NOTE:

Never load film in direct sunlight. Load it in the shadeor a shadow cast by your body.

The 120 and 220 film inserts are loaded identically. The exposure counter advances to 15 when using 120 film and to 30 when using 220 film.

Be sure to match the type of Film Insert with the film, 120 or 220, that you are using. If 120 film is used in a 220 insert, it is possible that the leader may get caught in the shutter, which could result in damage.

Before placing the film in the Film Insert, make sure that the leader paper on the take-up spool lies flat and evenly spaced between the two edges of the take-up spool.

The leader on the take-up spool should be would sufficiently tight to prevent the leader from riding over the edges of the spool.

Always align the Start Marks on the film and the Insert before placing film into the camera.

Using Roll Film Designed for Six Exposures

1. Load the film in a 120 insert using the regularprocedure. There will be seven exposures.

1. While looking through the viewfinder, adjust the focusing ring (30) until themost important part of the subject ap-

pears sharp.2. Extremely accurate focusing is sim-

plified by the split-image rangefinderspot located in the center of the focus-ing screen. Its wedge is set at a 45°

angle, making it possible to use eitherhorizontal or vertical lines of the sub-ject for precise focusing. The split-image rangefinder spot is surrounded

by a microprism collar which fracturesthe image whenever it goes slightlyout-of-focus; consequently, it is an in-

valuable aid for pinpoint focusing ac-curacy.3. The outer ground glass ring (which

encircles the microprism collar) canalso be used for focusing.Since the Mamiya M645 is an SLR, thephotographer always sees in the view-

finder exactly what will appear on thefilm, regardless of the lens or acces-sory being used.

Moreover, simply moving the depth-of-field preview lever upward will allowone to preview the depth-of-field and

appearance of out-of-focus images.

* As an accessory, Mamiya offersdiopter correction lenses which can beattached to the prism finders, and

diopter lenses for the waist-levelfinder. Near and farsighted persons

will find these accessories useful forobtaining accurate focus.

0 The LED Panel incorporated into the PD

Prism Finder simplifies exposure com-pensation, assuring perfect exposureseverytime. Each LED represents afull stop increment and plus and minussigns are indicated within the view-

finder to assist in compensating. The uppermost LED represents threeor more stops overexposure, and thelowermost LED represents three or

more stops underexposure.

e 1. For strongly back-lit subjects out-doors, set the exposure to + 1 (the redLED directly above the green one).2. To photograph a person indoors, seated next to a window and stronglyback-lit, set exposure to + 2.

3. When photographing interiors, tocompensate for the br igh t i n te r io r l i gh ts ,set exposure to +1 or + 2.

4. When copying white documents, setexposure to +2. If a standard graycard is used to determine exposure,no correction is necessary.

5. When photographing a brightly lit

subject against a dark background, such as a night club performer, setexposure to - 1 or - 2.6. Brightly lit night scenes, such as city

streets, are usually rendered mostnaturally with the correct exposure(green LED).7. When photographing extremely darksubjects (e.g. close-up of a black cat),

set exposure to - 1.

* The exposure compensation or LED

panel can also be used to increase theASA range to 3 - 51200. For example, with the ASA dial set to 25, instead ofusing the green LED for correct ex-

posure, use the +3 LED when usingASA 3 film.* Since the upper and lowermostLED’s represent 3 or more stops differ-ence from the central (green) LED,whenever compensating by 3 stops, first adjust the aperture or shutter

speed for 2 stops of compensation andthen move the aperture ring or shutter

speed dial one more click stop for 3

stops of compensation.

*The TTL metering system of your

PD Prism Finder makes it unnecessaryto consider such factors as the differ-

ence in angle of view of interchange-able lenses, filter factors, or exposureincrease for macrophotography. (Foraccurate exposure measurement whentaking close-ups, be sure to carefullyread the instructions packed with the

auto bellows, reverse ring, etc.)*In macrophotography, the amount oflight reaching the film varies in ac-cordance with the extension of theauto bellows, extension rings, etc.

Consequently, for accurate results besure to first focus on the subject beforetaking an exposure measurement,

*To prevent extraneous light from en-

Aperture Priority Method

If the Indicator Needle cannot be centeredeven after turning the Aperture Ring as faras it will go, the exposure must be adjustedby turning the CdS Prism Finder's ShutterSpeed Dial. If the Indicator Needle is toohigh, set the finder's Shutter Speed Dial toa faster speed; if it is too low, set the finder'sShutter Speed Dial to a slower speed. Afteradjusting the exposure using the finder's Shutter Speed Dial the Indicator Needle isslightly off-center, make fine adjustments byturning the Aperture Ring.

