FOOD AS

MEDICINE

N O U R I S H 2 www.mannapa.org

Especially for people at acute nutritional risk due to life-threatening illness, MANNA (Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance) prepares and delivers delicious nourishing meals and counsel, empowering individuals to battle illness and improve their quality of life.

Page 3: MANNA Nourish Fall 2010 Newsletter

Dear Friends:The MANNA Board of Directors made yet another bold step forward earlier this year when it authorized increasing the number of clients we serve by 25%. This year, MANNA will serve about 2,500 individuals, 3 meals a day, 7 days a week. A remarkable feat!

The MANNA Board also supported a major initiative to conduct a groundbreaking research project, in collaboration with OMG Center for Collaborative Learning, Albert Einstein Healthcare Network and Keystone Mercy Health Plan. In short, the research will compare the health care costs for hospitalizations and emergency room visits of patients who receive nutritional care and support from MANNA to those who do not. With the evolution of health care reform in the next decade, MANNA is laying the groundwork to prove that food as medicine is part of the solution to cost-effective health care.

Once again, as you read through this issue of NOURISH, you will see what wonderful and powerful accom-plishments take place when friends collaborate, volunteer, donate, and introduce MANNA to other friends.

Thank you!

The greater Philadelphia region’s VIVA GLAM Ambassadors presented a check for $50,000 from the M•A•C AIDS Fund to MANNA on September 3, 2010, from funds generated by the

global sales of M•A•C Cosmetics’ VIVA GLAM lipsticks.

Three former executive directors of MANNA presented the first annual Nourish Awards to three distinguished recipients on May 12, 2010. MANNA Nourish Awards 2010 paid homage to MANNA’s accomplishments over the past two decades and celebrated MANNA as the nutrition healthcare leader in the region. The event was sponsored by Evantine Design and Stephen Starr Events and featured a deliciously lively supper party with amazing ambience, great music and dancing, as well as a temptingly extravagant silent auction of original art and experience packages.

“Nearly five years ago, we joined with MANNA to offer our patients three meals a day, seven days a week. Not just any meals, but nutritious meals that allow our patients to tolerate radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery. MANNA works closely with our cancer center nutritionists to develop individual guidelines, counseling and plans for each patient. It’s a terrific partnership that benefits our patients on a daily basis.”

“Each patient is different. Regardless of their resources, regardless if they live alone or with family, they need assistance with food shopping and cooking. They are not well enough to prepare the nutritionally balanced meals that are an important component of their recovery and their battle against the dreaded disease called cancer.” – John H. Glick, M.D.

President of Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute

A Client’s Narrative:“MANNA meals are why I danced at my granddaughter’s wedding!”

At the Abramson Cancer Center at Penn Medicine, patients have access not only to the very best compassionate care and state of the art treatment, but also they are at the center of cutting edge research. MANNA is proud to partner with such an outstanding institution.

MANNA recognizes the immense impact the Abramson Cancer Center at Penn Medicine has had in the treatment and care of people threatened with cancer and presented the Center with an inaugural Nourish Award in May 2010. Dr. Glick accepted the award on its behalf.

Almost a year after her diagnosis of lung cancer and her treatment at the Abramson Cancer Center at Penn Medicine, Janet S., a resident of Bala Cynwyd, has resumed her life with zest. “When a friend first suggested I get MAN NA meals I sa id ‘No, there is

someone else who needs them more than me. I can afford to take care of myself.’ Then I learned from my patient care worker at Abramson that it’s not about money. It’s about restoring strength and health.”

Janet continued: “There were days when I came home from my treatment and had no energy. I couldn’t cook for myself or my husband. But MANNA was a lifesaver. There were meals for both of us. All I had to do was heat them up.”

When Janet’s esophagus was inflamed from her radiation treatments, a call to the MANNA nutritionist resulted in her food being carefully pureed until she could swallow more easily again. The meals she received were tailored for her specific nutritional goals…to help stop her weight loss and enable her to continue her medical treatment.

Best of all, Janet achieved her dream in May 2010. She walked down the aisle, looking gorgeous, and did the hora at her granddaughter’s wedding.

If you or someone you care about might be at acute nutritional risk and in need of MANNA services, contact our client services team at 215-496-2662, x117 or x156.

A Partner’s Perspective: “MANNA essentially throws a life preserver to our patients.”

The CEO, the linemen, and everyone in between from PECO pitches in at MANNA throughout the year.

