M-BRAD™ Abrasive Filament Power Brushes Safety Information, Problems & Solutions

Power brushes are designed, tested, manufac-tured, and inspected to assure quality with a particular concern for safety considerations. To promote safety, users must be aware of poten-tial hazards and their responsibilities for safe and proper operation of power brushes.

Warnings, safety requirements, and product limitations and application suggestions are printed in this catalog and in other literature, marked on brushes (when feasible), and/or supplied on or in the product container. These warnings and requirements must be observed by all power brush operators. Failure to do so may endanger the brush operator and others in the area of the brushing operation.

Protect your eyes

In normal power brushing operations, the mate-rial being removed, such as burrs, scale, dirt, weld slag, or other residue, will fly off the brush with considerable force along with the brush filaments, which break off due to fatigue.

The potential of serious injury exists for both the brush operator and others in the work area (possibly 50 feet or more from the brush). To protect against this hazard, operators and others in the area must wear SAFETY GOGGLES or FULL FACE SHIELDS OVER SAFETY GLASSES WITH SIDE SHIELDS, along with PROTECTIVE CLOTHING.

Read All Safety Information and Follow All Instructions on Packaging

You must follow all operator and safety instruc-tions, as well as common safety practices which will reduce the likelihood or severity of physical injury.

Many brush manufacturers mark some safety warnings, recommendations, and usage restric-tions directly on the product. It is not always practical to include even the most limited safety information on the brush itself. Therefore, the operator MUST READ and FOLLOW all instruc-tions supplied in or on the product container as well as those marked on the product itself. The operator should also refer to the safety and operating information printed in the brush manufacturer's catalog and other literature.

Safety Requirements Summary

1. Protective Goggles: Safety goggles or full face shields worn over safety glasses with side shields MUST BE WORN by ALL OPERATORS AND OTHERS IN THE AREA OF POWER BRUSH OPERATIONS. Comply with the requirements of ANSI Z87.1 "Occupational Eye and Face Protection".

2. Guards: Keep all machine guards in place.

3. Speeds: Observe all speed restrictions indicated on the brushes, containers, labels, or printed in pertinent literature. "MSFS" means Maximum Safe Free Speed (RPM) - spinning free with no work applied. For reasons of safety, the "MSFS" should not be exceeded under any circumstances.

4. Safety Standards: Comply with the Safety Standards of the American Brush Manufacturers' Association and the American National Standards Institute Standard ANSI B165.1, "Safety Requirements - Power Brushes".

5. Protective Equipment: Appropriate protective clothing and equipment must be used where a possibility of injury exists that can be prevented by such clothing or equipment.

Warning!

Failure to observe safety precautions may result in injury.

Availability of ANSI Standards

In this catalog, reference is made to these ANSI Standards: ANSI B-165.1, ANSI Z87.1. Copies of these standards are available at public libraries and from the American National Standards Institute, Inc. (ANSI), 11 West 42nd Street, New York, NY 10036; or American Brush Manufac-turers' Association, 2111 Plum Street, Ste. 274, Aurora, IL 60506 (B165.1 only).

Prevent Problems Due to Mechanical Failure

Do not allow unsafe condition to continue. Occasionally, due to worn bearings, a bent spindle, an unusual application, operator abuse or inappropriate use, a brush may fail. A brush which is not received in acceptable condition for trouble-free operation may also fail. Do not use or continue to use a failed brush or one which is functioning improperly (i.e., throwing filaments, out-of-balance, etc.), as this increases the possibility for further brush failure and hazard of injury. The cause of the failure should be evaluated and corrected.

= Wear protective goggles!

= Wear protective gloves!

= Wear dust respirator!

= Observe safety recommendations!

M-BRAD™ Abrasive Filament Power Brushes M-BRAD™ Abrasive Filament

M-BRAD™ Product – Features and BenefitsM-BRAD™ is a nylon monofilament that evenly encapsulates abrasive grain particles. Filaments flex to all angles, conforming to the workpiece as it is conditioned. The flexibilty of strands flowing over, around and into contours makes it uniquely effective.