After adjusting exposures by turning the finder'sShutter Speed Dial, be sure to set the camera'sShutter Speed Dial to the same speed.

1. When desiring to set the aperture first, set theAperture Ring to the desired f/stop, and then adjustthe exposure by rotating the camera's Shutter SpeedDial until the Indicator Needle is centered betweenthe two brackets.2. Check the setting of finder's Shutter Speed Dial, and then set the same speed as on the camera'sShutter Speed Dial.

When adjusting exposures using the finder'sShutter Speed Dial, do not use any intermediatepositions; always set the dial to a full click-stopsetting.

Exposure Compensation The brackets in the viewfinder are notched at+- 2 f/stops to simplify exposure compensationfor unusual lighting situations.

When the Exposure Meter Switch is set to OFF, the Indicator Needle rests at the bottom position.

Meter Coupling RangeThe range of usable shutter speedsvaries with the film speed (ASA).As the shutter speeds shown in theshaded areas of the table are beyondthe range of the meter, the Shutter SpeedDial has a lock to prevent using a speed inthe non-usable zone.

For example, 1/8 sec. in the the non-usablezone when using ASA 800, or faster, film.Consequently, when the an ASA speed of800, or faster, is set on the finder's ASAWindow, the Shutter Speed Dial cannot beset to 1/8 sec.

To conserve battery power, keepthe Exposure Meter Switch to OFFwhenever the meter is not in use.

Whenever the finder is removed fromthe camera, the Exposure Meter isautomatically switched OFF via asmall switch built into the bottom ofthe finder.

To obtain optimum results, fol-low the same precautions out-lined in the PD Prism FinderSection.

Using the Sports Finder Using the Auxiliary Mask

With the Waist-Level Finder S in theclosed position, first raise the SportsFinder Eyepiece (B) to a vertical posi-tion. The Eyepiece Sight folds into theEyepiece Base. When lifted out out ofthe base, the Eyepiece Sight will stayin a vertical position because of theeyepiece spring. Next, lift the Wire Frame (C).

As the Waist-Level Finder Hood can beraised even with the Sports Finder Maskraised, focusing and be quickly and easily checked. However, if the FinderHood is opened first, the SportsFinder Wire Frame cannot beraised.

The Sports Finder's Wire Frame in-dicates the view for the 80mm lenses. When using the 110, 150 or 210mmlenses, the Auxiliary Mask must beattached to the Wire Frame. To openthe Waist-Level Finder's Hood when Auxiliary Mark is attached to the WireFrame, pull the bottom of the Aux-iliary Mark out to the second notch; this will prevent the Auxiliary Maskfrom blocking the Finder Hood.

Setting the Auxiliary Mask to the second notch does not affect theaccuracy of the indicated fields;therefore, it is acceptable to usethe Sports Finder in this condition. Also, when the Auxiliary Mask isset to the second notch, it is posi-ble to lower it over the closedfinder hood, although it is rec-comended to remove the Aux-iliary Mask before lowering theWire Frame to prevent scratchingthe surface of the plastic frame.

Moving Coil Electronic ShutterThe electrical consumption of Mamiya'snewly developed Moving Coil Electronic Shutter is only 1/10 that of the electro-magnetic system currently in wide use.

Moreover, the consumption remainsconstant regardless of the shutterspeed, which greatly increases batterylife.

Furthermore, battery performance ismaintained at a high level, as indica-ted in the accompanying diagrams.

The moving coil condenser is nor-mally charged, which keeps the bat-tery at peak voltage, and from dropsin voltage when the switch is turnedon.

The moving coil condenser (B) is normally charged. At this time, no current is flowing.

When the first blind moves, the exposuretime condenser (A) begins to charge. Therighthand latch holds back the secondblind. The charge time of condenser (A) is determined by the shutter speed.

When condenser (A) reaches the deter-mined voltage, condenser (B) discharges, which energizes the moving coil and movesthe second curtain latch.

Condenser (B) charges. The charge timeis very short and uses little electricalpower.

