Walang maibenta kaya walang magbebenta. Walang produkto, kaya walang makonsumo. Walang mabili, kaya walang mamimili. Walang kita. Walang tao. Sarado. Anak ng kamote! Ano’ng nangyari?

Eto: subukin mong tumingin sa salamin. Sige nga, saan gawa ‘yang suot mo? Aha!

BENTA

Page 3: Mag YP 4th Issue: Benta

O boy, kawawang Pinoy. Kaya pala nagsara!

pang.: parokyano; loyal customer; fans club nina aling tindera at mamang tinderohal.

Page 9: Mag YP 4th Issue: Benta

Jaime Laya and Adelaida Lim, eds.

I would love to dowse for youBrandon Dollente

in this city where there is an absence of taxis and street signs that speak of a single direction. With the way the main road exceeds our concept of ends, a man sleeps, feeling oddly at home in a passenger jeepney. In this city where there is no sky undivided by veining electric wires, it can sometimes feel like a ghost town, thrown back unto its own body. Resuscitated. Breathing heavy. Heaving smoke upward. Cold wind condensing on the palm of a child. The weight of coins anchoring his dreams to reality. A dry leaf falling towards a puddle of grease. In this city hanging on the margins of Manila, named after pineapples, boasting “clean and green”, empty lots but no gardens, I would love to miss you, standing so plainly, darkening almost, beneath a lamppost that flickered when I passed.

for Jamie

C.H.A.M.P., Kagay-anon’s very own hip-hop singer/rapper was born February 11, 1985 in Manila; he studied grade school there and moved to the south, Cagayan de Oro City, where he currently lives up until now. 3rd Grade, he got his first ever tape – The 2 Live Crew – from his older brother, which ignited his love for hip-hop. At an early age he would just sit at the side and would write poems and rhymes about how he felt and what was happening around him. He got his big break last year (2009) for Community to B-Roc of Turbulence Productions. Then he met Bojam, also last year, who gave him a chance to join FlipMusic Records. It was then they recorded We Made It. He’s now almost done with all the tracks for his upcoming album that would be released soon.

Coming from the original season of Philippine Idol from then ABC5, Pow Chavez, the 5th runner up has emerged as the only survivor among the finalists who’ve come up with an all original album. What defines this artist is that despite being part of a group of balladeer performers, her musicality extends outside of what was expected of her. Pow makes way for her own craft not just in singing but also in songwriting. We’ve seen singing contest winners come and go but Pow is definitely here to stay.

TAMBAYAN

Café by the Ruins has only been around for twenty-two years, and walking inside the café cum restaurant and somehow, you sense the people it has played host to.

Café by the Ruins, to me, is the best dining room I could ever have. Its open-air dining area is so much like having a garden breakfast, or dining under the stars. As my family’s extended sala, friends and family always unexpectedly show up, and if they don’t eat, the café

ends up as the place where stories are shared, memories are recalled, acquaintances are formed, and most especially, laughter is heard.

Throughout the years, twenty-two years to be exact, the café has served everyone from the artist to the zealot. Guests have become loyal to the café and come back every chance they get to experience the food. And what makes Café by the Ruins unique in Baguio City is its emphasis on serving all-natural food

A house specialty is the salted fish roe that we make and bottle in-house. This bagoong is put in a pate that goes well with our warm kamote bread. Our signature dish, Ruins Pasta is composed of hand-cranked fresh egg noodles coated with fish roe bagoong and cream.

Along with the all-natural food choices, the café is involved with the arts. It houses monthly exhibits, which feature artists from inside and outside Baguio. On some occasions, it accommodates poetry readings, and musical and cultural events.

As I finish this story, the two grand ruin walls of the café, formerly the house of American governor Phelps Whitmarsh, bombed in World War II, face me. I start to think that history lay here and will continue to evolve over memories, relaxed atmosphere, and food for the soul.

THE TSHIRT

Congratulations Amanda Gorospe!
