The System Concept

On a peak day during the 2010 FIFA World Cup SATM, in excess of 200 000 people are expected to descend on Durban’s Inner City to access the Moses Mabhida Stadium and the various activities along the Durban’s Beachfront, most notably the Fan Park. To cater for this high demand, and in view of the expected security cordons and the expected general traffic congestion in and around the City, the eThekwini Municipality has developed a Transport Operational Plan specifically for the event.

The transport operational plan is developed to encourage the use of high occupancy vehicles, existing and top up services, as well as NMT in order to gain access to Durban’s Inner City.

To this end a “Hub and Spoke” system was developed which allows for services from different areas in Durban, KZN and nationally to terminate at a central location within the City, and which is then integrated with the remainder of the services and systems.