Depth-of-field refers to the total area (foreground and background) which will

appear in focus (sharp). The area of sharpness (depth-of-field) depends upon

the distance the lens is focused at, the f/stop (or aperture) being used, and the

focal length of the lens. The area that will appear sharp can be determined in

three ways:

1. The Depth-of-Field can be directly viewed on the focusing screen by gently

pushing the Depth-of-Field preview lever upward, as far as it will go. When re-

leased, the spring-loaded lever will return to its original position and at the

same t ime, the d iaphragm of the lens wi l l re turn to max imum aper ture for br ight

v iewing.2. The depth-of-field can also be determined by referring to the depth-of-field

scale engraved on the lens and which lies directly above the aperture ring. The

f/stop numbers are engraved on both the right and left-hand sides of the center

reference mark. Simply locate the f/stop (aperture) you are using and read the

figures which appear above the f/stop number on the distance scale of the lens. For example, with the 80mm f/2.8 lens focused at 10ft. (3m) and the aperture ring

set to f/16, the depth-of-field scale reveals that everything from about 7ft. (2m)

to about 20ft. (6m) will appear sharp (see photograph).3. The lens can also be-stopped down to the preselected aperture for direct

viewing of the Depth-of-Field by using the AM lever on the lens instead of the

camera Depth-of-Field preview lever. To do so, move the lever so that M

(Manual) is visible. You can take a picture in this condition while observing the

Depth-of-Field.

*When desiring to use the Depth-of-Field preview lever with the 70mm f/2.8

lens (w/built-in between-the-lens shutter), first set the shutter speed ring of the

lens to F (Focal plane shutter) index mark.

\ Using Flash

Precaution When Using FlashWhen using the X-sync terminal, besure to insert the plastic cover over thehotshoe, and when using the hotshoe,be sure to insert the plastic safety coverin the X-sync terminal. The safety ter-minals prevent the possibility of anelectric shock when using an elec-tronic flash unit.

1. Flash units may be attached to thecamera's tripos socket, the accessoryshoe or to a hand grip,2. The M645 has two sync terminals, which are used, as follows:(1) When using an electronic flash, plugthe synchronization cord into the X-syncterminal and set the shutter speed to1/60 sec. or longer.(2) When using FP flashbulbs, plug theflash cord into the FP sync terminal andset the shutter speed to 1/60 sec. or afaster speed.

(3) For MF and M bulbs, use the X-syncterminal and set the shutter speed to1/30 sec. or longer for MF bulbs, and1/15 sec. or longer for M-type bulbs.

The Prism and PD Prism Finder areequipped with a hotshoe and offer cordless flash operation with flashunits that have a hotshoe contact.

If the flash duration of an electronicflash unit is longer than 1/1000 sec.,set the Shutter Speed Dial to 1/30 sec.or longer.

Whenever using flash, carefully read theinstructions that came with the unit toavoid making errors.

Multiple Exposures Infrared Photography

When the Multiple Exposure Lever's white dotis aligned with "MULTI", the double-exposuremechanism is disengaged so that the shuttercan be cocked using the Film Advance Crank, but the film will not advance and the FilmCounter Window will not display the next frame.

To make multiple exposures, set the MultipleExposure Lever to "MULTI", either before orafter the initial multiple exposure, and thencontinue to make multiple exposures by ro-tating the Film Advance Crank, and thenreleasing the shutter.

To end multiple-exposure photography, return the Multiple Exposure Lever to its white dot (normal) position.

To release the shutter when there is no film inthe camera, set the Multiple Exposure Lever to"MULTI".

When using infrared film, it is necessary to makea focus adjustment in order to achieve a sharpimage. A focus adjustment is especially importantwhen:a) Using a non wide-angle lensb) Taking close-upsc) Photographing at wide apertures

Focus Adjustment Procedure1. The red dot or line on the right side of the centerreference line is the infrared mark.2. After focusing in the usual manner, read the distanceon the Distance Scale that is aligned with the centerreference mark on the lens, and then make the focusadjustment by turning the Focusing Ring slightly in thedirection of the arrow so that the distance observed isaligned with the infrared mark.

For information about filters and exposures, read the information that accompanies the film.

Mirror Lock-upWhen the camera is mounted on a tripod and you are shooting atslow shutter speeds, the small amount of vibration caused whenthe mirror returns to its down position may cause blurring of theimage. Mirror vibration may be eliminated by locking the mirror inthe up position before making an exposure.

1. To lock the mirror in the up position, move the Mirror Lock-up Lever (23)backwards until it is horizontal. The lever may be moved either before orafter cocking the shutter.2. With the shutter cocked, release the shutter using a cable release, and thencock the shutter, which may be done with the mirror in the up position.3. Return the mirror to its down position when you have finished mirror lock-upphotography.

For mirror lock-up photography with the 70mm leaf-shutter lens, refer to the instructions included with the lens.

Attach the camera to a tripod or placeit on a firm support. (If the camera sup-port protrudes beyond the front of thecamera body, cock the delayed shutterrelease before placing it on the sup-

port) .

