The Monthly Newsletter of Pilgrim
Lutheran Church 3901 First Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55409 (612) 825-5375
From the Desk of Pastor Pete
Our Future
On May 22, five of our young people at Pilgrim will give an answer to this question: ―Do you
intend to continue steadfast in this teaching (the teaching of the Word of God) and to endure all things,
even death, rather than fall away from it?‖
God willing, they’ll answer this way: ―I do, and I ask God to help me.‖
It’s quite a question, right? We’re asking these young people to be willing to suffer death, if necessary,
rather than give up the gospel of Jesus Christ. These young people will need our prayers and
encouragement in the days to come. Lots of things will happen to them, things that many of us have
already experienced: high school, college, jobs, marriage and so on. Our combined experience and
wisdom can be a great source of encouragement for these young people as they face new challenges in
life.

Please, take the time to meet and talk with our young people at Pilgrim. You have a lot to offer them.
Let them know how glad you are to hear them make their vows on confirmation day. Offer to pray for
them. Tell them what your faith has meant to you over the years.
Just as you are a blessing to these young people, they are a blessing to you. Their young faith, their
optimism and energy serve as an encouragement to the church. Through them the Lord lets us know
that he intends for his church to have a future.
Young or old, the sacrifice of Christ on the cross and his triumphant resurrection unite as the body of
Christ. Each of us have different personalities, gifts and abilities, but Christ unites us into one body.
And as one body we live to glorify our Lord and Savior.
Don’t miss May 22—confirmation Sunday! Hear the testimonies of your young brothers and sisters in
Christ. Rejoice with them and rejoice that the Lord continues to bless his church.
The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one
body. So it is with Christ. For we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or
free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
Paul (1 Corinthians 12:12-13)
CONFIRMATION
On May 22 we’ll celebrate the rite of confirmation at Pilgrim.
As usual, we’ll have events at both the 8:30 and 10:30 service. At 8:30 the confirmands will share their
testimonies: each of them will present a prepared answer to a question that they’ve been given.
At 10:30 the confirmands will present the Scripture verses that they’ve chosen for one another. In that
service we will also have the rite of confirmation in which the students promise to remain faithful to
their Lord and are formally received into the membership of our congregation.
Join us in celebrating God’s gifts to his church!

LOST AND FOUND
Lost and found items are in a basket by the tracts in the narthex (1st Avenue entrance) of the church.
Call the church office at 612-825-5375 to inquire about lost and found items.
Lock doors and turn off lights
Pilgrim Church highly encourages the use of our facilities by groups: Pioneers, Ladies Guild, Bible
Study, etc. We ask for each group, upon leaving, to verify all lights are turned off and doors are
shut tight. Doors need to be checked by pulling on them as they may not lock unless forced shut.
Numerous times staff members have arrived to find the doors not locked and lights left on. Not
checking the doors puts our property in danger of vandalism, theft and a host of other issues.
Leaving lights on causes additional funds to be sent to Xcel Energy that could have been used to
spread the Gospel.
PRAY FOR OUR TROOPS
Please pray for the United States military and the following enlisted and/or deployed service men
and women: Paul Bandelin, Jacob and Errol Belanger, Thomas Bonde, Justin Brandt, Samuel
Hass, Brent Hassler, Jennifer James, Andrew Leyrer, Nicholas Neumann, Andrew Rolston,
Cory Williams, Isaac Wold, John Wolter, and John Zimmerman.
PRAYER REQUESTS FOR OUR MEMBERS
People to pray for (Please call the church office if you would like a name added to this list.) Mike Anderson, Ardelle Bloedel, Thomas Bonde, Mattie Dahl, Michael Dieter, Brian Florin, Elmer
Janisch, Joy Kilber, Jean Loescher, Rozetta Norman, and Pilgrim shut-ins.

Stewardship Verse of the Month for May
Spring is a time for optimism and high hopes. After a long, cold winter our world is becoming soft
and welcoming again. However, this month's verse must have been written in winter. Listen to its
negativity;
Ecclesiastes 5:10 Whoever loves money never has money enough: whoever loves
wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless.
Solomon was surely at a low point in his life when he wrote these words. He calls so much of his
life "meaningless." We can argue this point as we will, but what he says is truly true. Can anyone ever
say he has money enough? Do you know anyone who is not trying to get more money? It is a trick of
the Devil to get us to chase wealth and neglect our spiritual condition. St. Paul told us last month that
this trick has worked for thousands of years. But not here at Pilgrim!! We have been studying all this
year what God says about money, and nothing that God says is meaningless.

that decision. A 10% annual tithe broken down to weekly giving amounts

$5,000 $500 $9.75
$10,000 $1,000 $19.50
$15,000 $1,500 $25.00

$25,000 $2,500 $48.50
$50,000 $5,000 $97.00

Why Go To Church?
A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go
to church every Sunday... "I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in that time I have heard
something like=203,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I
think I'm wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all."
This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column, much to the delight of the editor.
It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher:
"I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the
life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this... They all
nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these
meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would
be spiritually dead today!"
When you are DOWN to nothing... God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the
incredible and receives the impossible! Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment!
