Multiple Intelligences Addressed: Visual/Spatial, Verbal/Linguistic
Lesson Abstract: Students will review different kinds of figurative language. They will create a 6-Page Book and write examples of figurative language along with illustrations of each. Students will include a table of contents.
Materials Needed: One example for display of each of the following kinds of Figurative Language; simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, and idiomatic expressions. 12 x 18” construction paper in assorted colors, 12x 18” white drawing paper, scissors pencils, markers, or colored pencils.
Procedures:•The teacher will review figurative language such as; simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, idiomatic expressions. BrainPop link is available below. Students will be asked to generate their own examples and explain how they could illustrate them. •Students will choose their colors and make the cover for their books.•Students will fold and insert their inner pages to their books.•Students will use a pencil to sketch their title page, their table of contents, and their examples of each of the 4 kinds of figurative language. •They will use colored pencils to fill in their drawings and markers to outline and emphasize their words and drawings.•Students will share their books by displaying and reading their books to a large or small group of classmates.

Assessment: Students will create a book with an example of at least 3 kinds of figurative language. Students will illustrate the figurative language. The students should use good craftsmanship.

Figures of Speech
Simile- a figure of speech which compares two things usually using the words like or as.
“My mouth felt like a dirty bird cage.”Metaphor-a figure of speech in which two different
things have something in common. “Her fingers were frozen icebergs.”
Personification-a figure of speech in which an inanimate object is given the
characteristics of a living thing. “The camera loves her.”Hyperbole-is a figure of speech in which exaggeration is used. “I have a ton of laundry to wash!”Idiomatic expression-“It’s raining cats and dogs!”
