Keeping it realGemma Arterton swept onto the big screen just five years ago when she ruled the school as a troublesome teen, having since moved on to play such varied roles as a Bond girl and a kidnap victim, the Kentish maiden insists that she’s still just a normal girl. Tom White finds out more about this talented, rising star.

L ike a cool rain shower on a hot and humid day, actress Gemma Arterton is a thoroughly refreshingexperience.

In an entertainment world filled withrampant egos and the expectation ofadulation and special treatment,Gemma is a different proposition.“The minute anyone says ‘Oh my

God! You’re so amazing’, I just have to go ‘shut up! Please!’ I am normal,”she says of her fame and success thus far, “I have just one rule - don’tbelieve the hype.”But hype is what surrounds her right

now. At 26 she has already chalked upa string of big movie hits, from out-and-out blockbusters - Clash of the Titans,Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,Quantum of Solace - to criticallyacclaimed dramas such as big screenouting The Disappearance of AliceCreed and the BBC’s adaptation ofThomas Hardy’s classic Tess of theD’Urbervilles.Yet she remains determined not

to allow her success to make her lose touch with reality - or to conformto convention.“When you put yourself in these huge

popcorn movies you get out there, inthe public arena, more than anyoneelse,” she reflects, “but that also a

Page 12: Maidstone Medway Magazine

12 mmm

a means that you’re out there to be criticised more than anyoneelse is.

“Because, for some reason, if you’re successful in Britain, people tend not to like you. But if you’re a successful woman, and beautiful, in Britain, you’reeven more disliked.”

Yet it is very hard to dislikeGemma. She is strong-minded,determined not to be pigeon-holed as a cliched female role in a male-dominated industry, and has risen from the streets of Kent to global stardom.

Although, she admits, noteverything has remained with her from her days growing up in Gravesend.

“When I was at RADA [TheRoyal Acadamy of Dramatic Art]they said I should try and changemy voice and get rid of theKentish twang. One particularteacher told me it wasn’t going to do me any favours.

“And so I did, but now it’s justfound its own ‘estuarine’ sound. It’s funny because people dojudge you by how you talk. Itcomes and goes. If I go backhome, or I’m with my Dad for 10minutes, it comes back. If I havea drink it comes back.”

She was both eye-catching and different from the secondshe emerged from her mother.Born in 1986, she hadpolydactyly - which gave her 12 fingers, undergoing surgeryto have the two extra digitsremoved.

Her parents, Sally-Anne, a cleaner and Barry, a welder, separated when she was just five years old.

Little Gemma was brought up with her sister, Hannah, bytheir mother on a council estatein Gravesend.

It would prove to be a hugelyinfluential time in her life thatwould equip her with thenecessary determination andpowerful sense of worth whichwould work to her credit in yearsto come.

“I was brought up by my single mum and my aunt, and both women were very instrumental in my a

Page 13: Maidstone Medway Magazine

a upbringing,” she says of herchildhood.“My aunt is a lesbian and very,

very feminist. I was brought up bythese two women who were veryindependent. “It was never a case of hating men

or anything like that - just that we allsigned up to the fact it’s good to bea woman.”After attending Gravesend

Grammar School for Girls, shestudied drama at North West KentCollege before training at RADA.The roles started coming in before

she had even left the classroom. In2007 she appeared in directorStephen Poliakoff’s CaputuringMary for TV. Later that year, havinggraduated from RADA, she hit thesilver screen with a starring role inthe latest remake of St Trinian’s.A star was in the ascendancy, and

a year later she beat off competitionfrom 1,500 people to star alongsideDaniel Craig’s James Bond in hissecond outing as 007 in Quantum ofSolace. The role of StrawberryFields - “the thinking man’s crumpet”as she describes the character -made sure her name becameinternationally known. But while starring with the man

with a licence to kill is a great careermove, it can also becomesomething of a weight around yourneck, pulling your future aspirationsdown and pigeon-holing you in the

minds of casting teams. When well-respected movie

magazine Empire named her winnerof its Best Newcomer Award,Gemma made sure she looked a

a to broaden her appeal and shift away from Bond. And so she took refuge on the stage with a

West End debut in The Little Dog Laughed, beforereturning to the big screen with roles in blockbusterClash of the Titans and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time as well as Tamara Drewe. In a distinct shift away from the glamourous side

of the business, she also took on a role in thesometimes harrowing The Disappearance of Alice Creed. For that and her role in Tamara Drewe, she would receive nominations for several BAFTA awards. All of which means her career is very much on the right track just now - and she has no plans

of simply accepting any old role to keep herprofile high.

