Mountain Blue BirdOn February 28, 1931, the State legislature passed an act to make the mountain bluebird the state bird of Idaho. The mountain blue bird

is bright blue. It’s throat and wing tips are brown.

Syringa The SyringaThe Syringa is a deciduous shrub or small tree, ranging in size from 2–10 m tall, with stems up to 20–30 cm diameter. The flowers are produced in Spring. The usual flower color is a shade of purple (often a light purple or lilac), but white, pale yellow and pink, and even a dark burgundy color are also found.

The Appaloosa

The appaloosa is the state animal. They are usually brown with white spots. A 6th grade class in Eagle suggested the appaloosa and the governor, Cecil Andrus, of Idaho made it official on a appalossa. Appaloosa’s are good at jumping and racing.

Hagerman HorseThe Hagerman horse is the Idaho state fossil. Around 1920 some of the ancient horse bones were discovered in Hagerman. In 1988, the Hagerman horse was chosen to be our state fossil.

Star Garnet

The star garnet is our state gem. It can be found only in Idaho and India. The stone is dark red or purple. When it is polished you can see 6 to 4 rays in the stone.

Monarch Butterfly

The monarch butterfly is the Idaho state insect. The monarch butterfly has orange wings with black lines. In 1992, the legislature adopted the state insect. The only thing the monarch eats is the milk plant. The eggs are also laid on the milk weed.

You've heard of the wonders our land does possess, It's beautiful valleys and hills, The majestic forests where nature abounds, We love every nook and rill.

Square Dancing

Square Dancing Video

Square dancing is the folk dance in Idaho. It was passed by the legislature in 1989. It is usually done in a line or circle. The Americans have been square dancing since 1651.

State FlagIdaho adopted the state flag in 1907. It has a seal in the center of the flag , the background is blue with gold around the edges. The guy in the picture shows mining is important, the lady stands for purity, justice and liberty. The boy and girl are the same height for equal rights. There is a banner with our motto and words below the seal that say STATE OF IDAHO.