For more than ten years, employees from PECO have donned hairnets and aprons to chop, peel, stir and package MANNA meals. Over the past six years this group of passionate volunteers has been led by Maryellen White (pictured center) of PECO’s Legal Department. Keith Lucas, MANNA’s Executive Chef, says “We’re always happy to see Maryellen and the PECO crew. We know it’s going to be a good morning when they walk in the kitchen door.”

According to Maryellen, “We do what needs to be done…I can’t think of a better way to directly impact someone’s life than to offer a good, nutritious meal as they fight for their health. Our legal group volunteered more than 250 hours last year. I’m lucky to work for a company that supports and encourages volunteer work.”

In recognition of their efforts at MANNA, Maryellen and the Legal Department team won the Exelon “Energy for the Community” Volunteer Award earlier this year. Accompanying the award was a $10,000 prize donated to MANNA.

“PECO and their employees do more than provide energy. They make a tangible difference in the community,” said Rob Saxon, Director of Volunteers and Resource Development at MANNA. “PECO is a perfect example of corporate responsibility and philanthropy. They are truly neighbors nourishing neighbors.”

A Story of Volunteers:NEIGHBORS NOURISHING NEIGHBORS IS TRULY ELECTRIFYING!

A Funder’s Viewpoint:Supporting Access to Nutritious FoodClaneil Foundation, Inc. of Plymouth Meeting, PA, has been providing funds for MANNA since 1997. The Foundation has a special interest in food, health and nutrition – as does MANNA.

The contributions have been designated across a broad cross-section of MANNA’s programs: for nutritional counseling, for our capital campaign, for operating our core services…and for a very important research project happening this year.

“Our Board is interested in organizations that do cutting-edge work,” said Mailee Walker, Executive Director of Claneil Foundation. “Over the years, we have found that mindset at MANNA.”

“MANNA is one step ahead in providing nutrition for those who need it most. And another thing that stands out is that MANNA knows how to leverage their

volunteers so that their impact on the organization and on the bottom line is very real. That’s unique and impressive.”

This year MANNA approached Claneil for a grant in support of a research project to document the impact of our home-delivered meal program on health care costs, particularly in-patient hospitalizations and emergency department visits.

“The research project is a prime example of the organization staying ahead of the curve. MANNA and Claneil look at food as medicine,” continued Walker. “This study could have a huge impact on health care costs and the whole health care industry.”

More details about the research project will be presented in the Spring 2011 edition of Nourish.

In 1996, former board member and treasurer Mark Niehaus began to send a check to MANNA every month. “As treasurer, I realized MANNA didn’t have the ability to anticipate how much cash it might have available in any given month. I thought it would be a great resource for MANNA, as well as a painless way for me to donate. Whether you give a little or a lot, it’s easy and it helps MANNA to plan.”

Little did Mark realize that his caring and generous act would give birth to our monthly giving program.

Since 2005, individuals committed to MANNA’s work have made affordable gifts online which have made clients’ lives better. Over $143,000 has been raised with these recurring gifts, an amount we would like to dramatically increase over the next two years.

Through monthly support, MANNA Friends show their belief inthe power of “food as medicine” and the MANNA mission of delivering nourishing meals, free of charge, to people battling life-threatening illnesses.

Nadina shares that monthly giving is “… an easy and affordable way for me to contribute to a cause I believe in. Making the connection to providing healthy meals for someone who is sick with such a nominal donation was easy and instantly

rewarding.”

Jim and Donna tell us that “it allows us to donate at a level we would not be

able to do otherwise. If we waited until there was a lump sum

available, we would not be able to give at the level we would like.”

GET FRESH at MANNA combines a 12-month series of monthly cooking classes with a campaign to educate existing MANNA clients on the benefits of purchasing and using locally grown foods when they no longer need MANNA’s home-delivered meal services.

COOKING CLASSES The goal of the classes is to increase participants’ understanding of their own nutritional requirements and to demonstrate how these needs can be met at a reasonable cost using fresh local, healthy, seasonal ingredients that are available at local markets and farmers’ markets. The Fresh Grocer has partnered with MANNA by hosting grocery store tours led by a MANNA dietitian to help participants identify and buy local produce. Each participant is given a gift card to entice them to buy local produce.

LOCAL PRODUCE In order to demonstrate the benefits of using fresh, locally grown produce to its current clients, MANNA will enhance its client meal menu to include special soups created from locally grown ingredients purchased through The Common Market (a wholesale consolidator and distributor of local foods). Each special soup will be delivered with a recipe card that not only provides preparation instructions, but also gives information on the key ingredients and “Where to Buy” information.
