Venice

Barbara Dorf describes herself as "the last of the old maids travelling to paint water-colours".

She studied at the Slade under Sir Tom Monnington, gaining a

Distinction in Art History under the guidance of Sir Ernest Gombrich and Professor Francis Haskell. Teaching followed –

enlivened by exhibitions in London and elsewhere.

Barbara Dorf’s light, atmospheric water-colours, drawn ‘in situ’, have captivated collectors including Dame Iris Murdoch,

Alec McGowan and Terence Donovan. She uses only colour to recreate the detail, scale and setting of the places that she

visits. Her favourite subject is architecture – in her view the undisputed sovereign of the visual arts. She draws it freely

with her brush, but her colour has a draughtswoman’s discipline.
