Dear Parents/Carers and Friends of Marymount College

At the end of this week we draw to a close Semester 1 of the school year. In reflecting over

the year so far, I am continually inspired and rejuvenated by the community we are, the

learning we offer, our commitment to wellbeing and our roots as a school in the Good

Samaritan tradition. This is only possible because of the people who are part of the

Marymount community. A daily commitment to providing excellence in teaching and learning

in an environment that nurtures deep learning, wellbeing and faith is the hallmark of

Marymount College. Professional learning that is aligned with the strategic intent of the

College is foundational for continual improvement. This semester our work in Restorative

Practices has created a solid platform for identity and practice to marry. Our learning

partnership with Flinders University continues to develop deep content knowledge in

numeracy. The professional learning workshops led by Dr David Moltow from University of

Tasmania in collaboration with Dr Virginia Kinnear have provoked profound consideration to

the deliberate naming of Intellectual Virtues as part of teaching and learning. Alice Dunlop

has worked on an eco-spirituality project with staff and students and this work will continue

through Mel Carey and Laura Parsons into the second half of the year.

I wish to acknowledge and thank you for the positive messages you and current students

their drive towards offering families excellent Catholic Education in SA.

At the end of this week, mid year school reports will be distributed. These reports form part

of the required reporting processes under the Schools Assistance Act (2008). I encourage all

parents/carers to make a special time with your daughter to view and discuss her report.

This is also a good time to chat with your daughter about how she views her progress and

welcoming Leticia Andrusiak and Kat Elliott. We wish Sister Loyola well as she takes time away to

rest, travel and support friends and colleagues over the next 6 weeks. Sister Loyola is a familiar face

to our College, as she volunteers support across the Year 6 team. I take this opportunity to thank her

for her ongoing contributions to the College and the assistance she provides.

I wish all students and families a restful and rejuvenating break from school routines over the

David Ruggerio, [email protected]

I have thoroughly enjoyed my first week at Marymount College. I have spent many years in

Catholic Education, in a variety of leadership roles at numerous schools, including: Thomas

More College, St Columba College, St Paul’s College, Christian Brothers’ College and

Blackfriars. The community at Marymount has been exceptionally welcoming and this is

testimony to the parents, students and staff who are part of the Marymount family. I look

forward to my time here and hope to meet as many of you as possible.

“Little girl, get up!” Over almost 20 years in education I have witnessed the desperate lengths walked and

sacrifices made by parents for their children. As an educator we are committed to working

with parents to ensure the best outcomes for their children. This partnership allows children

to reach their true God given potential.

This week’s Gospel is from the evangelist Mark. The story fits into a series of miracle stories

of Jesus, where Jesus displays power over demons, nature, sickness and death. Jairus, a

synagogue leader, pleads with Jesus to save his 12 year old daughter who is at the point of

death. During his plea, Jairus is confronted with the devastating news that his daughter is

dead. Jesus interrupts and reassures Jairus with the words, “Do not fear, only believe.” As

Jesus enters the house he is met with the commotion of the situation, wailing, weeping and

hopelessness. Jesus questions their attitude and the crowd respond with ridicule. Jesus

ignores the ridicule and takes the little girl by the hand and says to her, “Talitha cum”, which

means, “Little girl, get up!” Shock and amazement befalls the crowd as she gets up and is

restored to life. Jesus pragmatically follows up with the order to give her something to eat.

As a Catholic college for girls, we are charged with the mission to ensure our girls, “get up”

and live life to the full. There may be times in a girl’s life when a situation may appear beyond

repair. There may be strained relationships, damaging behaviours, mediocre academic results,

challenging personal trials or worrisome medical issues. In these situations, we as a college

community work with parents, in the faith of Jesus and the charism of the Good Samaritan

Sisters. We enter the situation with the courage to never give up, despite the ridicule we may

encounter, so as to ensure every girl can ‘get up’ and be restored to reach her full potential.

