the Galaxy Towers, and fell in love with the area. Not only that, he discovered an interest in politics.

“It really enthralled me that you could talk to your neighbor and he was the mayor,” he said of fellow Galaxy resident Gerald Drasheff. “It drew me in that this was a small town, where your voice could actually mean something.”

Switching political affiliations from Independent to Democrat, he took a volunteer position as a Democratic committeeman. From there it was a straight trajectory to CERT, OEM, and eventually town council, being elected into office in November 2017.

In this role Richie serves as liaison between the council and the Department of Public Works (DPW), which he calls a “well-orchestrated machine,” singling out praise for Acting Superintendent George Velez, who recently completing his public works certification.

“This was a tough winter,” he pointed out. “But snow removal was excellent, even with all the snow, and the trees collapsing.”

Speaking of his goals on the council, Richie cites oversight of tax money as a priority. In addition, “I really want to help all the people who really need it; help the undocumented get documented,” he said.

“I love this town, the buildings, everything about this place,” he concluded. “My heart is here,”

Marisol Montañez Honored by County During

Women’s History Month

Guttenberg resident and Senior Services Coordinator Marisol Montañez was honored by Hudson County for her lasting impact on the community. Marisol was one of 13 women to receive the accolade at a ceremony during Women’s History Month.

The annual presentation was themed this year to honor “women who fight all forms of discrimination against women.” Guttenberg Mayor Wayne Zitt and the town council nominated Marisol for the prestigious honor based on her history, background, and hard work on behalf of community members – especially children and senior citizens. The town also presented her with a proclamation naming her as Guttenberg’s 2018 Woman of the Year.

“Marisol loves to serve our seniors,” said Mayor Zitt. “She’s always there whenever they need anything. She’s appreciated by many and this was a good opportunity to show her how much we appreciate her.”

Michelle Dejesus from Nikita’s Salon Wins Emmy Award for Hair & Makeup

Want to get your hair and makeup done by an Emmy Award-winning professional? Then head on over to Nikita’s Salon in the lower level of the Galaxy mall and make an appointment with Michelle Dejesus, who picked up her first Emmy during the 61st annual NY Emmy Awards Gala on Saturday April 14 at the Marriott Marquis.

Michelle won in the category of “Craft Specialty: Makeup” for her work with WNJU Telemundo 47, where she plies her trade five days a week, preparing news anchors and others for broadcast. Her day starts long

before dawn in the network’s Fort Lee studio, where she has been working for close to five years.

Then in the late morning she heads to Nikita’s for job number two: serving the customers of Guttenberg and vicinity.

Although Michelle initially pursued a career in accounting and took a job at a pharmacy in Fairview, those were just detours on her real career path. She was always interested in hair and makeup and began by working on friends at home while still a teen, going on to get her license and a degree in cosmetology at Teterboro.

Then about 2008 she started working in the salon in the Galaxy mall. Five years ago the salon changed hands and became Nikita’s. Michelle stayed, along with her loyal customers.

AND THE WINNER IS…Michelle’s boss, salon co-owner Pam, accompanied her to the gala awards and couldn’t have been happier about the win, proudly displaying a congratulatory poster in the window of the shop.

The Emmy victory came as a huge surprise to Michelle. “My colleagues pushed me to submit,” she said, but she had her reservations. “I said no, that’s for people with more experience.” Eventually she relented, however, and entered one submission – at which point she was informed that first-time nominees simply don’t win awards.

“And then I ended up winning.”

When her name was announced at the gala, Michelle was shocked. “I was up against a colleague, so it was bittersweet,” she recalled. “It was like ‘Yeah!’ Then, ‘Sorry.’”

The award was voted on and presented by the New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The event was attended by 800 television and media professionals, including many familiar television personalities from news, entertainment, and sports. “These are the most important individuals in New York media,” states the Academy website, “all on hand to salute the outstanding accomplishments of their peers.”

But equally important to Michelle is the recognition of her friends and customers. “I’m very appreciative of everybody who’s helped me along the way,” she said. “People here know me really well and they’re really happy.”

