William Hallett’s love of painting and color began as a child in Mexico. The intense colors and atmospheres of Mexican culture impressed him deeply and influence his art to this day. Later in life, Hallett’s father-in-law, who was a professor of Graphic De-sign at Washington University in St. Louis, taught him about painting and the history of modern art which stimulated him to begin painting.

Hallett’s primary inspirations for his paintings are the landscape, architecture, and seasonal light of Maine. The variety and quality of light shifts that Maine offers intrigue him. Exploring the quality of light in paint is a constant challenge for him, especially in the relationship between Maine architecture and its coastal and mountain settings.

Most stimulating to Hallett are the possibilities of strong color and color contrasts that these themes offer. The use of intense color in his paintings is not what one usually associates with light in high latitudes and northern landscapes. However, for Hallett, Maine has intense color and contrast. Hallett’s paintings have been exhibited and sold both locally, nationally, and internationally. He has been featured in shows at Bowdoin College, at local galleries in Maine’s Midcoast villages, and in cities across the country including Philadelphia, Columbus, Ohio and St. Louis.