Jesus’ last command, to give her something to eat, mirrors the pragmatic approach of the

Good Samaritan story. We must meet people where they are and tend to their immediate

needs and wounds. Wellbeing involves first ministering to the wounds surrounding the issue

and then ensuring plans are in place for the long term restoration to a new way of living. This

can be an extensive and arduous process which ebbs and flows, but a Catholic school can

never give up. We are challenged to have faith and not be afraid of the crowd’s opinion, but

instead see the child as being close to the mystery of God; in need of restoration to a path

that leads to life, because this is what Jesus demands of us.

I wish to leave you with some practical wellbeing tips you can try with your daughter over the

break. Firstly, mindfulness is an art form which is thankfully gaining prominence in our busy western

world. We need to encourage our children to become mindful and spend time in meditation and

prayer so as to slow down the chaos. Secondly, gratitude is a key component to a positive mind.

Spend some time in nature; be grateful for a sunset, thankful for wildlife, appreciative of the rain.

Thirdly, eat well and exercise regularly, allow the body to move and feel alive. Finally, build strong

relationships that endure by making the time to be truly present to each other. These are the basic

building blocks of Positive Psychology; obvious, simple but all too often ignored!

For a practical beginning, click here to see Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls website (recommend by

psychologist Steve Biddulph) on dealing with emotions and mindfulness.

Blessings and peace for the school holidays.

What a fabulous semester we have had, with many learning opportunities and highlights for

your daughter to be a part of. It is exciting to be a part of such a vibrant Community with

great evidence of support from students, staff, parents and parish. Please start making plans

for creating a table for the upcoming quiz night early next term, the energetic Parent Rep

group has been working hard to ensure a fun night will be had by all. Thanks for the

response so far for prizes, please keep them coming in next term.

questions, do not hesitate to contact the APRIM or Julie Thomas [email protected].

CIA Last weekend the current and some of last year’s CIA girls, helped serve lunch to 150 people

at the Brighton Parish lunch, which celebrated its 50th year. They were very hospitable in the

way they conducted themselves and represented Marymount College. The mostly elderly

parishioners really enjoyed their presence. I congratulate these girls for their involvement!

Mary Statue to be Replaced When the Mary statue was transported from Seacombe Gardens to Hove, the grotto could

not be moved. This protected Mary and unfortunately she has slowly deteriorated from

being exposed to the weather. In discussion with the Good Samaritan sisters, the state Mary

is in at the moment is undignified and beyond repair and it was suggested she be replaced.

We thought our 60th Anniversary celebration next year 2016, was a significant occasion to

work towards this final installation and unveiling. In the coming months we will respectfully

dismantle this area in consultation with the Good Samaritan sisters and the Brighton Parish,

in preparation for a new interpretation of Mary by Gerry McMahon, the artist who has

worked with the community before in creating sculptures.

Farewell and Happy Holidays! Finally, this is my last newsletter until I return back to Marymount next year as I have leave

for the remainder of 2015. I wish you all the very best for your family and your daughter’s

for the rest of the year. I wish the students all a well-deserved break for the school holidays

to rejuvenate energy and to give them the opportunities to catch up on things that you do

not always have the time to do when at school. If you have any queries regarding the

Religious dimension of Marymount do not hesitate to contact Liz Stewart who will be the

acting APRIM in my absence.

AUSLAN is Australian Sign Language and is the cultural language of the deaf community in

Australia. Learning this visual language can be fun and it makes communication between the

hearing and deaf much easier. Being friends with a deaf person brings great opportunities to

learn the language, which can be very useful for the future and it is very much the same as

learning another language. Chelsea from CanDo4Kids has been coming in to teach students

AUSLAN to communicate with the deaf and the customs of the deaf culture. It is now

becoming a very popular language to learn in today's society. Learning the language has

helped me to understand what it is like for the deaf and how we can help them to be

involved in conversation.

In Term 2, the Year 8's have been participating in dance during PE with an instructor named

Bec. Bec has taught us some new styles of dance and some cool moves. At the start of the

lesson we do a warm up dance where we copy what she is doing to get in the mood of

dancing. Then she teaches us some styles of dance, show us the moves and then we put it to

music. In one of the lessons we got to go into small groups and make up a short 30 second

dance. We got to show these to the rest of the class on the stage, which was really fun. We

are learning through dance how to stay fit and healthy!

