Though there are other college-preparatory schools, boarding schools, military schools and all-boys schools, there is absolutely no other school like Marine Military Academy. At MMA, we proudly provide a truly comprehensive education, one that fuels the mind, body and spirit. In our structured but dynamic military setting, we teach our cadets the most important subjects of all – discipline, responsibility and, above all, leadership. We also we teach the lasting values of honor, courage and commitment.

Though physical and moral development will always be part of the education at MMA, academic excellence is still our primary focus. Our goal at MMA is to prepare our cadets so they may continue their post-secondary education at the college or service academy of their choice. We accomplish this by keeping classes small and hiring only the most qualified and dedicated faculty and staff, people who genuinely care about the success and future of our cadets.

To me, nothing is more rewarding than seeing our cadets on graduation day. Instantly you can see just how razor sharp and confident they are. They are young men with the work ethic and tenacity to reach their goals and the ability to tackle and overcome any of life’s challenges. This is the kind of education that our cadets receive at MMA ... an education that serves them a lifetime.

It is my honor and privilege to lead this exceptional school. I encourage you to learn more about our program and discover why young men from across the globe begin their future at MMA. I also invite you to visit our campus and meet our proud Leatherneck family. Welcome to MMA!

Sincerely,

Col R. Glenn Hill, USMC (Ret)Superintendent of Marine Military Academy

About MMA

Marine Military Academy is a college-preparatory boarding school for young men in grades 8-12 with an optional post-graduate year. Located in sunny South Texas, MMA is the only private school based on the traditions, values and ideals of the U.S. Marine Corps. Since 1965, MMA has been home to adolescent sons from all over the world. MMA takes young men and fuels their mind, body and spirit.

MMA’s purpose is to inspire positive academic, physical and moral growth in every cadet. To achieve this, MMA provides a structured, distraction-free setting that allows cadets to focus on their educational and personal development. Throughout this journey, cadets learn to take ownership of their lives and develop the tools they need to succeed not only in college, but in life.

The proven educational model at MMA helps young men earn higher grades, develop stronger, fitter bodies, mature and build good character, and set short and long-term goals.

History of MMA

In the early 1960s, Capt William A. Gary, an Arizona rancher and retired U.S. Marine Corps Reservist, wanted to send his son to a school that

embraced the ideology of the Marine Corps. He believed that the Marine Corps’ concepts of leadership, discipline and moral values could be successfully applied to a college-preparatory education. Capt Gary could not find such a school, so in 1963 he recruited a group of prominent Marines to start one.

Capt Gary and his supporters learned of an Air Force base in Harlingen, Texas, a city located in the southernmost part of the state. The defunct military base was used to train combat navigators during World War II. The Marines envisioned the base as a campus, a campus for an all-boys, military boarding school. Capt Gary and his team then began structuring the educational laboratory that would develop today’s young men into tomorrow’s leaders.

On September 9, 1965, Marine Military Academy opened its doors to 58 cadets; six would comprise the first graduating class of 1966. Today, MMA is home to young men from across the globe and the alma mater to thousands of alumni. MMA’s proven education model makes it among the world’s top boarding schools for adolescent males.

MARINE MILITARY ACADEMY Why MMA? »» 6

Fueling the Mind» MMA starts preparing cadets to enter college from the minute they arrive. One hundred percent of graduates are accepted into colleges or universities.

» MMA offers cadets the opportunity to earn college credit through its Dual Enrollment (in partnership with the University of Texas at Brownsville) and Advanced Placement (AP) programs.

» MMA’s unparalleled aerospace program offers professional flight training in cooperation with a qualified flight school vendor in a safe and structured environment. Cadets have the opportunity to achieve their private pilot certificate and certified flight instructor status. Aeronautics electives are also part of the academic program for an additional fee.

» MMA’s post-graduate program offers high school graduates a year of extended study in order to strengthen their academic resume and boost their SAT and/or ACT scores before entering college. Like the other cadets, the post-graduates participate in the Marine Corps JROTC program to learn discipline and focus, and set their goals for the future. They also participate in extra-curricular activities and varsity sports to explore their interests and develop their talents.

» MMA’s full-time college placement counselor offers personal assistance with career planning, college research, scholarship and financial aid opportunities, and the college application process.

» As a Naval Honor School, MMA has the privilege of directly nominating cadets each year for placement in the U.S. service academies.

Fueling the Body» Sports and activities play a large part in the everyday life of every MMA cadet. All sports and activities are not only open to every cadet at every skill level, they are required as part of MMA’s leadership program.

Fueling the Spirit» An integral part of MMA’s program is instilling in cadets a sense of responsibility to community, country and each other. Cadets put this into practice by participating in community service projects throughout the school year.

