WELCOME TO THE 65TH SEASON OF MARLBORO MUSIC
Welcome to Marlboro, and to the 65th summer in which musicians from around the world have
gathered on this beautiful hilltop to form a collaborative artistic community.
People often ask, with so much changing in our world, how Marlboro continues to provide
experiences that mean so much to musicians and audiences alike. Some note the beauty of the
countryside, the simplicity of the facilities, and the wonderful isolation from the distractions of
everyday life. Others comment on a palpable spirit of generosity, on how our eminent artists explore
music from all periods with their younger colleagues in the kind of depth, and with the freedom of
time that are so rare today. There is also the caring and supportive family atmosphere, in which
children, young adults, and elders share experiences on a daily basis for seven weeks.
At the heart of Marlboro is a deep, abiding devotion to music. Chamber music, after all, teaches us
to listen, to make multiple voices into one, to be supportive of our colleagues, and to give fully of
ourselves — invaluable lessons for life as well as for art.
We thank you for joining our community, and for your role in making this a place like no other.

WHAT IS MARLBORO’S ROLE IN AN EVOLVING MUSICAL WORLD?
Marlboro enables gifted musicians to achieve transcendent ends.
There is an ongoing dialogue about the state of classical music today. Organizations large and small
are working to develop effective new ways to reach and engage audiences, to provide emerging
musicians with innovative career pathways and opportunities, and to achieve sustainable means of
support. These issues are critical to the field, and to the cultural life of our nation.
As the conversation continues, it is vital also that musicians understand and can share with others
what it is that is so compelling about this great art form, why for five centuries and counting it has
had such a profound impact. Marlboro is devoted to that goal, to teaching gifted musicians how to
achieve transcendent ends—performances infused with confidence, joy, insight, imagination and
passion. Music-making that cannot help but touch and inspire others.

WHY IS THE IDEA OF MARLBORO SO VIBRANT?
Marlboro “magic” is created anew each summer, with each musician contributing new ideas and fresh energy.
To the casual observer, it may seem that little has changed at Marlboro since its founding in 1951.
It continues to provide leadership training through a focus on chamber music. It maintains a
remarkable 65-year relationship with its host Marlboro College, on this lovely Vermont hilltop.
It forms a community of musicians, staff, spouses and children young and old. It invites friends
and audiences to share in the results of its music-making, and in its special mission and values.
But longstanding family members, friends and patrons know better. Each summer this
community invents itself anew, with new artists, new repertoire, new ideas and new musical
approaches. The summer schedule is ever-changing, always reflecting what our Artistic Director
and her senior colleagues feel are the most essential artistic and life lessons for the musical leaders
of tomorrow to learn and absorb. It is a constantly-evolving search to fulfill timeless goals.

WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS OF A MARLBORO SUMMER?
In essence: time, artistic freedom, collaboration, family and communion with nature.
Here, in the beautiful countryside, musicians of diverse ages and backgrounds explore music in
depth, in a way that is just not possible elsewhere. They step away from the daily routine and
demands of their profession—the frequent travel, financial necessities, promotion and performance
schedules—and step into a world built around great music and natural beauty.
For seven weeks, the musicians at Marlboro become part of a nurturing family. They play not in
order to perform, but to learn, to delve deeply into great works, and to share their love of music
with like-minded colleagues. They choose the repertoire, and they decide if and when it should be
performed. They share insights and experiences with one another at meals and social events, they
are inspired by nature, and they form lasting friendships and strong musical bonds.

WHAT IS MARLBORO’S IMPACT ON YOUNG MUSICIANS?
For especially talented young players, Marlboro is both a destination and a journey.
It is a place where they can immerse themselves in music, meet eminent and emerging artists from
around the world, request specific repertoire, test their ideas and those of their colleagues, utilize
their talents to the fullest, and share the results of their work with others.
Over the course of their time here, musicians regularly recount a transition from being highly skilled
musicians to artists of enormous capacity and potential. They expand their musical imaginations,
discover new repertoire, understand how best to get to the heart of a work, embrace more fully the
spirit of sharing and collaboration in music—and in life, and develop their ability to communicate
what they have learned with their colleagues and audiences.

HOW DOES THE PAST ENRICH MARLBORO TODAY?
Each summer, lessons in life and music are renewed, shared and passed down.
We owe a debt of gratitude to Marlboro’s founders, and to the many eminent artists, trustees, staff
members, spouses and patrons who have lovingly dedicated themselves to this community and its
ideals over the past six decades. Not only did they build a strong and respected institution, but they
set a lasting example for all of us through their commitment, spirit of collaboration and generosity.
Marlboro was created by immigrant artists who brought great European cultural traditions to our
nation and to new generations of musicians. Our goal is not to preserve these traditions per se,
but to learn the best lessons of the past and apply these, together with new ideas and fresh
interpretations, to music today. As we contribute to the Marlboro legacy, we strive to maintain the
standards of artistic excellence and integrity established by our predecessors, and to emulate their
deep and abiding devotion to music.

