BorntoOleandJosieBirkley,July17th,1930inMaskell,Nebraska.Mardellwastheonlygirlwithsixbrothers.SheaHendedcountryschoolwithherbrothersandgraduatedin1948fromPoncaHighSchoolinPonca,Nebraska.MardellaHendedWayneStateTeachersCollege,thentaughtfor2yearsinaoneroomschoolhousenearJackson,Nebraska.September24th,1950MardellunitedinmarriagetoMerleKurtzandtheylivedontheirfamilyfarminCushing,Iowa,wheretheyraised5children,theyalsohave15grandchildrenand17greatgrandchildren. Mardell’scommitmenttoherfaithandherfamilywasunwavering.Caringforallofthem,shewasalwayscooking,preparingfamilymealsandbakingspecialthingsforeachofthembroughthergreatjoy.Mardellalsolovedtoyodel,playtheaccordion,singanddanceabitinherkitchen.MardellwasamemberofSt.John’sLutheranChurchinCushing,whereshewasacVveinCircle,choirandtaughtSundaySchoolformanyyears.Asherchildrenbecamemoreindependent,MardellalsofoundhercallingasaNurse’sAideattheCorrecVonvilleNursinghome.MerleandMardellmovedfromthefamilyfarmtoCharMacAssistedLivinginHolstein,inAugustof2013andtoGoodSamaritanNursingHomeinHolstein,inMayof2016.
