MAIN PARTNER INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF VOCAL MUSIC LEIPZIG 26.04. – 04.05.2019 a-cappella-festival.com #acfl2019 Dear a cappella fans, Astonishingly, this is the 20th time that the a cappella Festival of Vocal Music has been held! To celebrate this milestone in the history of what started out as a ‘birthday party with friends’, this time we’ve only invited familiar faces to participate. Friends who’ve been a source of joy and inspiration to us over the years – and that means you, our loyal audience, as well as ten unique vocal groups! Between them, our guests have racked up a stack of awards including eight Grammys, not to mention nearly 300 years of performing experience. Above all, they excel with exception- al quality and great personality, and are all reasons why a cappella music is simply timeless. Look forward to the classical qualities of the Belgian Huelgas Ensemble and Voces8 from the UK. Get ready for Norwegian folk with Trio Mediæval as well as the majesty of the legendary Chanticleer and The Swingles! Singer Pur and Viva Voce, two of the best German ensembles of their kinds, will be appearing, and there’ll also be a chance to see last year’s contest winners: WindSingers from Hungary and Aba Taano from Uganda. Immerse yourself even further in the world of vocal music at the workshops and lectures – and dis- cover brand new faces at the 12th International a cappella Contest Leipzig. Once again, a cappella champions diversity, boundless art, and the enormous joy of singing. Old Gospel & New SwingThe Prize-Winners’ Concert at the International a cappella Contest in Leipzig couldn’t be more vibrant! On the one hand, the WindSingers from Hungary will be on stage. They’re an ensemble re-nowned for their creative exploration of jazz and their outstanding sound who aren’t afraid of ex-perimental a cappella. And then there’s Aba Taano from Uganda singing gospel and traditional songs from their homeland with enormous naturalness and a big heart to match. Their popularity last year was underlined by the fact that they won the Audi-ence Award. Look forward to an evening of intense a cappella featuring two groups with huge po-tential!

After SilenceVoces8 last came to a cappella in 2012, when they showed us their jazzy, poppy side while still rising stars in the British vocal music firmament. Having matured over the years, the ensemble will be presenting their classical programme at the 20th a cappella. And it promises to be a source of lis-tening pleasure characterized by exquisite British quality with eight sonorous voices conjuring up an extremely full sound. Voces8 will be performing compositions by the likes of Thomas Tallis, Henry Purcell, Charles H. Parry and Edward Elgar. Moreover, Voces8 will be hosting a workshop the following day at 10am in Kupfersaal.

Then and There – Here and NowWhen a cappella made its debut, Chanticleer were already a long-established legend. It was thus all the more amazing that they accepted amarcord’s invitation to appear at the festival when it was held for the second time in 1999. At this special anni-versary, it’s high time for a reunion with this Ameri- can group, especially as they’re now celebrating their 40th anniversary. Whether early music, tradi-tionals, jazz or modern compositions, this 12-strong ‘Orchestra of Voices’ is familiar with all sorts of gen-res, as they’ll demonstrate during their performance at a cappella 2019. Come and be amazed and astounded by this American supergroup!

Vigorous vocals for all the family! The five guys in Viva Voce can sing anything, in-cluding pop, easy listening, heavy metal and opera. What’s more, they can even replace the instruments! Viva Voce perform German-language a cappella music in the ultimate pop style, keeping it colourful, accessible and relaxed. This is obviously something for the whole family, so these Franco-nian singers are clearly ideal for the family concert party at a cappella! Incidentally, since the group have been singing, composing and writing lyrics for 20 years, they certainly know what they‘re doing, and will be using their experience to spice up the Sunday afternoon at a cappella for everyone!

Folk SongsThis Norwegian women’s trio was founded in 1997, the year in which the first a cappella festival took place, and quickly made a name for itself in the world of vocal music. Trio Mediæval have adapted old songs and ballads from their homeland for their compact line-up, performing them with their ex-traordinary vocal expertise. In addition, the three ladies also sing contemporary vocal music, of-ten alongside other musicians from various fields. In 2019, Trio Mediæval will be appearing at the a cappella festival for the third time to thrill the au-dience with a selection of timelessly arranged Nor-wegian ballads and folk songs.

No a cappella festival would be complete without a competition for up-and-coming young singers. In fact, there’s no better way to meet the ‘wild young things’ from the realm of vocal music. But there’s also another, very different opportunity to do so at the a cappella Showcase, still a recent addition to the festival week, at which all this year’s entrants will appear again regardless of their ranking. As well as coming fresh from a masterclass (and therefore energized by new stimulus and ideas), during the Showcase the groups will have a chance to present aspects left unseen and unheard during the con-test. All this results in a packed, highly entertaining concert highlighting a fabulous cross-section of as-piring a cappella artists in an open atmosphere. Early VersionsWhen the Swingle Singers were founded in the 1960s, they gained legendary status in next to no time with their vocal jazz arrangements of compo-sitions by J.S. Bach. In the following years, the group directed by Ward Swingle until the 1980s contin-ued to expand their repertoire and modes of ex-pression and are still going strong. Even though a completely new generation is now continuing the Swingles’ history, the group are still acclaimed for their exquisite vocal music. At a cappella, they’ll present a programme combining the famous Bach arrangements of their early years with pop ear-worms. Expect great things.

Festival HighlightsThe sounds, worlds and personalities of the 20th a cappella festival week can all be heard one last time at the grand finale – the final concert in the Grand Auditorium of the Leipzig Gewandhaus. Truly great ensembles from the previous evenings will be performing along with the hosts themselves, of course, and also the winners and runners-up of the 12th International a cappella Contest. More-over, there’ll even be a teaser for next year’s fes-tival. The final concert is always a stellar affair, so don’t miss it!