She explained: “Lots of roles I’ve done in the past have served

their purpose. But I come from a theatre background

and I never imaginedmyself in some of the films I’ve endedup in.”Nor is she going

to sell her naturalbeauty as the key reason why she deserves thebest roles. In fact, when she strippeddown to her underweara couple of years ago

for a men’s magazineshoot, her mother

expressed her displeasureand Gemma vowed never

to do it again.“I suppose it was quite sexy,

but when it came out I felt awkwardabout it - like I’d done something dirty.”For now, though, there’s no stopping her. Having tied the knot with salesmanager Stefano Catelli in a secretceremony in Andalucia, Spain, in June 2010 - she keeps theirrelationship a private issue - she is now filming her latest movie. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters -

a modern spin on the classic fairtytale - which is due to hit the cinemas next year. And she seems set, thankfully, to keep

her feet rooted in reality.“We do get these amazing perks with our

jobs, like going to Paris and staying in a nicehotel,” she says, “but I still go into a hotel roomand it excites me. I go round opening all thedrawers, looking at the minibar. I don’t take any of this for granted.”Get used to Gemma Arterton and prepare

to be thoroughly won over by her. mmm

W hen planning awedding youalways start witha list - dress, venue, rings

flowers... it tends to be quite long.As the list get longer, the costs

get higher, and so things start tobe crossed off. After all, do youreally need that 50th floral piece toensure the men’s loos match yourcolour scheme? We didn’t think soeither.

But if there’s one thing youshould never, ever, cross off thelist or - even worse - replace withan enthusiastic relative, then it’sthe wedding photographer.

Professional and experienced, they are the people who capturenot only the joy and happiness ofyour big day, but also ensure youreally do remember every littlething from that overly long pre-wedding list. At least, we’ve nevermet an Uncle Arthur who’sremembered to take a picture ofthe bouquet, or knows just howmuch the bride loves her shoes torecord them before they’re worn.

Little details make your big daytruly special, and choosing aphotographer who appreciateswhat all the details mean to you isvital for helping you to remember

what will most likely pass in a blurof smiles and happiness.

You may be tempted to crossphotographer off your list whenUncle Arthur steps forward, but willhe really do justice to the dayyou’ve spent so many months - orpossibly years - organising?

Put simply, if you’re spendingthousands on your wedding doyou really want to run the risk thatyour only record of your efforts willbe a few blurry prints? Or worse, out of shadows from the snaphappy small children who ranaround the reception takingadvantage of the cheapdisposables you left on the tables?

With this in mind, we have onekey piece of advice for choosingwho will be capturing the memoryof your wedding day: Meet thephotographer first.

Not only will this allow you todecide if you like this extra personwho’ll be turning up for yourwedding, it will also be a chance todiscuss what’s important aboutyour own personal big day.

At the meeting you can chooseany specific pictures that simplymust appear in your album too soyou know you really are gettingvalue for money and not just aperson who bought a camera.

A world awayKuoni’s Siobhan Lillis discovers a Mauritian resort with a difference

T here’s no doubt that the exotic island ofMauritius is home tosome of the world’sfinest resorts.

Many of these are traditionallyMauritian, and they’re all absolutelybeautiful, but once in a while aresort pops up that’s just a little bitdifferent – and that’s exactly whatI found at Long Beach.

