MAURITIUS BILLFISH RELEASE COMPETITION
The Mauritius Billfish Release International Tournament is taking
place in Black River, in late January during the peak of the marlin
season. Situated on the west coast of the Island, sheltered from the
prevailing trade winds, Black River is the perfect place for unforgetta-
ble deep-sea fishing experiences.

THAIPOOSAM CAVADEE
Cavadee is among the most spectacular Tamil events. The body
pierced with needles and the tongue and cheeks with skewers. The
devotee, trance-like and in penance, walks in procession to the tem-
ple bearing the "Cavadee”.

ABOLITION OF SLAVERY
Slavery was abolished on the island in 1835 by the British, following
the vote of the Slavery Abolition Act in 1833 by the British Parliament.
Each year, to celebrate the abolition of slavery, concerts and com-
memorative events are organized throughout the island, especially at
Le Morne, a symbolic place, which was the refuge of many runaway
slaves

MAHA SHIVARATREE

Maha Shivratree is celebrated in honour of Hindu God, Siva. Hindu
devotees, clad in spotless white, carry the "kanwar" - wooden arches
covered with flowers – on pilgrimage to Grand Bassin, to fetch holy
water from the lake.

CHINESE SPRING FESTIVAL (NEW YEAR)
The Spring Festival, which is the Chinese New Year, is celebrated in
January/February, depending on the adjustment of lunar days. Food
is piled up to ensure abundance during the year and the traditional
wax cake is distributed to relatives and friends. Firecrackers are lit to
ward off evil spirits. Gala Show with local and artists from People’s
Republic of China

DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL
MAY 2018
Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated t o commemorate Qu Yuan (340 –
278 BC) an ancient patriotic poet. In Mauritius a dragon boat race
competition is organised where about 8 – 10 teams of 25 participants
usually participate. Rodrigues and Reunion Island are invited to take
part in the dragon boat race competition.

TROPICADINGUE
Combining features of trail running and multisport racing, the Tropi-
ca'Dingue at Mon Trésor is THE wackiest and most fun-packed of all
sporting challenges to have hit the shores of Mauritius. This unique

off-road race of almost 10 km, with twenty-two original obstacles in-

BAL DU BON VIEUX TEMPS
Bal Du Bon Vieux Temps has once been a wide type of social danc-

EID-UL-FITR
Eid-ul-Fitr is the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal. It marks
the end of Ramadan, which is a month of fasting and prayer. Many
Muslims attend prayers during Eid-ul-Fitr. They are dressed in fine
clothing and children receive gifts on that occasion.

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated during the August / September. It
marks the birthday of Ganesha, the God of wisdom and remover of all
obstacles according to Hindu mythology. The event ends with the
Ganesh Visarjan whereby devotees immerse idol of Lord Ganesh in
water body after a gala street procession.

PERE LAVAL PELGRIMAGE
Every year on 8 September, men, women and children from every
part of the island, leave their houses and start on a long march to the
shrine of Father Jacques Désiré Laval at Sainte Croix, where prayers
are said. The death of Père Laval is commemorated on the 9 Sep-
tember.

DEUTSCHE BANK 100KM CYCLE TOUR
OCTOBER 2018
Since 2004, the Deutsche Bank 100km Cycle Tour is one of the an-
nual rendez-vous on the Mauritian sports calendar. Besides being a
sport challenge, this cycle race invites participants to ride for a cause.
Each year, part of the entry fees is remitted to local NGOs to support
their laudable work for the embetterment of the Mauritian society

DIVALI CELEBRATION
Divali is the most jovial of all Hindu festivals. Celebrated in Novem-
ber, it marks the victory of righteousness over evil in the Hindu my-
thology. Traditionally, clay oil lamps were placed in front of every
home turning the island into a fairyland of flickering lights; these have
now been replaced mostly by decorative electric lights.

FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL KREOL
Like every year the FIK (Festival Morisien) will be organised by the
Ministry of Tourism, MTPA and partners such as Ministry of Arts and
Culture at the end of November. The Festival is organised during a
week with competitions, live concerts, cultural events and other activi-
ties around the “Kreol” theme. This festival target the Mauritius popu-
lation at large and is mediatized internationally.
