sOTOLOGY JUBILEE: 150 Years of the Archiv für OhrenheilkundePast-Present-Future in Otology & Neurotology

One hundred fifty years ago, Hermann Schwartze in Halle, Adam Politzer in Vienna, and Anton von Tröltsch in Würzburg jointly founded the Archiv für Ohrenheilkunde (“Archive of Otology”), as the world‘s first journal solely devoted to otology. Today, the journal is published as the “European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology”.

The conference celebrates this jubilee of our specialty with a program consisting of oral and poster contributions on the history, the state of the art and the future directions of otology and neurotology, under the motto:

“Where do we come from? – Where are we? - Where are we going?”

It is the aim of the conference to look back and acknowledge the endeavors and successes of our academic predecessors but also to point out meanders in basic and clinical science, diagnostics and therapy. We want to proudly emphasize the amazing developments in understanding the physiology and pathophysiology of the intact and the diseased organ, in diagnostic technology and surgical techniques including passive and active implants for restoring hearing, which all have completely changed our field in the last 150 years. We want to discuss which otological and neurootological questions and problems have been solved during the last 150 years and which are still unsolved issues in different parts of the world. Finally, we want to increase interest in the fascinating history of otology and neurotology and catch a glimpse of what we may expect in the future of our specialty.

On behalf of all organizers I welcome you in Halle

Main building of the Leopoldina

Ball room Stairway

German National Academy of Science „Leopoldina“ in Halle/Saale, GermanyThe conference will be held in the headquarter

of the German National Academy of Science.

Founded in 1652 in Schweinfurt, Leopoldina is the world’s oldest continuously existing academy for medicine and the natural sciences. It is the first and foremost academic society in Germany to advise the German government on a variety of scientific matters.

The building’s architecture reflects its fascinating history. It incorporates different architectural styles that testify to the changing zeitgeist and its previous owners’ ambition and desire to impress. Two examples of the repeated restructuring and expansion projects are the conversion of the west wing into a banquet room in 1867 and the extensive restructuring of the eastern wing in 1889.

Address: Jägerberg 1, 06108 Halle (Saale)

The spacious banquet room on the first floor can accommodate international conferences and festive events with up to 380 participants. The Academy also has a second auditorium with a capacity of 170 seats and several seminar rooms are used for symposia and public lectures.

City of Halle/Saale, Germany

Situated in the southern part of Saxony-Anhalt county along the Saale river it is an important economy and educa-tion center in Germany.

The town was first mentioned in 806. It was an important location for Martin Luther's Reformation. In 1815 Halle became part of the Prussian Province of Saxony and has been a member of the Hanseatic League at least since 1281.

Famous sights are the Giebichenstein castle (University of Art and Design), the Moritzburg castle, the Market place, and the Handel House.

The composer G.F. Handel was born in Halle and nowadays the city hosts an opera house, concert houses, several theatres, choires, exhibitions and the annually Handel festival.

UNESCO‘s world heritages in Halle are the Francke foundation (tentative list) and the Nebra sky disk (Memory of the World).

The house where the genius of Baroque music was born and lived can be visited. Today, first and foremost a museum offering valuable paintings and drawings, historical musical instru-ments, sounds and carefully written texts telling you all about Handel’s creative work. Nebra Sky Disk

The State Museum of Prehistory in Halle is known throughout the world as the home of the Nebra Sky Disc, which in June 2013 was included in the UNESCO's Memory of the World Register. Professor Meller as director of the Saxony-Anhalt Department of Heritage and Archaeology will give a lecture about it for all delegates during the conference. But even without this spectacular find the museum is outstanding. It hosts one of the oldest, most extensive and most important archaeolo-gical collections in Germany. A guided tour can be arranged.