Born in Hoboken to Puerto Rican parents Luis and Angela Montañez, Marisol grew up and attended schools in Hoboken and Jersey City before moving to Guttenberg.

Marisol currently coordinates and is the event planner for all of Guttenberg’s senior events and activities. She is a member of Hudson Community Action Corporation and the Guttenberg Board of Education, and serves as a commissioner on the Guttenberg Housing Authority. She also volunteers extensively for town and police department events.

Marisol is married to Guttenberg police Sergeant Ralph Martinez and is the proud mother of Natasha, Kaylin, Bryan, and Nyla, and is grandmother of two-month-old Isaiah.

“I am honored and humbly thankful to receive this award,” said Marisol upon receiving the proclamation. “It’s truly a pleasure to serve my community. Thank you to my family for your love, patience, and understanding of what I feel is my life’s calling to serve and work for my community.”

The county ceremony was held on Tuesday, March 27 in the Justice William J. Brennan Courthouse in Jersey City, with congratulatory remarks from Hudson County Executive Thomas DeGise and Chairman of the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders Anthony Vainieri. Among the many guests in attendance were North Bergen Mayor and State Senator Nicholas Sacco and Guttenberg Councilman John Habermann.

New Guttenberg Resource Center in Galaxy Mall to Offer Library Services

Construction is underway on the new Guttenberg Resource Center to be located in the lower level of the Galaxy mall. The resource center will be a division of the North Bergen Free Public Library and will contain computer stations for public use, along with books and periodicals for loan to residents.

Guttenberg residents have long been eligible to use the North Bergen Free Public Library at its two sites on Bergenline Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard. Now, through this expanded partnership, Guttenberg will participate in BCCLS (pronounced “buckles”), a program allowing residents to order any item in circulation within a network of 76 public libraries across northern New Jersey.

The item will be delivered to the resource center for pickup by the resident.

BCCLS (Bergen County Cooperative Library System) has over 600,000 registered cardholders and circulates over 12,000,000 items annually in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Passaic counties.

In addition, the center will hold informational, developmental, and public service sessions and classes programmed by Library Director Sai Rao, similar to the extensive offerings available at the North Bergen library sites.

The Guttenberg Resource Center is expected to open in late May. Watch for announcements soon regarding the official ribbon-cutting.

Visit Guttenberg’s New Improved Website

If you haven’t checked out Guttenberg’s website recently, you’re in for a treat. As of March, the town has a new, vastly improved site that is not only cleaner, better organized, and easier to use, it’s now fully responsive for cell phones and handheld devices.

Guttenberg’s town website was launched in May of 2004 and was the recipient of that year’s New Jersey State League of Municipalities’ design and content award in the 43rd annual Municipal Public Information Contest.

But times have changed, and so have the ways people interact with the internet. Nowadays more than half of online traffic is conducted on mobile devices. The redesigned site uses responsive web design (RWD), allowing for optimal viewing and interaction on a wide range of devices in an active and engaging format.

On top of that, content has been expanded and improved to provide more helpful information, as well as increased coverage of local and regional events and many more photographs. Forms and contact information are available quickly and easily. Calendars are a click away, along with detailed information on upcoming events and activities. Previous postings and information on past meetings are archived and readily accessible.

Want to pay your MUA bill or traffic ticket online? You can do that. Looking for garbage or recycling schedules, a zoning map, or a way to report an issue? It’s all right at your fingertips.

Along with the Guttenberg Brief newsletter, launched last year and mailed out monthly, the newly redesigned website is part of a concerted effort to improve communications between the town and our residents.

Library Offers ‘A Taste of Greece’ on May 19

The North Bergen Free Public Library is once again hosting a grand celebration of food and culture from around the globe, this time focusing on “A Taste of Greece.”

Everyone is invited to come and enjoy an afternoon of free entertainment, and to sample delicious Greek cuisine on Saturday, May 19 beginning at 1 p.m. at the library, 8411 Bergenline Ave.

Guttenberg Recreation is pleased to announce that registration is open for two great programs for students in grades 6 to 8. We will hold a Musical Theatre class every Monday at 6 p.m. and a DJ club every Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Learn the basics of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, and acting in the Musical Theatre Club with Mr. and Mrs. K.