New to Mauritius’ east coast in 2011, Long Beach enjoys a stunning beachfrontlocation typical of manyluxury resorts on the

island, but it’s the interestingmodern architecture and coolatmosphere that provide its unique look and feel. Upon arrival, you are greeted with a wide, open manicured lawnleading out to the sprawling beach. An urban-style piazza reminiscent of a vibrant city square forms theresort’s focal point, surrounded byrestaurants, a bar and the smallfunky nightclub, Bombora. The diverse dining at Long Beachwas a real highlight. One evening, our group of friends enjoyed a Chinese starter of lamian a

a noodles, spicy lobster andmelt-in-the-mouth roasted duck atChopsticks; a grilled beef maincourse cooked right in front of us,teppanyaki-style, at the Japaneserestaurant, Hasu; andmouthwatering desserts includingcrème brûlée, tiramisu, chocolatefondant and caramel tapioca atSapori, the Italian food court. Atrue dine-around experience.Another night we sampled

tropical daiquiris by the poolbefore dining on fresh fish at theseafood restaurant, Tides. The spa looked fantastic, with

modern treatment rooms andtranquil outdoor spaces. I didn’thave a treatment but, had I spentlonger here, I would have loved toindulge with a massage in thesecluded outdoor area by thelagoon. Long Beach also caters well for

families, with sizeable familyrooms, a kids’ club, teens’ club, two large swimming pools andplenty of activities to keepchildren entertained. Most ofthese activities arecomplimentary, from a climbingwall to kayaking and windsurfing. All rooms at Long Beach have a

view of the ocean. My standardseaview room on the first floorlooked over the top of single-storey rooms out to the glisteningwaters, and it was wonderfulopening the curtains in themornings to be met with thatglorious view. The room was spacious, light

and airy, and open-plan, with thebathroom area divided from thebedroom by a half wall, with onecubicle for the toilet, another forthe rain shower, and a bath inbetween. This created clean linesthrough the room all the way outto the large, private balcony. The décor was chic and stylish,

the television was large, and thekingsize bed super comfortable. Whether you’re seeking

relaxation or looking for a moreactive escape, Long Beach is anexcellent choice. mmm

Playground ofthe rich

Think Leeds Castle is all about Henry VIII and times gone by? Thenthink again, Tom White takes a look at its fascinating recent history, which includes hosting film stars and momentous political events.

I T is easy to get lost in thelong, rich history of LeedsCastle. Easy to think ofkings and queens, battlefeasts and silver and gold.

But the footsteps you follow in froma more modern era may rathersurprise you.

From Hollywood's finest to modernday princes and princesses, thecastle's more recent past provesalmost as fascinating as that ofhundreds of years ago.

Soirees before the Second WorldWar would see top politicians mingle

with the likes of Charlie Chaplin andswashbuckling hero Errol Flynn andduring the conflict itself the castlewas transformed from privateresidence to hospital; treatingairmen who were injured whiledefending their country.

The recent history of Leeds Castlecan frequently surprise.

For many locals, the events ofSeptember 2004 within the groundsof Leeds Castle passed them by.

Yet just eight years ago it wasonce again elevated onto thepolitical top table.

For three days, the site - whichwas more used to attractingthousands of visitors amid itscarefully manicured grounds andmagnificent moat - was ringed byarmed guards and sniffer dogs.

The latest chapter in LeedsCastle's remarkable history wasabout to be written.

Because the castle, one of thejewels in Kent's tourism portfolio, was holding crunch talks in efforts to grind out a final resolve and bringpeace to Northern Ireland.

Six years after the Good Friday

Page 49: Maidstone Medway Magazine

peace deal, the peace process hadstalled and needed kick-starting.And so then Prime Minister Tony

Blair and his Irish counterpart BertieAhern entered the castle's walls andspent 72-hours in tough bargainingwith republicans and unionists.Hopes of a deal to ensure peace

failed to materialise - but leaders leftthe Maidstone site feeling"cautiously optimistic".The rest, as they say, is history.Which for Leeds Castle is more

than appropriate. Because to say itis steeped in history is as much an

understatement as saying thatHenry VIII was quite influential whenhe held court. It sweats the past from each and

every pore - and owes much to theaforementioned king for its currentplace in the psyche of both the localand wider population. His decision in 1519 to transform

it for his first wife, Catherine ofAragon, saw it leave behind itsfeudal past and elevated into aplace of splendour and envy, blessed by the most senior figure in society. This effectively cemented

the castle’s future, some 400 years after it was first built by Robert de Crevecoeur as a Norman stronghold. It replaced the earlier Saxon

manor of Esledes - from which itsname would evolve - and was nostranger to royal patronage, havingbecome a royal palace for KingEdward I in 1278.But its royal history has been

