MAGLEV TRAIN

Magnetic Levitation

Technical Paper PresentationBy: Anuj Thalor & Sarvesh SharmaPresentation OutlinePRINCIPLEHISTORYWORKINGINTRO

Levitation means rise or a cause to rise

Both the track and train exert a magnetic field and the train is levitated by the repulsive force between these magnetic fields.

HISTORYINTROPRINCIPLEWORKINGWhat is Levitation ?

The first commercial Maglev "people-mover" was officially opened in 1984 in Birkingham, England. It operated between Birkingham International Airport and Birkingham International railway station. It ran at 42km/h (26mph) .

Commercial operationHISTORYINTROPRINCIPLEWORKING They work on a basic principle of magnetism i.e.

LIKE POLE REPEL EACH OTHER AND UNLIKE POLE ATTRACT EACH OTHER. PRINCIPLE

HISTORYINTROPRINCIPLEWORKINGNSSNLEVITATION The attraction from a fixed strength magnet decreases with increased distance, and increases at closer distances. This is unstable. For a stable system, the opposite is needed, variations from a stable position should push it back to the target position.Basic Problem in LevitationHISTORYINTROPRINCIPLEWORKINGStable magnetic levitation can be achieved by measuring the position and speed of the object being levitated, and using a feedback loop which continuously adjusts one or more electromagnets to correct the object's motion, thus forming a servomechanism. Germanys TRANSRAPID use this technology.

LEVITATION - Electromagnetic suspension(EMS)

HISTORYINTROPRINCIPLEWORKING In this method the magnetic field in the train is controlled using eddy currents, diamagnetic materials or superconductors

LEVITATION - Electrodynamic Suspension (EDS)HISTORYINTROPRINCIPLEWORKING

Electrodynamic Suspension(EDS)Japan's MLX01 maglev train HISTORYINTROPRINCIPLEWORKING

Maglev trains float on a cushion of air, eliminating friction. This lack of friction and the trains' aerodynamic designs allow these trains to reach the speeds of 6400 kmh theoretically with practical speeds exceeding 310 mph (500 kph)The Maglev TrackHISTORYINTROPRINCIPLEWORKING

1.The Propulsion coil running along the track, called a guideway.2.The power (A.C.) supplied to the coils is used to create magnetic fields that pull and push the train along the track.