Consistent, gradual cutting action lets you precisely control the degree of surface conditioning. You get the exact finish you want – from cosmetic surface preparation on wood or soft aluminum to edge-blending materials as tough as titanium. M-BRAD™ won’t degrade the dimensions of the workpiece, which reduces scrap and fill welding. You get blend and finish corner radiuses with even, highly-controlled abrading, a true radius.

M-BRAD™ Advantages – Quality M-BRAD™ Advantages – Durability

n Predictable surface abrading action with exceptional control.

n Conforms to irregular surfaces.

n Works without changing workpiece dimensions.

n Increases effective surface area for improved coatability and mechanical bonding.

n Uniform distribution of abrasive grain in each filament ensures consistent finish.

n Longer life than non-woven synthetic abrasive products.

n Light work pressure for reduced operator fatigue and longer brush life.

n Will not tear – rides over projections.

n No dressing required.

n Works without compounds; no cleaning required.

M-BRAD™ nylon filament specially formulated for strength – even when wet. Cushion effect eliminates

chatter and loss of contact with work surface.

Evenly distributed abrasive grain renews abrasive cutting edges as filament is gradually worn away.

Flexibly strong fibers cushion the working surface and allow conformity to any shape.

Unique monofilament encapsulated abrasive grain particles.

Unique M-BRAD™ Composite Filaments

Flexible fibers do not alter the size or shape of the material being conditioned.

M-BRAD™ Abrasive Filament Power Brushes M-BRAD™ Abrasive Filament Products Technical Information

Performance Dynamic Variables for Optimal Brushing Performance

Selection Criteria The criteria for selecting grit and filament size depends on what action and finish you desire. For a finer finish, use a smaller grit size – but remember, with smaller grit sizes, it will take longer to complete the work.

Suggested method: start by running .040/120 grit silicon carbide at the recommended speed with minimum pressure. If the final surface finish is not sufficiently fine, adjust to a smaller grit size to give you the micro-finish you require.

Variable Increase Decrease

Diameter n Increasing outside diameter at a constant RPM increases surface speed: SFPM (Surface Feet Per Minute). Increasing surface speed increases work accomplished.

n Assuming constant RPM, a decrease in tool diameter decreases surface speed – a solution for reducing heat and smearing problems.

RPM n Increasing RPM at a constant outside diameter increases surface speed.

n Assuming same diameter brush, decreasing RPM decreases surface speed – another solution for reducing heat and smearing problems.

Trim Length n Increasing trim length allows the filament to be more flexible, and to conform more readily to irregular surfaces.

n Decreasing trim length stiffens filament action, thereby increasing work accomplished.

Filament Size n Increasing filament size provides faster cutting action and thereby increases work accomplished. CAUTION: Coarser filament/grit sizes work faster than finer filament/ grit sizes, with faster wear.

n Decreasing filament diameter will provide superior surface finish and maximize tool life. For best results, choose minimum diameter, and increase as needed.

Grit Size n Increasing grit size provides faster cutting action and thereby increases work accomplished. CAUTION: Coarser filament/grit sizes work faster than finer filament/ grit sizes, with faster wear.

n Decreasing grit size will provide superior surface finish and maximize tool life. For best results, choose minimum grit size, and increase as needed.

Density n Increasing filament density provides more filament to do work, thereby increasing work accomplished.

n Decreasing filament density provides greater brush flexibility; leaving more room for individual filaments to conform to irregular workpiece shapes.

If brushing action is inadequate try one of our recommended suggestions. Try one at a time for best troubleshooting. Then try several at once, if none individually make a difference. See page 3.

Recommended operating RPM for M-BRAD™ Product Longevity (Wet & Dry Applications)

Surface Speed in excess of 2,500 feet per minute may produce a condition known as "nylon smear" and should be avoided. Coolants and lubrica-tion may allow the use of somewhat higher speeds. Listed to the left are the maximum recommended operating speeds without the use of coolants or lubrication.