well documented and recountedmany times.Of more interest, certainly for those

who live locally, is that the castle a

a was in private ownership andthus closed to the public until a littleunder 40 years ago.It was only when Lady Baillie, whobought the castle in 1926, died in1974 that it ceased to be simply astately retreat and became a keyplayer in the community.Born in the States 1899, OliveCecilia Paget was an Anglo-American heiress. Her parents were Englishman Almeric Paget and American Pauline Whitney - the daughter and heiress of WilliamC Whitney, a financier and politicianwho had served in PresidentCleveland's cabinet as US Secretary of the Navy. When her mother died in 1916both Olive and her sister inherited afortune. Educated in France, sheserved as a nurse during the GreatWar and in 1919, married theHonourable Charles Winn. The

marriage only lasted six years, however, and before 1925 was outshe married Arthur Wilson FilmerTwo years into married life theWilson Filmers snapped up LeedsCastle. Then in poor condition - ithad stood empty for a few years - itwould perhaps become Olive'senduring romance. She invested millions of herinherited fortune into transformingthe site, taming the overgrowngrounds, and making it a home once more.A leading French designer workedon the interior, while a top architectassisted in turning areas outsideinto something to be proud of.Yet while the work continued andthe castle blossomed, again Olive'smarriage did not. The coupledivorced in 1931, but Olive retainedpossession of the castle.Again, it did not take long to find

a new man in her life - marrying SirAdrian Baillie, 5th Baronet, later thatyear, and in doing so collecting thetitle of Lady Baillie. It would herald a return to glamourfor the castle. Spending much of theweek at a house in London, thecouple would host extravagantparties at the weekends. And the roll-call was impressive.Over the years, those attendingincluded the Prince of Wales andMrs Simpson, who joined royals andpoliticians from across Europe andthe cream of the entertainmentworld; Charlie Chaplin and ErrolFlynn visited, as did DouglasFairbanks, James Stewart and, later, Ian Fleming the writer andcreator of James Bond, who lived in Kent.During the Second World War, the glitz was put on hold and the castle took on a far more a

a practical purpose - becoming a temporary hospital to help treatthe wounded.Lady Baillie and her daughtershelped treat the injured -particularly Commonwealth airmenwho had sufffered terrible burns. But happiness with Sir Adrianwould not see the war out. In 1944they divorced. He would die threeyears later. Lady Baillie would notmarry again. As with most sectors of society, the environment after the ceasefirewas different to that which hadbeen enjoyed in the 1930s. Theparties returned to the castle but ona smaller scale. They were no lessglamourous however, with theQueen and Queen Mother amongthe guests. In the 1950s Lady Baillie's healthbegan to pay the price for years of smoking, and by the 1970s shewas dependent on oxygen and aresident nurse.Aware her time was coming to anend, she set about securing thefuture of the castle and estate. She did not want her home

to be taken over by the National Trust, and wanted it to become a valuable part of the community. Thus, when she passed, she left the property to the Leeds CastleFoundation, a private charitabletrust whose aim is to preserve the castle and its grounds for thebenefit of the public in perpetuity.Explains a spokesman for thetrust: "In accordance with herwishes, the castle is kept as a livinghouse, with bedrooms that regularlyaccommodate guests at weddings, conferences and banquets. "In the last 30 years more than 10 million people have visited the castle."It costs around £2.7 million each year to maintain the castle and keep it looking so beautiful."The charity achieves this throughthe income it generates fromvisitors and events. Generally, itreceives no grant funding or any government support. Everypenny donated is ploughed backinto long-term preservationprojects."Lady Baillie died on September

