Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death. Hear this prayer for our sick brothers and sister whom you have redeemed. Strengthen their hope of salvation and sustain them in body and soul, for you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.

God, our shelter and our strength, you listen in love to the cry of your people: hear the prayers we offer for our departed brothers and sisters. Cleanse them of their sins and grant them the fullness of redemption. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Fr. Anthony’s Faith Formation Corner Psalm 51: The “Seasonal” Psalm for Lent

The Church has always had the practice of praying the psalms. We are somewhat familiar with the psalms because they are incorpo-rated into the prayer life of the Church. The Psalter, or the Book of Psalms, is a world-famous collection of poems: a type of classic litera-ture. However, for us Christians, their real importance lies not so much in their poetic beauty, but in their profound religious nature. One need not be familiar with the biblical historical situations from which the psalms sprang in order to appreciate their worth. They express basic human values that speak to all cultures and all ages. Anybody can re-cite or pray the psalms and find a few things that resonate with his/her daily life experiences. In the Catholic liturgy, the psalms also play an important role in the Sunday and daily masses. The responsorial psalm after the first reading is either sung or recited. Furthermore, within the particular seasons of the year, there are certain psalms that can be designated as “seasonal.” For example, psalm 25 can be descriptive of the Advent season: “I wait for you, oh Lord; to you I lift up my soul.” This is very fitting because Advent is a season of waiting and expectation. Another example is psalm 118 for the Easter season: “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Christians have interpreted that day as the day of the Lord’s resurrection.

Now we come to the Lenten season. The “seasonal” psalm for Lent is Ps 51, also known as the Miserere. It is one of the most beautiful prayers in the whole Psalter. It goes: “Have mercy on me God in your kindness; in your com-passion blot out my offense/ Oh wash me more and more from my guilt/ and from my sins turn away your face.” Obvi-ously this is an intimate prayer of one who really feels sorry his wrong doing. It is the most famous of the “penitential psalms” in the Psalter. Traditionally some of the psalms have been ascribed to King David. It was related that David composed Ps 51 (or 50, in some other versions of the Bible) after he realized that he had committed a double crime: adultery with Bathsheba, the wife of his general Uriah; and to cover it up, he had Uriah killed in battle (2 Samuel, ch. 11).

Clearly this psalm 51 expresses the author’s deep sorrow over his past sins. However, at the end of Ps 51 we also read: “For in sacrifice you take no delight/ Burned offering from me you would refuse/ My sacrifice, a contrite spirit/ a humble and contrite heart you will not spurn.” I think these verses can very well sum up the spirit of the Lenten season. People like giving up certain things for Lent because it has always been the practice for Catholics. There is a lot of merit to that. For those who do certain things excessively, this is the season when they can restrain themselves by a few acts of self-denial. And I certainly do not discourage people from giving up things. But at the end of the day, God is not so much interested in your sweets or chocolates: God takes more interest in our broken and contrite hearts. What a better thing to offer to God than our own down trodden spirits? As we go through this Lenten journey, we try to offer to the Lord our sinful hearts. We realize that we all have sinned; and yet God is always ready to offer all the chance to come back as children of his household. Have a blessed Lenten season. And do not forget to take some time to pray the psalms!

FAITH FORMATION NEWS

RCIA CORNER Last week, the parish sends the candidates to the Rite of Election. To-day, let’s take a look at the important symbols and ac-tions that are part of this important moment. Before the rite, a parish decides who among the catechumens show signs of readiness for baptism. The candidates choose one or two godparents who will be their companions in the faith. At the sending the godparents, sponsors and catechists and parish testify that they have seen God work in the lives of the catechumens. The catechumens sign their name in the “Book of the Elect”, a record of those elected and a symbol of God’s chosen people. The parish then prays for the candidates and sends them to the Bishop. At the Rite of Election, these names are pre-sented to the Bishop and after the testimony of the god-parents, they are now called the “elect”. They are given this new name and called by God to be his own and be washed in the waters of baptism, anointed by the Holy Spirit, and nourished by Christ in the Eucharist. At the rite, the Bishop hands them over to the care of the god-parent (s). After the election, we the community are called to surround the elect with prayer and support, leading them to encounter Christ.

The Mobile Dairy Classroom came for a visit to St. Barba-ra Catholic School. Mr. Steve Miller from the Dairy Coun-cil of California used Miss Melinda and Cosmo to explain the process of milking cows, the cow’s digestive process, the different kinds of cows, and the parts of the cow. By teaching our students how milk and dairy foods are pro-duced and how they contribute to healthy eating, we help our students grow into health-conscious individuals with life-long healthy eating habits. It is also an opportunity to show students the role animals play in our well being and how we must respect all of God’s creations.
