MATHS- ARITHMETIC Addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division.
ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION
For addition and subtraction we always use column method
(Unless we can easily spot a number bond)
Make a list of all your number bonds to 10 to help you out.
Don’t forget addition and subtraction go hand-in-hand. Subtraction is the inverse of addition.
This means you can check your answers by doing the opposite.
For example, 23+14= 37 37-14= 23

PUZZLES AND PROBLEM SOLVING

Have a look on nrich and see if you can solve any of the problems! There are lots of KS2 Addition and Subtraction problems.
MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION
MULTIPLICATION
In Year 5, we need to be able to multiply two digit numbers by four digit numbers.
Practise multiplying two digits by two digits first and work your way up!
If you are finding it too tricky, start off by multiplying by one digit. The key to this is knowing your times tables. Use TTRockstars to help.
Multiplying by one digit: https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/year-3-diving-into-mastery-multiply-2-digits-by-1-digit-1-teaching-pack-t-m-30562
PRACTISE
The easiest way to come up with new questions is to use a dice
(or virtual dice https://www.random.org/dice/)
Simply roll the dice and write the numbers. Multiply them. Use a calculator to check your answers.
44 x 61
MULTIPLYING TWO DIGITS BY TWO DIGITS
Remember our little chant:
Ones x Ones
Ones x Tens
MAGIC ZERO
Tens x Ones
Tens x Tens
ADD THEM UP
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkUUNo90eSE
The chant comes from our
understanding of place value.
(Parents – ones were previously
known as units – it is the same
thing!)
We have had lots of practise
with this in class – so hopefully
you can remember!
Use a calculator to check your
answer.

MULTIPLYING TWO DIGITS BY THREE DIGITSIt is the same method again. But the chant is a little different. Can you work out how? We need to multiply the digit in the hundreds too!
Ones x Ones
Ones x Tens
Ones x Hundreds
MAGIC ZERO
Tens x Ones
Tens x Tens
Tens x Hundreds
ADD THEM UP

MULTIPLYING TWO DIGITS BY FOUR DIGITS The final step – this is the end goal so don’t worry if you find it a little trickier!
I bet you can all do it though! (Growth Mindset guys!) Ones x Ones
Ones x Tens
Ones x Hundreds
Ones x Thousands
MAGIC ZERO
Tens x Ones
Tens x Tens
Tens x Hundreds
Tens x Thousands
ADD THEM UP

You will spot here that you can find these questions
in the Year 6 SATS! How amazing that you are already
ready for this Worth two marks too BUZZING!

Extra GD Challenge:
Can you work out how to multiply a three digit number by a three digit number?
How would the chant change?
How many Magic Zeros would be needed?
Investigate.
DIVISION
DIVISION
Division is the inverse of multiplication. Again, it is really important to know your times tables. If you are not confident with them you will find it much harder.
The formal method of division is the bus stop method.
