Mary Tudor
Bloody Mary
(1516-1558)
Mary Tudor was born on February18th,1516 at Greenwich Palace in London.
Early Years
Mary’s parents were Henry Vlll and
Katherine of Aragon. In 1552 Henry
arranged that Mary was to be married to
Charles V, a holy Roman Emperor but in
1525 Charles broke off the engagement
and married Princess Isabella of
Portugal.In the same year Henry sent Mary to
live in Wales.
The Princess of Wales
For the next year and a half Ludlow castle
was to be Mary’s home in Wales. Mary
was the centre of her own imposing court
representing the King. In 1527 Mary
arrived home and celebrated her
engagement to the son of the King of
France.
Change of Family
Henrys attitude towards Mary and her
mother had changed,he realised that his
marriage to Katherine had been
disapproved of by God. He was planning
on getting married to his second wife
Anne Boleyn.
Problems with the Pope
Henry wished to divorce Katherine but heNeeded permission off the pope. In 1531Katherine was sent to Kimbolten castleand was made a prisoner there. Henryrealized that the pope would never agreewith his divorce so Henry broke awayfrom the church of Rome. He thenestablished his own church of which hewas the head.
Mary As Queen
Upon the death of Edward in 1553 Mary became Queen.She longed to bring her people back to the church of Rome. To achieve this end she married Phillip II of Spain.Mary murdered hundreds of protestants, this is how she got the nickname ‘Bloody Mary’.She died in 1558 in London and with her died all that she did.
