Principal’s Report

Celebrating Cultural Diversity!

What a wonderful day we had last Wednesday to celebrate diversity within the school community. This year we combined our Harmony Day and National Day of Action Against Bullying activities. Students rotated through a series of activities designed to increase their understanding of diversity within the school and community. Students worked together in groups that combined students K-6 to create group displays which will be placed around the school as a visual reminder of the messages peace and harmony and the role they play in creating a peaceful world. Thank you to the families that were able to join us for a picnic lunch. It was a lovely day and Lismore Public School look forward to participating in a number of activity days like this in the future.

P&C Update

The Lismore Public School P&C held their AGM last week. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing executive for the work they have done to enhance the opportunities that we offer students at LPS. The P&C support the school by operating the canteen and uniform shop. They also coordinate a number of fundraising activities that allow for the purchase of additional resources, in 2018 this included additional shade tents and fitness equipment, for our students. I would also like to welcome new members of our P&C who have volunteered to take on a number of roles. Your support of the students at our school is greatly appreciated.

Additional Opportunities

This week saw our Year 5 students participate in The Rivers Secondary College roadshow when it visited our school on Tuesday. Students from smaller schools around Lismore also came to LPS to participate. The roadshow is an opportunity for Year 5 students to participate in a number of activities facilitated by secondary teachers from across the college campuses. Lismore Public School is a proud member of The Rivers P-12 Learning Community and the opportunity to work with our partner secondary schools is one of the benefits of the learning community.

Students K-6 also have the opportunity to attend the Life Education Van: Healthy Harold will share information with students about healthy lifestyle choices and positive behaviours that can support them to be healthy. Permission notes and money should have been returned to the office for students who are participating.

Roof Work Update

This week the scaffolding moved to B Block so that the roof work can commence for our Stage 2 classrooms. Students will be relocated to other vacant spaces within the school and regular school routines will be maintained as far as possible during this time. The computer room will be unavailable, except for NAPLAN platform testing, for the duration of the work.

While the roof work is undertaken the scaffolding will be extended beyond the Pound Street entrance gate at the hall. While the scaffolding is up there will be no access to afternoon muster from Pound Street. Parents and Carers are asked to enter the school for muster via the Magellan Street or Dibbs Street gates. We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your support as our school manages this major capital work.

Canteen Upgrade

Our Canteen upgrade will commence on Thursday 11th April 2019 (Week 11). The last day of operation for the canteen this

term will be Wednesday 10th

April. The canteen will be non-operational throughout the refurbishment which should be completed by the end of week 2, term 2.

PSSA Cricket Knockout

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our school cricket team who played round one of the NSW PSSA knockout competition last Thursday. Although the team were convincingly beaten they played well, demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and were supportive of their team mates and opposition. Thanks to Mr Peachey and Brian who coached the team in the lead up and on game day. They were both very proud of our team and I am told they are already preparing for next year!!

NAPLAN On-line practice next week at Lismore PS

On Tuesday, 26th and Wednesday, 27

th March students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in the 45 minute practice session

for NAPLAN to prepare them for online NAPLAN tests next term.

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy – important skills that each child needs to succeed in school and life. The

NAPLAN tests are designed to help us make sure students are on track with their literacy and numeracy development.

Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling,

grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

Between the 14th and the 24

th May our school will participate in NAPLAN Online. Students do not need to be computer

experts to take the NAPLAN test online. Making sure students have computer skills is part of our school curriculum, and

our teachers will ensure your child is familiar with the online format. To see the types of questions and interactive features

of NAPLAN Online, visit the public demonstration site.

If you have any questions about NAPLAN Online, please contact your child’s teacher.
