ABA MALE SIZING INSTRUCTIONS | REVISED 091412

PRIOR TO SIZING:If the officer already has an ABA® vest that has been sized properly and they like the fit, use that size. There is NO need to resize the officer.

Prior to going to the agency, make sure that all personnel being sized will be in their normal duty uniform inclusive of their uniform shirt, uniform pants, complete duty belt with equipment loaded in all holsters and holders, and of course the appropriate undergarments.

Have the officer REMOVE all notepads, pens, microphones, etc., from all their pockets prior to sizing.

To ensure the most comfortable fit, it is a good practice to discuss typical stances and/or positions the officer may find himself in most often while on duty, such as driving, kneeling, squatting and/or sitting.

Height and weight are also extremely important factors when it comes to sizing. These measurements provide a good way of verifying that correct measurements were taken while sizing.

TOOLS YOU NEED: Soft measuring tape

Appropriate sizing forms

WHILE SIZING:Speak with the officer to determine their main concerns (i.e. fit, comfort, coverage or side closure). Make sure these concerns are within the agency’s guidelines. Be sure to engage them in the process, making them feel comfortable to speak freely about their concerns. This will make for a much more satisfactory fit. Communication is key.

If you are sizing an officer for a replacement vest, ask the officer what they liked or disliked about that particular vest. If they have their old vest with them, ask the officer to put it on so that you can give your professional guidance to achieve a better fit with the sizing of the new vest.

Take this opportunity to discuss the vest they will be receiving and its features and benefits.

AFTER SIZING:Be sure to review the contents of the package that will come with their vest (i.e. Product Guide, Strap Kit, etc.).

Demonstrate how to assemble and put on their new vest. Ensure they understand the internal suspension system and how to insert their Soft Trauma Plate (if applicable).

Remind them to complete the warranty card and send it into the address as instructed.

STEP

FULL CHEST MEASUREMENTUsing a soft measuring tape, measure the full chest to determine the front / back panel size. Make sure the officer’s chest is relaxed and measure around the back, directly under arm pits, meeting across center chest front. Take the chest circumference and convert to a front/back panel size (i.e. S, M, L, 1, 2, 3, or 4).

EXAMPLE:______ ins48”

RECORD OFFICER’S INFORMATION Record the officer’s information including height and weight on the appropriate sizing form.

STEP 22BACK

2

MEASURING BY SOFT TAPEWhen using a cloth or soft measuring tape, DO NOT pull the tape too tight. A tape that is pulled too tight can significantly alter measurements.

Take ALL measurements to the nearest full inch. If rounding is necessary, round UP on Girth and round DOWN on length. All rounding needs to be done based on the officer’s individual needs.

IMPORTANT TIPS1. To select a size, stay within the same column for all measurements. Record the code in the boxes to achieve a size. For example: a chest measurement of 48” would be a 1 (1X-LARGE) size. All subsequent measurements should be

taken in the “1” (1X-LARGE) column as highlighted in YELLOW above.

2. If you have a chest measurement (48”) on the border of two sizes (i.e. 1X-LARGE AND 2X-LARGE), you will pick the smaller size unless the girth measurement is larger than what is shown on the chart.

For example: a chest of 48” and girth of 49.5”, then you stay in size 1X-LARGE. For example: a chest of 48” and girth of > 49.5”, then you move up to a size 2X-LARGE.

IMPORTANT TIPS1. To select a size, stay within the same column for all measurements. Record the code in the boxes to achieve a size.

For example: a Total Girth measurement of 39” would be equal to an S as highlighted in YELLOW above.

2. If your Total Girth is larger than an X2, move up one size.

3. It is recommended that you round UP on girth.

STEP TOTAL GIRTH MEASUREMENT Measure waist at widest circumference in between the chest and the top of the duty belt. Add the desired overlap to the girth measurement to achieve Total Girth measurement.

EXAMPLE: GIRTH MEASUREMENT ____+ OVERLAP ____= TOTAL GIRTH ____ins.

IMPORTANT TIPS1. To select a size, stay within the same column for all measurements. Record the code in the boxes to achieve a size.

2. When measuring the front length of an officer with a protruding stomach line, measure down only as far as the point at which the stomach line crests and breaks back towards the duty belt. DO NOT over measure and go under the crest of the stomach line. This will cause the vest to be too long.

For example: a Front Length of 15 inches would be a 1X-LARGE as highlighted in YELLOW above.

Use the Front Length measurement obtained above (15”) to reference your size in the chart below. Then fill out the corresponding box with this size at the bottom of the page.

Use the Back Length measurement obtained above (15”) to reference your size in the chart below. Then fill out the corresponding box with this size at the bottom of the page.

IMPORTANT TIPS1. To select a front/back panel size, stay within the same column for all measurements. Record the

code in the boxes to achieve a size. 2. When measuring by tape, reference the Back Length Chart (as shown to the right) to help quickly

calculate the appropriate measurement for back length.3. It is highly important to make this calculation in the presence of the officer. Since you have to

round this measurement to the nearest whole number, you may need to consult the officer to make the decision if they’d prefer their vest to be 0.5” longer or shorter. Again, it is recommended that you round down on length.

4. Normally, there should be no more than a 2 inch difference in length for the front and back panels. For example, if the back panel is a 17 inch length, normally the front will be no less than a 15 inch length. If they are, recheck your measurements and ensure you multiplied the back measurement by .80 and subtracted one inch from the front measurement.
