In April we bid farewell to Caroline Lower, the Martlets Chief Executive, at a party held at the hospice. Michael Edwards, Chairman of the Trustees, thanked Caroline for her immense contribution. He reminded guests that Caroline had been its much admired leading light ever since the hospice began caring for patients in 1997. Before that she had worked for Coppercliff Hospice which merged with Tarner Home to create the Martlets. During her time at the Martlets, Caroline had launched many innovative approaches: she established Hospice at Home; the Martlets Care Agency; close collaborative working with health sector partners; and had

WelcomeI’m pleased to say that this newsletter has lots of good news stories for you to enjoy. Once again we’ve been chosen as one of the Mayor of Brighton & Hove’s charities along with the Argus Appeal and Brighton Housing Trust, take your pick from a host of Mayor’s Charity events on p6.

Building work finished this spring on our Day Services rooms and it’s wonderful to see patients and carers enjoying our new range of services. You can find out what we’re offering on p9. Keep an eye on our website though, we’ve just secured funding for a pamper suite that will mean patients can enjoy some ‘me’ time in a relaxing, supportive environment.

We have recently reported our best ever legacies income year which has meant that we have been able to replenish our reserves and invest in our Respite Service. Our reserves were depleted during the tough financial years we’ve had recently, so much so that they would only have kept us running for 3 months. Our aspiration is for 12 months running costs cover in reserves and we now have 6 months. We’re very grateful to all our supporters who remember the Hospice in their Wills, it’s thanks to them we can invest for the future.

Our Respite Service gives carers an

invaluable break and helps keep patients at home and there are a huge number of local families who need our support. Investing in the service means we’ve been able to care for up to 10 new patients a week and increase the hours of care we can give by roughly 80 hours taking us to nearly 200 hours a week.

expanded the network of shops with the warehouse as well as the very successful weekly lottery and other fundraising ventures. Roger French, the ex-chairman of the Martlets, who worked with Caroline for many years, added his own reflections of Caroline, as someone whose “inspirational leadership will be much missed by all staff and hundreds of volunteers and supporters and especially patients and their families. “We all have much to thank her for. It was wonderful to work with such a highly skilled and competent Chief Executive during my nine years as chairman, who has the essential qualities of a warm personality and a kind heart.”

Saying Goodbye

Have you signed your Will yet? “Without a Will, you can’t control what will happen to your assets after you die and who should look after any young children. If you do have a Will then you should check whether it needs updating to reflect changed circumstances.

A homemade Will is not advised as mistakes are easily made and can take time and money to resolve after you have died. The best way to ensure your wishes are carried out is to consult a specialist solicitor who can also advise on minimising inheritance tax.”

Leumi staff proud to raise hospice funds

Local asset based lender, Leumi ABL Ltd, started supporting Martlets in 2009. Paul Hird, CEO and Alan Couzins, Operations Director, have both had loved ones cared for by the hospice so when choosing a local charity for Leumi to support, Martlets was a natural choice. Paul said “We’d both experienced first hand their amazing care for patients and just wanted to give something back.”

Since then, Leumi staff have fundraised with a vengeance, raising almost £40,000. Their annual Golf Day raised £7,000 this year and Alan has run the Brighton Marathon 3 times, joined in 2014 by colleague Mark Woolgar, and raising over £20,000 in total. There have also been intrepid cycle rides across

Europe, sweepstakes, a ‘mug’ auction, Christmas collections and involvement in our Midnight Walk.

Paul is proud of his colleagues’ enthusiasm to fundraise for the hospice. “Supporting such an important local charity is good for staff morale and team building and we’ve had great fun along the way. It’s reassuring to know that Leumi staff are raising money so that Martlets can continue to provide the excellent care our loved ones received. We know the money will be very well spent.”

Pedal in Preston Park – Saturday 25th October Enter online www.pedalinprestonpark.co.uk Pedal in Preston Park was created by the family and friends of Rachel Evans-Milne who died in 2009 from Motor Neurone Diease aged 44. They wanted to do something positive in her memory.

Alistair Milne, Rachel’s husband explained “Watching Rachel succumb to Motor Neurone Disease was a terrible experience for us. She was diagnosed with MND in the summer of 2007. Early on in her illness the Martlets Day Hospice supported her. Later on the Hospice at Home team visited our family home to care for her. It was thanks to the Hospice at Home team she was able to die at home with her family.”

“Our first Pedal was in October 2010, 200 people took part and it was an amazing experience that raised £18,000 for MNDA. We’ve raised over

£50,000 for our chosen charities in the last 4 years, everything we raise this year will be split fifty fifty between the MNDA and the Martlets. Our family has seen first-hand the work the Martlets do so it seems very natural for Pedal to support them.”

challenge. This year it’s to collectively cycle the distance of the UK mainland coastline, roughly 30,000 laps of the velodrome. I know it’s ambitious but if enough cyclists sign up I think we can do it.”

A marathon story

Jo-Jo Coppard is an inspiration for anyone who thinks they’ve left it too late to do a marathon. Jo-Jo, 71, power-walked her way around the 26-mile, Brighton course this year, finishing in just over six-and-a-half hours, cheered on every step of the way.

Jo-Jo raised more than £1,300 to fund the work of our nurses who were delighted to see her when she visited staff at the Hospice to present the cheque.

So, if you’ve been thinking about taking on a marathon why not make 2015 your year and be part of Team Martlets? This year’s event is on Sunday 12th April and we have 25 places available. We’re asking each of our runners to raise £500 & the Martlets team will support you all the way with expert fundraising hints and tips, training advice, and a free Martlets running vest. Donate your hats, handbags and heels Ladies it’s time to go through your wardrobe and dig out all those unwanted hats, handbags and heels for our new fabulous new event. Hats, Handbags and Heels is on 11th February at Sussex County Cricket Club. Whatever you can donate it will help raise much needed money for the Martlets.

