Membership Meeting, 1 April 2015 Held the 1st Wednesday of the Month at 10:00
We had 43 members in attendance at the membership meeting this month. We served 2437 meals in the month of March. A big thank-you goes out to our kitchen staff for all their hard work and effort to make that number served possible. Remember our Volunteer luncheon is coming up this month. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Wilbur Jones. He will be missed by everyone that had the pleasure of knowing him.

Mother's Day in the United States is an annual holiday celebrated on the second
Sunday in May. Mother's Day recognizes mothers, motherhood and maternal bonds
in general, as well as the positive contributions that they make to society. Although
many Mother's Day celebrations world-wide have quite different origins and
traditions, most have now been influenced by the more recent American tradition
established by Anna Jarvis, who campaigned for the holiday. Organized by Jarvis,
the first official Mother's Day was celebrated at St Andrew's Methodist Church
in Grafton, West Virginia, which now holds the International Mother's Day Shrine.
Previous attempts at establishing Mother's Day in the United States sought to
promote peace by means of honoring mothers who had lost or were at risk of losing
their sons to war.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU
by Doris Hoover
Melvin E. Dernberger, Jr. is a true Delawarean. Born and raised in
Milford on February 6, 1944. He vacations in Delaware and all his
relatives live in Delaware. He has a Harrington address, a Milford
telephone number, and the Houston Fire Department. His father,
Melvin Sr was a truck driver, mother Grace worked at Kraft Foods
and two brothers, one deceased and one brother living in Camden.
Mel and his wife, Marilyn, met on a blind date at the local bowling alley and married three months
later. They attend the Methodist Church in Houston, DE, have one son and one granddaughter
living in Greenwood, DE. Mel retired from Playtex Company in Dover after 38 years employment.
He was an ardent bowler and loved to play tennis but today spends his leisure playing cards,
billiards, and Ping Pong. His favorites are the color blue, Red Lobster for the shrimp menu, and all
Arnold Schwarzenegger Movies. Every Thursday he enjoys breakfast at the West Side Diner in
Milford. He vacations with relatives in Delaware every year. Fenwick Isle is a favorite retreat
during July with eight family kin and August is reserved for twenty relatives in an Ocean View
resort. Mel says “I like the people in FSC” and he in turn is well liked by the people in FSC. He is
serving his first year on the Board of Directors, is a faithful volunteer, and always willing to be of
assistance when needed. Mel is superbly cheerful, always has a greeting for everyone, and
extremely helpful with member’s needs. Give a hearty handshake and big smile when you get
together during activities or lunch.
Have you noticed someone new in the kitchen? We are
happy to introduce our new kitchen assistant,
Mercedes Farmer. Yes this is Barbara’s daughter. Please
take time to introduce yourself and make her feel
welcome.

Armed Forces Day is May 16, 2015; so thank a Veteran for the
freedoms we all cherish
I used to think that people didn't need their moms so much after they grew up. But I've realized that's not true. So often, when I'm making a decision, I wish you were here so I could ask your advice. And so many times, when something happens that I know you would enjoy. In Memory of Janet Smith. Renee

FREDERICA SENIOR CENTER PRESENTS:
14
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff, Board members, volunteers and our members, for helping
the center grow. It is your dedication that that make our growth possible! As we spring into spring, I am actively
seeking funding for the centers expansion. The expansion will enable the center to add on to the back of the building,
the new addition will house our exercise room, two bathrooms with showers, recreational area, ping pong room,
billiards room. This will then enable the center to expand the dining room, and have much needed storage space.
The cost for the expansion will be approximately $85,000.00. While I am applying for grants, and reaching out in the
community. You too can assist, a donation for building expansion jar is at the front desk. Any donation can help. You
can make a difference in a senior’s life.
Thank-you All
Very Much!

The Frederica Senior Center’s mission is to guide Delaware’s senior into a brighter future. The Center is where seniors
and or persons with disabilities join together for services, activities, socialization and nutritious home cooked meals.
Programs are designed to enhance our seniors dignity, support their independence and encourage involvement in and
with the Center and their local community.
This Membership Guidelines Booklet has been developed to enhance the experience of your participation in the Center
activities and programs. It is the Center’s priority to provide a safe, pleasant, positive, comfortable, enjoyable environ-
ment to our members.
The Center recognizes that some behaviors may distract and disrupt for the enjoyment of the Center. That is why the
following guidelines have been set up by the Board of Directors and Staff Members in order to address any instances
that may occur and disrupt the daily routine and experience at the Center.
We all ask that you carefully read this booklet to become familiar with these guidelines in order to know what is ex-
pected from each and every member of the Frederica Senior Center.
1. Membership is limited by the resources of the Center to individuals who are self mobile, with or without assistance
devices such as wheelchairs or walkers, independent, capable of appropriate decision making, self toileting and have
adequate appearance and hygiene to participate in daily activities. If not independent self mobile members may attend
with a personal assistant.
2. As a member we ask that you promote goodwill. No member shall mistreat, either verbally or physically, any other
member or staff. Mistreatment includes sexual, racial or otherwise harassing comments. Violence of any kind will not
be tolerated and shall result in immediate dismissal from the Center, and membership will be revoked immediately.
3. Members are asked to encourage diversity. Isolation of members based on race, religion, color, sex, national origin,
sexual orientation, and or physical or mental disability shall not be tolerated.
4. The use of illegal drugs or alcohol is not permitted on or in Center property.
5. The rooms and equipment in the Center are for the use of the entire membership and are never for the exclusive use
of any one member. Members are expected to respect and maintain the facility and equipment they use. Members may
be liable for purposeful damage or destruction of any Center property. Use of equipment is at the users own risk.
6. Members are not to use any vulgar or profane language at any time.
7. If at any time a member has a problem of some kind, whether it be with another member, staff member, a program
or procedure in the Center, that member should report their concern to the Executive Director or Staff Member. No
member has the right to approach a guest or group of guests to voice their complaint. Complaining among other mem-
bers will not get the situation resolved but will only bring disharmony into the Center.
8. Any criminal act committed by a member will result in immediate dismissal.
9. Inoculations must not be done in public areas, such as dining room, lobby or kitchen.
The purpose of these guidelines is to allow everyone to richly enjoy their visit to the Center every time they are here.
It is up to each individual member to do their part in order to achieve this goal.
PLEASE DO YOUR PART!