9, 1974, at a hospital in London. Her estate amounted to more than£4 million and her passing sawLeeds Castle at another crossroadsin its history. No longer was it simply animposing site on the landscape -now it was a living, breathing keycomponent of both Maidstone andthe county as a whole.Today it is a key generator ofrevenues for the local economy –delivering thousands of visitors;who also come to local shops, stayin hotels and generally spend theirmoney in Kent.Since opening to the public in 1976 the castle has hostedeverything from pop concerts towedding fairs and has establisheditself as a major venue for a varietyof events, in addition to a leadingtourist attraction. But then it is the sign of a buildingof genuine significance that itcontinues to create history andcontinues to play a key role insociety, so many hundreds of yearsafter the past it trades so heavily onhave passed. mmm

you thoughtthe tablet wars were

almost at their conclusion, you haven't, to coin a phrase,

seen nothing yet.Apple's domination of the

sector with itstrailblazing iPadhas certainly hadits competitors, but none whichhave emergedas truly genuinecontenders tothe throne.Until now...Amazon, freshfrom havingrevolutionisedthe digitalbook marketcourtesy ofits Kindle, inmuch the

same way Apple did with iTunes and music, has unveiled itsiPad competitor - the Kindle Fire.It may be smaller and less powerful, but it's secret weapon isits price point. While, at the time of going to print, the UK pricehas yet to be confirmed, in the US it went on sale at $199 - theequivalent of £125. Should that price cross the Atlantic - or bewithin £50 - it is surely set to give Apple - and its £400 iPads- a genuine run for its money.Plus it sets up a rather delicious battle. Apple this monthunveils the iPad 3 - the latest generation of its touch screenbehometh - vowing to bring an even higher-resolutionscreen and a faster chip set.

The smart money is also on it having the ability toharness the super fast speeds of 4G formobile use. It may be more of anevolutionary rather than revolutionarystep, but such was the tweak betweenthe first and second generation, andsales still built at a rapid speed. The chances are, of course, thatApple will continue to build itscustomer base - especially among

the style conscious and thosewho want to be at the

cutting edge. But foreveryone else,

KindleFire is lookinglikely to provide aprice-competitive rivalwhich may just have that allimportant mass-market appeal.Granted, the Kindle Fire will not be as

fully featured as the iPad, or boast such alarge screen - it will be Kindle-sized at seveninches compared to the iPad's 10-incher - butit will come capable of displaying films, playingmusic and, naturally, buying books from Amazon-backed online stores. However its shortcomings - hard drive space is just

8Gb with no external storage options - no camera, noGPS capabilities and suspect speakersare likely to be obscured by an entryprice point which will convince even thedoubters that now is the time to take theplunge. And Apple will no doubt beconcerned - however much they maypublicly mock it.With suggestions that Amazon will

unleash a nine-inch screen version laterthis year, and the company clearlyprepared to take a big hit on thehardware in order to reap the rewardsof pushing users its digital content, it willoffer a viable option to the Apple iPad 3.And if neither the iPad or Kindle Fire

float your boat, then there's the prospectof Windows 8-enabled tablets hitting themarket later this year - promising tocome equipped with Office componentsand being hotly tipped to enliven thetablet marketplace even more.Make no mistake, 2012 is likely to be

the year when the tablet wars hot upand the customer, just for once, couldbe the main beneficiary. The iPad 3 is expected in the stores

this month - price to be confirmed butexpect entry models to be around the£400 mark.As for the Amazon Kindle Fire, the

release date for the UK had not beenconfirmed at the time of going topress, nor has its UK price. Butcurrent estimates expect itto retail around £150,give or take£25.

The AvengersRelease: April 27

Take some of the biggest superheroes, blend themwith Hollywood's hottest property, cook with amassive budget and the result may well prove to bethis year's biggest hit.The Avengers is the latest movie to emerge from

the Marvel stables and rather than just showcasingone of its creations, a whole host of charactersincluding Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, join forces to help save the world, from aliens.Among those starring are Robert Downey Jnr,

Chris Evans, Samuel L Jackson, Paul Bettany,Scarlett Johnansson and Gwyneth Paltrow.Just don't confuse it with the remake of the cult TV

A Dangerous MethodOut now

relationships between psychoanalyst SigmundFreud, founder of analytical psychology Carl Jungand Sabina Spielrein – a patient of Jung's who laterbecomes one of the first female psychoanalysts.Adapted by an Academy Award-winning writer from

an original book by John Kerr, which in turn wasturned into a stage play, the Talking Cure, it starsthe talents of Keira Knightley, Viggo Mortensen,Michael Fassbender and Vincent Cassel. What's more, it has proved a hit with the critics too

and should be one of the more intriguing reasons tohead to the cinema this spring.