By Abby and Georgia

Our class has been enjoying the introduction of circle time. This is a time for everyone to

relax and express their opinions to the class. It is also a time to reflect on what we have been

doing throughout the terms learning subjects. Each circle time starts with a theme focussing

on a topic such as positive relationships. We then participate in a series of activities and

discussions relating to this topic. It gives everyone a chance to have a voice and also helps

builds the relationships within our class.

By Mia

All the Year 8 classes cooked soup for the St Vincent de Paul Society, Fred's Van to help and

feed the less fortunate that are living on the streets of Adelaide. We did this because not

every homeless person is homeless because they want to be and every person has the right

to a regular meal and shelter. Each class chose a different type of soup, so we could provide

a variety. The Year 8 teachers delivered them to the centre at Christies Beach, so they could

be distributed to the homeless.

Handprints By Charlotte

This term we added our handprints to the poles in the Year 8 garden. I felt really happy

about this, as it’s going to be there for a very long time. Leaving a mark on something is

really important in my perspective, so in the future you can look back and see what you did

and how far you’ve come. I like how each one tells a sort of story behind it. Each handprint

was made by someone going through their life, making their marks and at this moment they

are somewhere else as they have left this school. I really like the thought that people have

moved on through their lives and we are at the stage in life, where they were a few years

ago and we are still to go through many other things.

Handprints By Emily

This term when we placed our handprints on the posts in the Year 8 garden, I felt very

positive and excited about doing this. I believe that doing this bought all of us together as a

year level. Putting handprints on the posts makes our mark at Marymount and brought a

sense of belonging to our school. I believe this is a fantastic idea and it should not stop.

During Science this term, we have been learning about the different body systems. So far we

have learnt about the digestive, respiratory, and cardiovascular systems. To help us

understand all three systems further, we dissected a heart and a pluck (lungs, heart, trachea,

and bronchus.)

When we first saw the hearts it seemed rather gross and disgusting. During the practical, we

had to describe the appearance of the heart, identify the four main vessels, four chambers

and the valves. At first, the idea of dissecting a heart was revolting but when we started to

dissect it, it wasn't as bad. There was a few difficulties with the first cut as many students slit

in the wrong place. Luckily there was enough hearts for a few people to have another go.

We also looked at some of the organs of the respiratory system. This included the trachea and

the lungs. When Mr Jones blew through a tube, the oxygen entered via the trachea into the

lungs. When the oxygen entered the lungs, the lungs expanded more than twice their original size!

This was a new experience for most students. We found it very fascinating and interesting, but

also fun. This practical helped us understand the process of blood entering the veins and arteries,

and making its way through the heart and why the heart is so important for us to survive.

This year the Uniform Committee was re-formed to look at a couple of items. This

committee consisted of Dennis McEvoy, the School Captain and Vice Captain, a Year 8

parent and Leone Coorey. As a result of the work of the committee, the following

recommendations regarding the uniform were recently approved by the School Board. It

relates to a new school hat, use of SHC socks and improved sport shorts. Some of the

impetus for looking at these items came from the students when the Uniform Policy was

reviewed this year. The Uniform Committee recommends:

The deluxe bucket hat (navy) is adopted and include the Marymount logo at the front of

the hat. The phase in period will be: by 2019 all students will wear the new hat. This will

enable the current Year 6 students to wear their present hat throughout their time at

Marymount. The period of 2015-2018 will be a transition period when the old and new

hat will be worn by students.

The SHC socks are to become part of the Marymount Uniform and can be worn with both

the winter and summer uniform. The phase in period will be: families can begin to buy the

SHC socks immediately, however, by 2017 all students are to be wearing the SHC socks.

The sports shorts will have a different fabric and will be a little longer in length. The phase

in period will be: families can begin to buy these shorts immediately, however, by 2018 all

students are to be wearing the new shorts.
