Main Dam, Kainji Hydro Power Plant

We are focused on contributing to national development through generating electricity safely

and reliably to meet Nigeria's electricity requirements.

Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited (MESL) was incorporated in 2011 and licensed

as a power generating company MESL took over Kainji and Jebba Hydro Power Plants

(HPP) with a total installed capacity of 1338.4MW through a concession agreement in

November 2013.

The two hydro plants are cascaded 100km apart with Kainji dam being on the upstream

of Jebba.

The two hydro power plants; the Kainji and Jebba have installed capacities of 760MW

and 578.4MW respectively.

Upon takeover in November 2013, the total available capacity of the two plants was

582MW. As of today, MESL has proudly restored it to 922MW over the course of three

years. We currently generate an average 20 percent of Nigeria's power. Kainji was

commissioned as Nigeria first Hydro Power plant in 1968 while Jebba Power plant was

commissioned in 1985.

MESL is a privately-owned company being governed by a Board of Directors and

Executive Management that oversee the day to day operations of the plants.

Capacity Recovery Plan

Rehabilitation of three Units 1G5, 1G6 and 1G12 with combined generating capacity

of 340MW at Kainji Plant has been completed.

The capacity recovery through rehabilitation of unavailable generating units is

ongoing. In the Kainji Power Plant, four (4) unavailable generating Units 1G7, 1G8,

1G9 and 1G10 with combined capacity of 320MW have been scheduled for

rehabilitation. In the Jebba Plant, the only unavailable Unit 2G6 with 96.4MW capacity

is also scheduled for rehabilitation. Already, bids have been called for, received and

evaluated from reputable Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) firms for the

recovery of units 1G7 in Kainji and Unit 2G6 in Jebba in the first phase of the recovery

program. Contract for rehabilitation of Kainji Plant Unit 1G7 has been awarded and

preliminary site works has began. Manufacturing of replacement parts is in progress.

A winning bid has emerged on the process for rehabilitation of Jebba plant Unit 2G6.

Negotiations with the EPC is ongoing. The Second phase of the Recovery plan will

follow shortly with the rehabilitation of the remaining Kainji Plant Units 1G8, 1G9 and

1G10.

Mainstream Energy Solution's Power Plant in Kainji has four open pits in the concrete

structure left during construction of the hydro dam for installation of four (4) additional

generating units.

The Capacity Expansion Programme will facilitate addition of four (4) units of 120MW

capacity each, (with combined output capacity of 480MW) to the existing capacity of

Kainji Power plant and the Nigerian National Grid.

The Expansion Programme which will be executed in two (2) phases is structured to

actualize Engineering, Procurement and Installation of two (2) Generating Units with

combined capacity of 240MW in the existing pits in the first phase of the project, while

the second phase will follow closely afterwards.

Located on the course of the Niger River at Kainji gorge, New Bussa, the original

development plan for Kainji Plant provided for twelve units of 80MW each, with

projected total installed capacity at 960MW.

However, at the completion of the project in 1978, the total installed capacity was

760MW with 8 units, leaving four number open pits with no generating units installed.

Statutory overhaul was not carried out on the Generating Units at Kainji in over forty

(40) years of the plants existence, such that most of the units went out of operational

service or de-rated over the years. Presently 346 MW has been recovered out of the

installed 760 MW.

A generating unit at Jebba Hydro power plant

Jebba hydroelectric plant was officially commissioned on 13th April 1985 although

commercial operations commenced in 1983.

It has six (6) fixed blade propeller hydraulic turbines with a total installed capacity of

578.4 MW that is, 96.4MW each.

Five units are available for generation. The sixth unit 2G6 is not available due to a

major fire incident on the Generator / AVR system which occurred on the 21st of April

2009. Recovery process has commenced.

In consolidating our position as Nigeria's largest hydroelectric power plant, Corporate

Social Responsibility (CSR) is at the heart of Mainstream Energy Solutions Ltd.

(MESL). We strongly believe that being part of the communities and actively

participating in their well being is paramount as it gives us long-term mutual benefits,

which include allegiance, support and acceptability. In line with this purpose,

Mainstream Foundation was incorporated by MESL.

The key intervention areas for the foundation are; Education, Health, Environment and

Community Empowerment.