Learn how to become a DJ/music producer in the DJ Club, where Mr. and Mrs. K will teach the fundamentals on how to mix music and create beats and sounds for a crowd.

Conozca al Concejal de Guttenberg Richie Delafuente

Puede escuchar la pasión del concejal Richie Delafuente en su voz cuando habla de ayudar a los residentes necesitados. Como un miembro voluntario del Guttenberg’s Community Emergency

Con una familia numerosa, incluidos cuatro niños de escuela y diversos miembros de la familia ampliada de repente desamparados, Richie lo dejó todo y se fue a trabajar para ayudarlos. A través de los esfuerzos de los OEM, la policía y el Alcalde Wayne Zitt, alojamientos fueron hechos con el Hotel Marriott para proporcionar alojamiento temporal.

Tomando un trabajo en una estación de servicio en Bayside mientras aún estaba en la escuela secundaria, Richie fue subiendo y fue capaz de tomar riendas del negocio cuando el dueño se retiró. Después de vender la estación él terminó trabajando como contratista de una empresa importante de comunicaciones. Finalmente valido esa posición como Gerente de Desarrollo de Negocios de la Compañía.

Mientras tanto él cedía un interés permanente y obtuvo una licencia de piloto, comprando un motor único Cherokee que mantuvo guardado en Farmingdale, Long Island. Marisol Montañez honrada por el Condado Durante el

Mes de la Historia de la Mujer

La Residente de Guttenberg Marisol Montañez, asistente ejecutiva al Administrador de la Ciudad de Guttenberg, fue honrada por el Condado de Hudson por su impacto duradero en la comunidad. Marisol fue una de las 13 mujeres que recibió el galardón en una ceremonia durante el mes de la Historia de la Mujer.

La presentación anual de temática fue este año en honor a “las mujeres que luchan contra todas las formas de discriminación contra la mujer.” El Alcalde de Guttenberg Wayne Zitt y los concejales nominaron a Marisol da para el prestigioso honor basado en su historia, los antecedentes y el trabajo arduo, en nombre de los miembros de la comunidad, especialmente niños y ancianos. La ciudad también le entregó una proclamación nombrándola como Mujer del año 2018 de Guttenberg.

“Marisol ama servir a nuestros ancianos”, dijo el Alcalde Zitt. “Ella siempre está ahí cuando ellos necesitas algo. Ella es apreciada por muchos y esta fue una buena oportunidad para mostrarle cuánto la apreciamos.”

Michelle Dejesus de Nikita’s Salon Gana el Premio Emmy Por el Cabello y Maquillaje

Michelle ganó en la categoría de “Artesanía de Especialidad: maquillaje” por su trabajo con WNJU Telemundo 47, donde ella hace su comercio cinco días a la semana, preparando los presentadores de noticias y otros para

La victoria del Emmy llegó como una gran sorpresa para Michelle. “Mis compañeros me han empujado a presentar”, dijo, pero tenía sus reservas. “Yo dije que no, eso es para personas con más experiencia.” Finalmente ella cedió, y presentaron una sola sumisión, y fue informada que candidatos por primera vez simplemente no ganar premios.

“Y después acabe ganando.”

Cuando su nombre fue anunciado en la gala, Michelle se sorprendió. “Yo estaba en contra de un colega, por lo que fue agridulce”, recordó. “Era como “Si!” Entonces, ‘lo siento.”

El premio fue votado y presentado por el capítulo de Nueva York de la National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. VOZ DE GUTTENBERGEn septiembre del 2011 Richie se trasladó a un apartamento en Galaxy Towers, y se enamoró de la zona. No sólo eso, él descubrió un interés en la política.

“Realmente me cautivó que usted podría hablar con su vecino y era el alcalde”, dijo de su vecino s Gerald Drasheff residente de Galaxy. “Me gusto que esta era una ciudad pequeña, donde su voz realmente podría significar algo.”

Cambiando afiliaciones políticas de independiente a Demócrata, asumió una posición de voluntario como committeeman democrático. Desde allí fue una trayectoria recta de CERT, OEM, y finalmente el Concejo, siendo elegido en Noviembre de 2017.

