During the late 1790s Flinders sailed to Australia and established himself as a first class navigator.Matthew Flinders was one of the most successful navigators for his age.Flinders put aside the thought of being a surgeon like his father and successfully became a member in the Royal Navy when he was only at the age of 15. He entered the Royal Navy on the 23rd of October 1789.He sailed 18,000 kilometres around where he sailed. Matthew Flinders surveyed the Australian Coastline in his ship the ‘Investergator’.

Matthew Flinders carried out several important and daring voyages, discovering the coastal portions. Matthew’s career spanned just over twenty years. Matthew Flinders sailed with George Bass and Captain William Bligh. Matthew Flinders arrived at Port Phillip Bay on the 27th of April 1802. He sailed the whole bay including the Geelong area. We are believing he was the first to see the sight of a huge expanse of water, but in a rush to reach Sydney before winter which he scheduled very well, he left Port Phillip Bay on the 3rd of May. Matthew Flinders was and still is a very well-known explorer.
