Manifestations of Pride: Talking Too Much About Yourself

I listened to a preacher one time and in his sermon he was talking about

worthless titles. What I mean by titles is simply man-made titles such as

businessman, doctor, professor, etc. Our society today looks up to people with big

names. If you put Dr. before the name Jones you automatically think, WellDr.

Jones is probably one smart cookie. But what is the ultimate title that a man

should seek for? Is it Dr, or maybe President? A CEO of a company sounds

awesome too! Some may even seek mother or father as their title to be called.

Ask yourself, What title do people know me by? And what do you desire to be

called? Even among the evangelical community people seek titles such as Pastor,

Bishop, Elder, etc. These are all good titles but it is not the ultimate title to seek for

    and to have.

Mans titling can cause a man to boast in himself. It can fatten up the skull as

though water fills up a sponge. When a man is rewarded a title and seeks his own

glory it exalts himself. It is not good to eat a lot of honey; it is also not good to

seek ones own glory. (Pro. 25:27) John Gill writes, Men should do those things

which are praiseworthy; and should do them openly, that they may be seen and

praised for them. In other words dont seek your own praise or your own glory.

Let the stranger or others praise you out of their own mouths. (Pro. 27:2)

A proud person may seek and center themselves in a conversation. Talking

too much about yourself is nothing more than pride being manifested. When one

manifests this kind of pride one constantly shares their own personal

accomplishments and their own personal qualities with others. One will brag and it

    will cause them to boast.

I ran into a woman in a Wal-Mart one day that Ive known almost my entire

life and Ive asked her, How her daughters were doing? Immediately she

couldnt stop talking about how well they both had done in college. She boasted in

the fact that one of her daughters graduated with two degrees and the other was

obtaining her masters. She was taking the titles that her daughters was rewarded

and boasted in herself basically claiming, I have such wonderful daughters.

The ultimate title to seek for and to desire for others to praise you is not

really praising you at all. In other words the ultimate title to have is not self-

centered it is God-centered. As for me and hopefully all my Christian brethrens we

should all seek being called a servant of God or servant of Jesus Christ This is

the ultimate title a man should strive to attain. God should be so moved in your lifethat everyone who thinks of you. This title pops up in their minds. That man that

man is a servant of God.

The word servant comes from the Greek word doulos and can also mean

a slave. In Hebrew; ebed can be translated into slave or worshippers of God.

Do people see you like this? Are you striving to obtain this title, not for your glory

but to glorify God? Do people see you as a worshipper of God?

All the apostles were known to be servants of God. You may say that onceGod radically change their lives they all adopted this title and lost their man-made

titles. James 1:1 says, James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. 2

Peter 1:1 says, Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ. Jude

1:1,Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ. Titus 1:1, Paul a servant of God.

Philippians 1:1 says, Paul and Timothy, the servants of Jesus Christ. A Servant

of God, now that is a title!