1. Advance the film and cock the shut-ter with the film advance crank2. Cock the delayed shutter releaseby rotating the lever (14) clockwiseWhen fully rotated (approx. 180°) therewill be a 10 sec. delay, and when ro-tated approximately 90°, there will be a5 sec delay before the shutter is re-leased (Rotating the lever less than 90°will fail to cock the delayed shutterrelease.) When the spring-loaded de-layed shutter release lever (14) is re-leased, it will return to its originalposition, xposing the activating lever

(A)

3. Push the activating lever in the di-rection of the engraved arrow to startthe delayed shutter release.4. The upper shutter release button willmove when the delayed shut ter re leaseis activated. Do not advance the filmuntil the upper shutter release buttonreturns to its normal (raised) position.

*If desiring to stop the delayed shutterrelease after it has already started, merely reset the lever (14) and it wills top .*Even after cocking the delayed shut-ter release, the shutter can be tripped.

Time ExposuresUsing a Tripod

For optimum sharpness, we recommend using 1/125 sec.as the minimum shutter speed when hand-holding thecamera. For longer exposures, use a sturdy tripod.

1. For standard tripods with a 1/4-20 thread, the cameramay be directly attached to the tripod.2. For tripods with the larger 3/8 thread, unscrew the small screw in the base of the camera's tripod socket.Next, remove the 1/4-20 adapter (A) by unscrewing itwith a coin or straight-blade screwdriver. Finally, attachthe tripod to the camera's tripod socket.

To completely eliminate all camera movement, use a tripod, lock the mirror in the up position, and use a cable releaseto fire the shutter.

There are two methods that can be usedto create time exposures with the M645:

1. Set the Shutter Speed Dial to "B", andthen use a cable release with a lockprovision to activate the shutter. When theexposure is complete, release the lockon the cable release.2. Remove the battery from the camera.a) Remove the battery.b) Set the Shutter Speed Dial to anysetting.c) Depress the Shutter Release Button, the shutter will lock in the open position.d) To close the shutter, fully depress theBattery Check Button.

PrecautionsReleasing the shutter with no film in the cameraThe film transport mechanism has a built-in safety lockthat prevents the shutter from being released after thelast exposure on a roll of film, or when there is no filmin the camera. When the Shutter Release Button locksunder these conditions, do not force it. To release theshutter, set the Multiple Exposure Lever to "MULTI", and the shutter will release.

Mirror Lock-upWhen the mirror is locked in the up position and thecamera is outdoors in sunlight, there is a small possibility that sunlight can enter the lens, focusing onthe rubberized cloth focal plane shutter and burning it.Therefore, when the mirror is in the locked-up positionand you are photographing outdoors in sunlight, returnthe mirror to its down position as soon as you are fin-ished with mirror lock-up photography.

The position on the Shutter Speed Dial If the shutter is released with the this setting onthe Shutter Speed Dial and the PD Prism Finderis not attached to the camera, the mirror will lock up and the Film Advance Knob will not move. If thecamera is left in this condition, the battery will loose power within a couple of hours.

Photographing at low temperaturesWhen photographing at low temperatures, pleasenote the following points to assure camera per-formance:1. Use a fresh battery.2. When using electronic flash, set the ShutterSpeed Dial to 1/30 sec. or slower.3. Place the camera in the outside are only atthe moment of exposure.

When working in extremely low temperatures, itmay be impossible to wind the Film Advance Crankafter the shutter is released. If this occurs, placethe camera in a warm place, and then firmly pressthe upper Shutter Release Button as far as it goes.

A battery that malfunctions in very low temperatures, will become usable when it is exposed to normaltemperatures. The battery should not be exposedto rapid and extreme changes in temperatures.

Care of the CameraIf the camera will not be used for some time, remove the battery and any film from thecamera.

Do not store the camera at temperatures above100 degrees F (40 degrees C).

Avoid storing the camera for prolonged periodsof time in damp or salty environments.

All cameras are precision instruments, so be sureto avoid exposing the camera to shocks and roughhandling.

If the camera will be stored for a prolonged periodof time, periodically release the shutter severaltimes to keep the camera in good condition.

CleaningNever touch the lens or mirror surface withyour fingers.

Keep a UV or skylight filter on the lens to protectits outer element from dirt and damage.

If a lens needs cleaning, use an air blower toblow off any dust particles, and then use lenstissue and fluid to clean the lens.

Blowing dust off the mirror is sufficient. Do not uselens tissue and fluid on the mirror.

Periodic CheckPeriodically check the camera's functions to makesure it is working order, noting: the condition of thebattery, mirror and shutter movement, film transport, flash synchronization, diaphragm automation, etc.

If the camera is malfunctioning, take it to a qualifiedMamiya technician for evaluation and repair.
