Nestled in the Rhone river elbow, among vineyards and orchards, Martigny is the most dynamic town in the Valais. Visitors can discover in particular the Pierre Gianadda Foundation and its prestigious exhibitions, the Morand Dis-tillery and its renowned Williamine ©, Barryland, the museum dedicated to the legendary St. Bernard Dogs, and also the large Valais Fair, with its 200,000 annual visitors.

At the crossroads between France and Italy, and at the heart of the French Valaisian Alps, the region of Martigny will welcome and surprise you with its cultural wealth, mild climate and a wide variety of activities along the entire year : the Saint-Maurice Abbey treasure, the thermal baths of Saillon, Ovronnaz or Lavey, the ski tracks of the Marécottes and Ovronnaz, the Verticalp Emosson, the Marécottes zoo and the Trient Bisse are some of the essential attractions of the area.

An unforgettable stay awaits you in Martigny

Martigny-la-romaine (Roman Martigny) has preserved its archaeological remains, while the town of Saint Maurice ex-hibits the Abbey’s Treasure. There is art everywhere, at the turn of a corner, in the woodcut engravings on a cabin, in city roundabouts, at the Pierre Gianadda Foundation and its park of sculptures, at the Musée Marconi, along the ancient Roman road Via Francigena, in the stained glass windows of St. Maurice’s Abbey, as well as those created by Hans Erni.

The queen fight (cow fights), the St. Bernard dogs, the Fari-net vineyard and the cheese produced in high mountain pastures are some of our strongest traditions. Come enjoy them with us !

Apricots, chestnuts, asparaguses and William pears are some of nature’s real treasures !

Add some Alpine cheese slices, or the specialties of the Morand distillery – such as the Williamine© or the Abricotine – to these, plus a visit to a cellar to taste the varieties of Valaisian vineyards and you will be trans-ported to a land of prosperity, where the nice weather will invite you to have a snack just around the corner, or a meal at one of the best restaurants.

The village, located at the base of the Catogne mountain, is the home of the Durnand Gorges and of the Fountain Walk; it is also known for the open-mindedness and welcoming hospitality of its people. You won’t regret stopping by to try the world’s best gamay (a variety of grape)...

CHARRAT

The village of Charrat was created after its separation from Martigny in 1836. It is known as one of the few lands in Western Europe where the adonis (small yellow flower) grows naturally and visibly during the spring, along the Sentier des Adonis (adonises footpath). Strollers can also visit an entirely restored common oven (four banal, in French) on top of the Vison hills.

altitude : 461 m - population : 1’700 inhabitants

DORÉNAZ

Located at the entrance of the Dorénaz village are the cliffs where countless climbing enthusiasts come to practice their sport. 305 million-years old, they are considered the second oldest rocks in Switzerland. A cable-car connects Dorénaz with the hamlets of Alesse and Champex several times a day, inhabited during the whole year and working as departure points to several hiking routes.

altitude : 451 m - population : 850 inhabitants

FINHAUT

An important alpine resort in the beginning of the 20th century, the town is nowadays known for its untouched wildlife, and for the Emosson Reservoir Lake, Verticalp Emosson and its two-cabin cable-car, the steepest in the world. In the Old-Emosson valley, over 800 dinosaur tracks dated back to 250 million years have been discovered, and constitute a unique excursion.

In the heart of the village, a small church sits proudly since 1695. Dedicated to St. Martin, it works today as a showroom.

FULLY

Fully is a town which extends itself 5 miles wide at the base of a majestic mountain : the Chavalard. Ful-ly’s emblematic grape variety, the petite Arvine, grows interlaced in its sunny vineyards. SAILLON

Saillon is a remarkably well-preserved historical bourg whose scents blossom during the day. In the vineyards, among the parchets (different vineyard zones), almond trees stand alongside olive and fig trees... and aspar-aguses ! At the heart of the village, the thermal bath centre Bains de Saillon (the Saillon baths) welcomes visitors who want to relax. The Via Farinetta, as well as the Musée de la Fausse Monnaie (counterfeit money museum), celebrate the famous counterfeiter Farinet.

SAXON

In Saxon, the apricot town at the base of the Pierre Avoi, every one can create his or her own itinerary through the Sentier d’Adonis (footpath of the small yellow flowers cal-led adonises) and the Sentier de l’Abricot (apricot foot-path), with the possibility of a didactic walk with games at the Sentier Ludique, unique in Switzerland. You can also walk the Bisse de Saxon, Valais’ longest footpath. Immerse yourself in Saxon’s history by visiting its mu-seum, and join the Fête de l’Abricot, bi-annual apricot festival which takes place in the first weekend of August.

SAINT-MAURICE

Saint-Maurice is one of the cultural jewels of the Léman region. A town of national importance and key stopover site of the Via Francigena, it is listed among the most remarkable places in Switzerland. Home of a rich historical heritage, it also has a prestigious abbey, a picturesque castle built in the Rhone valley, a misterious fortress formerly considered top secret, and an enchanted cave open to public visits since 1863.

VERNAYAZ

Vernayaz is the newest village of the Valais – it was founded in 1912, after its separation from Salvan. The Pissevache waterfall seems to gush out of the mountain with a spectacular fall of over 370 feet. Vernayaz is the home of the Trient gorges, which are impressive displays of the phenomenon erosion ; it also houses the two Gueuroz bridges with over 650 feet - among Europe’s tallest.