» MMA offers a variety of clubs and programs to enrich cadets’ learning experience and broaden their interests. These include Key Club, Rotary Interact Club, National Honor Society, CyberPatriot, Chess Club and many more.

» MMA’s Boy Scout program offers opportunities that help many cadets in their pursuit of Eagle Scout status. An average of five cadets achieve Eagle Scout each year.

» In addition to mandatory morality classes, MMA fosters the spiritual growth and maturity of its cadets through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, weekly bible studies, discipleship classes, mid-week chapel service and the opportunity to worship off campus in their chosen place of worship.

At Marine Military Academy, cadets participate in a variety of physical activities. A fit and strong body increases energy levels, fights illnesses, keeps the brain active and sharp, and builds discipline. Furthermore, all cadets must also participate in at least one sport or activity. Through sports and activities, cadets learn and practice the values of teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership as they have fun and maintain a healthy body.

MMA cadets are also strongly encouraged to join clubs. Clubs promote lifelong learning, camaraderie and community service. True to the Marine motto, “Semper Fidelis,” MMA cadets contribute at least 3,000 man hours a year to worthy causes in the local community.

MARINE MILITARY ACADEMY Praise for MMA »» 8

“MMA very quickly taught my son accountability – not only to himself, but to the boys in his company as well. If he messed up, they all paid. This is a valuable life lesson that still plays out today.

My son also learned quickly to look any one he meets in the eye, introduce himself, and greet this person with a firm handshake. More importantly, he, a teenage boy, can carry on an intellectual conversation, using clear speech (!), with any adult. We are more than proud to introduce our son to a roomful of adults, knowing he can hold his own, and that when he leaves the room those adults will approach us with praise for the maturity and confidence our son exudes.

Joan K. McGraw,Mother of Michael McGraw, Class of 2012

Drew was accepted to his top pick of schools, and decided on the Coast Guard Academy. Like MMA, it has small classes and a dedicated educational staff with a focus on the student, NOT on papers, presentations, and tenure. It also accepts only the best of the best, does not select students by political appointment, and, by their own admission, are the hardest school statistically to get into in the nation. And Drew was courted by them early on, a testament again to the education and training he received at MMA.

Bill HasbrookFather of Drew Hasbrook, Class of 2011

Dear Dr. Laura,

I wrote you a few years ago about what military boot camp did for my unmotivated 13 year old son. He is now 16 years old, in his third year at Marine Military Academy and was just promoted to Cadet Staff Sergeant last week. His dream is to be accepted into the Naval Academy, serve in the U.S. Marine Corps, and then perhaps go into law enforcement.

If it weren't for you promoting military school for boys, we never would have considered it nor had the guts to actually do it. I miss my son all the time, but I know this sacrifice is preparing him for a future we were not equipped to provide him. Just because we love him doesn't mean we know how to discipline or motivate him. The only Marine Corps Junior ROTC High School in the country, Marine Military Academy and their staff of all retired U.S. Marine Corps Drill Instructors know exactly how to raise a boy into a man. The expectations are high, the structure is tight, the discipline is swift, and the pride these boys have in themselves is evident by the way they stand tall in their uniforms, look adults in the eye and shake hands with confidence.

Thank you and God bless you!

R. - A Proud Mommy Type

Applying to MMA

Applications for the school year are accepted all year, but students enter at the beginning of the fall or spring semester. Acceptance to MMA is based on a number of factors: prior academic history and curriculum, discipline history, health history and, very importantly, potential. Because of the nature of the academic setting, the Admissions Committee looks for young men who have the potential to adapt to our program.

In addition to the application, MMA will be requesting other supporting documents, including an official school transcript, a recent school report card, a medical history report, immunization records, a medical insurance form and a copy of the applicant’s birth certificate and/or passport. Upon receiving the forms, the Admissions Committee will review the applicant’s file. The committee’s decision is based on the contents of the file alone unless the applicant has toured MMA and met with key academic, military and administrative personnel.

To submit an application to MMA, visit MMA-TX.org/Apply or contact Admissions at (956) 421-9252 or [email protected] to have an application mailed. A member of Admissions is always available to answer questions with the exception of weekends and national holidays.

Marine Military Academy does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color or national or ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, scholarship or loan programs, or athletic and other academy-administered programs.

Touring MMA

Although a personal interview is not required for admission, a guided tour is highly recommended as it gives the applicant and his family a sense of daily life at MMA. MMA is just a five-minute walk from Valley International Airport, the region’s largest airport, and a 40-minute drive to South Padre Island. To schedule a tour, contact Admissions at (956) 421-9252 or [email protected].