En este papel, Richie sirve como enlace entre el Concejo y el Departamento de Obras Públicas (DPW), que él llama “una máquina bien orquestada”, singularizando elogios para el Superintendente interino Jorge Vélez, quien ha terminado recientemente su certificación de obras públicas.

“Este fue un duro invierno”, señaló. “Pero la remoción de la nieve fue excelente, incluso con toda la nieve, y los árboles derrumbándose.”

Hablando de sus metas en el concejo, Richie cita la supervisión del dinero de los impuestos como una prioridad. Además, “Yo realmente quiero ayudar a todas las personas que realmente lo necesitan; ayudar a los indocumentados obtener documentos”, dijo.

“Amo esta ciudad, los edificios, todo acerca de este lugar”, concluyó. “Mi Corazón está aquí.”

Nacida en Hoboken, de padres Puertorriqueños Luis y Angela Montañez, Marisol creció y asistió a escuelas en Hoboken y Jersey City, antes de mudarse a Guttenberg.

Marisol actualmente coordina y es es planificadora de todos los eventos y actividades de ancianos de Guttenberg. Ella es un miembro de Hudson Community Action Corporation y la Junta de Educación de Guttenberg, y sirve como una comisionada en la Guttenberg Housing Authority. Ella también hace trabajos voluntarios extensos para eventos de la ciudad y el departamento de policía.

Marisol está casada con el sargento de la policía de Guttenberg Ralph Martínez y es la orgullosa madre de Natasha, Kaylin, Bryan y Nyla, y es abuela de Isaiah que tiene dos meses.

La ceremonia del condado se celebró el Martes 27 de Marzo en el Tribunal del Juez William J. Brennan en Jersey City, con expresiones de felicitación del Ejecutivo del Condado de Hudson Thomas DeGise y el presidente de la Junta del Condado Hudson Freeholder Anthony Vainieri. El sitio web de la ciudad de Guttenberg fue lanzado en Mayo de 2004 y fue el destinatario de ese año de la liga estatal de Nueva Jersey de Municipios” premio de diseño y contenido el 43º Concurso Anual de Información Pública Municipal.

Pero los tiempos han cambiado y también lo han hecho las formas en que las personas interactúan con el internet. El rediseñado sitio utiliza diseño web sensible (RWD), lo que permite una visualización óptima y la interacción sobre una amplia gama de dispositivos en un activo y atractivo formato.

Encima de eso, el contenido ha sido ampliado y mejorado para obtener más información útil, así como el aumento de la cobertura de eventos locales y regionales y muchas más fotografías. Los calendarios están sólo a un clic de distancia, junto con información detallada sobre los próximos eventos y actividades. Nuevo Centro de Recursos de Guttenberg en el Galaxy Mall Ofrece Servicios de Biblioteca

Se está construyendo el nuevo Centro de Recursos de Guttenberg que será ubicado en el nivel inferior del Galaxy mall. El centro de recursos será una división de Biblioteca Pública Gratuita de North Bergen y contendrá las estaciones de computadoras para uso público, junto con libros y revistas para prestar a los residentes.

Los residentes hace rato han sido elegibles a utilizar la Biblioteca Pública gratuita de North Bergen en sus dos sitios en Bergenline Avenue y Kennedy Boulevard. Ahora, a través de esta asociación ampliada, Guttenberg participará en BCCLS (pronunciado “bukles”), un programa que permite a los residentes ordenar cualquier artículo en circulación dentro de una red de 76 bibliotecas públicas de

todo el norte de Nueva Jersey. El artículo será entregado al centro de recursos para su recogida por parte de los residentes.

BCCLS (Bergen County Cooperative Library System) ha registrado más de 600,000 tarjetahabientes y circula más de 12,000,000 artículos anuales en Bergen, Essex, Hudson y los condados de Passaic.

Además, el centro celebrará informativos, de desarrollo y de servicio público, sesiones y clases programadas por la Directora de la biblioteca Sai Rao, similar a las amplias ofertas disponibles en los sitios de la biblioteca de North Bergen.