HOW DOES MARLBORO INFLUENCE THE WORLD OF MUSIC?
Well into developing its third generation of leading artists, Marlboro’s vision continues to inspire.
The list of renowned soloists, chamber ensembles, orchestra principals, opera singers, composers,
artistic directors and educators whose artistry and lives were deeply influenced and enriched by
Marlboro is vast. Past participants are inspiring audiences, musicians and students throughout the
world with their insights, talents, creativity and passion for music.
The modest size of Marlboro belies its enormous impact. Like a research institute in the sciences,
or a think tank for public policy, Marlboro is deeply embedded in the DNA of classical music and in
leadership training in the arts. Its musicians, goals and organizational culture set standards for the
field. Marlboro is a constant reminder that great music is essential to our lives, and that what we
give to it can never equal what we receive in return.

“She was kind and gentle and glowed from the inside.”
For more than fifty years, Martha Laredo Salomon shared with us her
warmth, generosity of spirit and infectious smile. She was a caring and
nurturing friend to so many Marlboro musicians, staff members, spouses,
children and neighbors, welcoming us into her home and into her arms.
Her marriage to Frank is one of more than sixty Marlboro Music marriages.
Martha is deeply missed and dearly remembered.
Martha’s family and friends are celebrating her life, her devotion to
Marlboro, and the many cherished memories she inspired by creating a
special fund in her honor. The Martha Laredo Salomon Endowment Fund
will enrich young artists and audiences for years to come by helping to
ensure our annual Musicians from Marlboro series at Carnegie Hall. We are
grateful to everyone who has participated in this lasting tribute.

ENDOWMENT FELLOWSHIPS
Over the years, trustees and friends have enhanced and memorialized their support—while honoring their loved ones, or even members of the Marlboro community—by
creating Endowment Fellowships Funds. The principal of these funds is not spent; instead, investment income is used annually to help make the dream of attending
Marlboro come true for outstanding young musicians. We recognize and thank the following friends for their confidence in Marlboro and their role in ensuring its future:

SERKIN LEGACY SOCIETY
Created in our 60th Season, the Serkin Legacy Society honors those friends who have invested in Marlboro through gift annuities or bequests, and also friends who have
informed us that they have named Marlboro Music in their wills. Bequests play a key role in building our endowment and in ensuring that Marlboro’s future will be as
successful as its present and its past. We are grateful to each member of the Serkin Legacy Society.

ENGAGING EDUCATION FOR A CHANGING WORLD
Both “Marlboros” believe in inspired teaching and learning that depends
on motivation, discipline and an intimate partnership between teacher
and student. At the College, as at the Music School, serious learners work
closely and collaboratively with those whose deep knowledge and broad
experience sharpen the learners’ skills and inspires greater commitment to
their chosen community.
Marlboro College is, by design, one of the smallest and most distinctive
liberal arts colleges anywhere. The College prepares our students to be
engaged citizens in a global society by:
• Setting high expectations
• Developing critical thinking/creative problem-solving
• Encouraging clear communication
• Developing connections to the world
• Practicing citizenship
Marlboro College also offers distinctive programs for lifelong learners
seeking specialized skills for career enhancement: Marlboro’s Center for
Graduate and Professional Studies, located in downtown Brattleboro, offers
graduate degrees and certificates in teaching and management. Programs
blend small classes with dynamic online learning to help students balance
their work and life responsibilities.
On behalf of the Marlboro College community, I warmly welcome all of the
musicians and audience members to enjoy the Music School and Festival’s
“quality of time” at this very special place with a distinctive purpose.
We hope that you, your family, and friends will return often.
Kevin F. F. Quigley
President, Marlboro College
Founded in 1946, Marlboro College is proud to be the site of the world-renowned Marlboro Music School and
Festival – an enduring partnership these past 65 years. The College and The Music School’s past and futures
are intertwined, but we have much more in common than a shared history and these beautiful surroundings.
Our Board, staff and musicians express congratulations and deep gratitude
to Ellen McCulloch-Lovell as she retires from her position as President of
Marlboro College.
Ellen has been a warm and welcoming presence for our summer program
throughout her eleven-year tenure at the College, nurturing and
strengthening the close collegial relationship and strong human bonds
between our institutions. Under her leadership, we have collaborated with
the College on new and improved housing and other facilities projects,
and we have renewed and extended our lease.
We are grateful for Ellen’s love of music and her appreciation for our artists
and our organization’s special qualities. It has been a pleasure to share our
performances and events with her and her husband, Chris Lovell, and other
members of the College community.. We will miss Ellen but hope to see
her and Chris often in future summers.
We send Ellen our warmest best wishes for the years ahead, and our
sincere thanks for all she has done to foster a close and positive
relationship between the College and the Music School.
A NOTE OF GRATITUDE TO ELLEN McCULLOCH-LOVELL
Ellen McCulloch-Lovell and Philip Maneval.
