SUNDAY MORNING 10:45 WORSHIP

March 28, 2010

Sunday of the Passion / Palm Sunday

OUR LITURGY is adapted from the Lent and the Three Days section of Evangelical Lutheran Wor-ship, pages 247 thru 257. These pages also provide some interesting background information on the pattern of our worship. Today's liturgy ends with a PALM PROCESSION, commemorating Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusa-lem. But we also meditate upon JESUS' PASSION AND DEATH. Because this story is so central to our faith, we hear Marks account of the passion today and John's version on Good Friday. Though Jesus is obedient even unto death on the cross, he is exalted by God. We gather to remember his offering for the life of the world, and to be fed by his life-giving mercy. This holy week will culminate in the celebration of the Three Days of Jesus' suffering, death, and resurrection. HYMN NUMBERS, in bold, refer to hymns 151 thru 893 in the back of the ELW.

LESSONS are found in the pew bibles. You may want to prepare your Bible ahead of time. (A note of caution - the Old and New Testaments are numbered separately, so both Genesis and Matthew start on page 1).

This is Food Bank Weekend. Please leave your donations with an usher. Thank you!

+ + + GATHERING + + +

The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

GATHERING MUSIC Oh, For a Thousand Tongues to Sing - based on Stephen P. Folkemer Mark Koehler, organ

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

*GATHERING SONG Prepare the Royal Highway ELW 264 * Please stand, as able.

Please turn to face the processional cross as it passes.

*GREETING From our God who loves us with an everlasting love, who brings forth a new creation in Christ, who leads us by the Spirit in the wilderness: Grace and abundant mercy be with you all. And also with you.

*RESPONSIVE READING Isaiah 50:4-9a THE PSALMIST SPEAKS FOR THE COMING MESSIAH

The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens —

wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught.

3

The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. I gave my back to those who struck me,

and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard;

I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord GOD helps me;

therefore I have not been disgraced;

therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me?

Let us stand up together.

Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. It is the Lord GOD who helps me;

who will declare me guilty?

*PRAYER OF THE DAY

As we now enter into the contemplation of the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ and meditate on the salvation of the world through his sufferings, death, burial, and resurrection, let us pray.

Everlasting God, in your endless love for the human race you sent our Lord Jesus Christ to take on our nature and to suffer death on the cross. In your mercy enable us to share in his obe-dience to your will and in the glorious victory of his resurrection, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

Please be seated

+ + + THE PASSION OF OUR LORD ACCORDING TO LUKE + + +

God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching and song.

READING Luke 23:1–49 Pew Bible, NT pg. 90

The long lesson today is not printed in the bulletin, but may be found in the pew bible beginning on page 90 in the New Testament. It is a portion of Luke’s account of Jesus’ “Passion,” his suffering and death for us.

To which of the dozen characters in this story do you relate?

SERMON AND NOW IT BEGINS Pastor Sanford C. Mitchell

*THANKSGIVING

Those in the congregation raise their branches.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna to the Son of David.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Let us pray.

We praise you, O God, for redeeming the world through our Savior Jesus Christ. Today he entered the holy city in triumph and was proclaimed messiah and king by those who spread garments and branches along his way. Bless these branches and those who carry them. Grant us grace to follow our Lord in the way of the cross, so that, joined to his death and resurrection, we enter into life with you; through the same Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. GIVE of my time, talents and resources

THE FINAL MARK of a disciple is that “we give of our time, talents, and resources.” Someone once said that if we love the Lord it will show in the “books of our lives.” Our date book will have times in it blocked off for worship, and service to others. Our pock-etbook will have checks marked for church or United Way, or the Ashland Cancer Soci-ety. We will try to be not “taking” people, but “giving” people. Ours is a very generous congregation, with many, many volunteers and many strong financial givers. That’s a mark of discipleship and a sign that God is using us for the kingdom’s work here in Ash-land. Then the fascinating part....it’s hard to “outgive” God. As we are a blessing to oth-ers God says, “Here, watch how I will be a blessing to you.” - Pastor Mitchell

...AS WE WORSHIP TODAY...

WELCOME FRIEND to a congregation who believes that Christ changes all things through the power of his resurrection. We hope that you have found the strength and guidance for your life in the days ahead. Please know that you are welcome here and we hope to worship with you again soon.

OUR SANCTUARY PARAMENTS this Holy Week are a reminder of the central focus of our faith - the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross for our sins thru which we obtain eter-nal life. The scarlet color on Palm Sunday and Maundy Thursday reminds us of Isaiah 1:18, “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.” Scarlet, a dark maroon-like color, is also the color of blood, reminding us that Jesus shed his blood for us on Good Friday. On Palm Sunday the altar parament displays a palm and a cross, representing the two themes for the day - Jesus coming as king on Palm Sunday but dying as a sacrificial lamb on Good Friday. On Maundy Thursday, the night of the Last Supper, the altar will show a table that in-vites us to come to the banquet too. The paraments on the lectern and pulpit also show this duel emphasis of Holy Week. On the lectern (left) the crown of thorns and the three nails used to hold Christ on the cross speak of his suffering and death, but the jeweled crown on the pulpit (right) surrounded by a laurel wreath of victory speak of Christ’s victory over death and his kingship over all creation.

THANK YOU TO OUR TRINITY BRASS