Only Men Allowed (and boys too!) on Sunday 19th October A sponsored walk for men and boys along the Sussex coastline, lads and their Dads are very welcome! It’s a 13 mile challenge on Sunday 19th October starting at the Sussex County Cricket Ground.

Hundreds of local women take up the midnight walk challenge every year – we thought it was time the boys had their very own event.

You can choose from a 13 mile route or, if you’re feeling a bit less energetic, we’ve organised a shorter route. Whatever challenge you go for make sure you ask friends and family to dig deep and sponsor you, every penny you raise will go towards patient care at the Martlets.

Hospice at home Caring for patients at home

Harriet’s husband Malcolm was diagnosed with dementia in 2004, over the next few years his condition deteriorated so much that Harriet couldn’t leave him alone. But she was determined to care for her husband at home. This kind of story is one we often hear at the Martlets. Thanks to the support of our Care Agency, the Respite Service and the Hospice at Home team we are able to help carers like Harriet keep their loved ones at home where they want to be.

Harriet told us her story. “Malcolm had Alzheimer’s Disease

and at times exhibited behaviour which was difficult to handle. Martlets Care understood this and, where possible, provided carers who could cope with our situation. From their first visit I found them to be people I could welcome into my home. Most importantly they listened to me and worked with me - they genuinely seemed to care.”

“Around Easter time he began to decline and the Hospice at Home nurses got involved. They were very

supportive. Knowing that I could call them about any concern - for example, the procedures to follow if Malcolm died in the night - was invaluable.”

“Through the early stages of Malcolm’s illness I felt as though I had fight his corner for every bit of care and equipment. When the Martlets got involved things changed. They understood that I was totally committed and immersed in his care and matched that with the help and equipment that was needed. I feel exceptionally fortunate in having had access to the Martlets services - the Carers, the Respite and the Hospice at Home team.”

Congratulations Belinda and Graeme

It’s good to feel useful !

When Belinda and Graeme got married in May this year they knew they wanted to support the Martlets. It’s a cause close to Belinda’s heart as we cared for her dear friend Pat. Pat lost her battle with cancer three years ago. The couple wanted to remember her on their wedding day and decided to ask for donations to the Martlets instead of wedding gifts. They raised £940, that’s an incredible total and will help to pay for nearly seven days of Hospice at Home care. We’re like to thank the happy couple for choosing to support the Martlets on their special day. Angela volunteers on our In-Patient Unit reception once a week. She told us why she finds it a rewarding place to volunteer.

“At first I wasn’t sure if being a receptionist would really help support the nurses and the ward clerk. But after a few weeks I could see that I was saving them a lot time by helping with admin. It’s important to me to know that this is a useful role. One of the things I enjoy most about volunteering here is feeling part of a team. Everyone’s so friendly here I’d definitely recommend it! “

We’re looking for more reception volunteers on the In-Patient Unit and we also have exciting new volunteer roles within Martlets Day Services.

To support the development of our new services we’re looking for volunteer admin assistants and event co-ordinators. You’ll need to have good computer skills – be happy using Word and Excel, enjoy meeting new people and be a natural organiser. To make

sure everyone can use our Day Services we want to be able to offer transport so we’re looking for volunteer drivers. You’ll need to have use of your own car for this role.

NEW - Martlets House Clearance In response to popular demand we now offer a house clearance service. Choosing the Martlets means you’re safe in the knowledge that not only will we leave your property empty but it will also be spotless. And you’ll be supporting your favourite local charity!

Clearing an entire house can be a daunting task, let alone working out how to dispose of everything correctly. Our House Clearance team are here to help, they’re experts at knowing what goes where. Anything that can be sold and reused will find its way into one of the Martlets shops, where it will raise money for the Martlets. If it can’t be sold or reused it will be recycled or legally disposed of.

All the money raised from Martlets House Clearance will go towards patient care at the Martlets.

Our big Brighton shopping extravaganza needs youThis autumn we will be opening a big new shop in central Brighton and half the shop will be filled with vintage gems.. There’s lots of room to stock retro furniture, clothes, jewellery, accessories, crockery and linens. The other half of the shop will be Student Central. Stocking everything Brighton’s students need to furnish their new homes. The shop will open seven days a week, daytime through to early evening and we’re looking

for volunteers to help run it. Longer opening hours mean there are lots of different volunteer shifts available to fit around you. It goes without saying we’ll supply the tea and biscuits; you’ll be fully trained and well supported by our friendly shops team. Light up a life ceremonies are a wonderful series of events just before Christmas where supporters remember loved ones. Many people come because they were supported by care from the Martlets.

That’s why Ade and his family came to Light up a Life last year; we cared for his late wife Eira on the In-Patient Unit. Staying on the In-Patient Unit for the last few weeks of her life meant her family could be with her, for as long as they needed to be. They could stay the night and visit whenever they wanted.

We asked Ade why he and his daughters chose to support the Martlets.

“It is very difficult to put into words how important and special the Martlets is to us.

They gave so much love and care to my family. Not just in the excellent care given to Eira who was so grateful that the Martlets were there for her. Our children and myself also received so much support - the Martlets made it possible for us to stay with Eira in the final weeks of her life.

After losing Eira we continued to receive invaluable support from the bereavement service, which made such a difference in helping us cope with the devastating loss.

So for us the Martlets will remain a very special and important place.”

Remembrance at the Martlets

The events focus on remembrance, with readings, carol singing and refreshments afterwards. You might find it comforting to join others who have been through a similar experience of loss and bereavement.

We ask you to make a donation with your dedication – whatever you can give will help us continue to care for future patients and their families. Your donation will help our patients throughout the year, not just at Christmas.
