SECOND QUARTER NEWSLETTER, 2000 - DearBrethren: Greetings from Hawaii with news from theLord's work on Oahu and especially the Waialua Christian Church.

We continue to emphasize the wisdom of daily Bible reading. In our Books-of-the Month we have readLuke, Acts, James, the Peters, John, the letters of John,Jude, and Colossians, and in July we are reading I andII Corinthians. Usually at least 10 people sign theHonor Roll.

I wrote of Teresa and her faithful attendance andeagerness to serve. She planned and executed our celebration to honor those with birthdays in January andFebruary, and a beach cook-out for those with March,April, and May birthdays. Her son Joey tended the grill. Her greatest joy (and ours) was the baptism of Joey onApril 9. She now has a car and brings her family and herneighbors on Sundays. This means that I no longer missthe end of the class time to go pick them up.

You may heard that a rock slide cut off the highwaybetween Sunset Beach and Haleiwa along Waimea Bay.A path was built over the sandy beach which our SunsetBeach teachers walked to serve at Waialua. Then a tem

porary road was built that light vehicles could traverseat 5 miles per hour —no buses or trucks. It had a negative effect on business, schools, etc. The highway wasmoved away from the face of the cliff by filling in anarea beside the river. It was opened on June 10 in timefor our Vacation Bible School, which allowed our teachers to get there quicker.

People say that our VBSwas one of the best. JoyMarshall and our preacher, Steve Sturm, handled theopening session —singing and mission lesson. I directed the school, but knew I would be absent the last 2days, so I enlisted them so there would be continuity. Ionly made announcements and taught the Junior classthe first 3 days with Larry Ragasas' help. Then hetaught the last 2 days. We exceeded the goal of $100 for

Ninos de Mexico.

On June 151 left for a two-week visit with family inCalifornia. I stayed with daughter Leta in Milpitas, butspent time with Mark and Lora, too. The first day I wasthere, we spent getting ready for Meghan's graduationand reception afterwards. The day was beautiful. We saton the bleachers and watched as the hundreds of graduates received their diplomas. We were proud of Meghanas she marched across the platform with her yellowhonor cords and wearing a head lei around her hat justunder the mortar board. In the afternoon I visited withfamily and friends. The last time I was there, Meghan'sother grandmother had extensive cancer surgery andlater follow-up treatments. It was great to see her looking well and participating in family activities again.

Mark, Lora, David, and sometimes Leta were working, but we spent many happy times together. They allworship at the same church, so afterwards we ate outtogether. Mark had to spend a few days in Florida forLockheed, but his wife, Nikki, and Leta took me andtheir three-year-old and six-year-old to a park wherethere is a train you can ride and a carousel. Alec is enraptured with trains.

Another time we all went on a picnic. It was so enjoyable to watch the children play in the shallow stream.Even Mark waded across. They all had fun in the swimming pool at Lora's condo. We attended a communityband concert in which David played his baritone horn. Ididn't see much of him. Between his work, workouts atthe gym, and music practice, he wasn't home much. Hewas asked to play in an ensemble for "Hello, Dolly" at acommunity theater, so he began practicing there 2nights a week.

It was a busy, happy vacation. It is good to be homeagain and back at work in His service. May you findpleasure in that, too.

Yours in Him,

2000 THIRD QUARTER NEWSLETTER ~ Greetingsfrom hot, humid OahuWaianae coast. It continuesto be dry, the hillsare brown, the air sticky, and wehavehad onlya few light sprinkles on this sideof the island, but the Lord continues to pour showers of blessings. How good it is to know that He is with us whatever ourcircumstances.

Weare reading Paul's short epistlesbeginningwithTimothyand then Hebrewsthis month of September inourBo6ks-6f-liie-Mohth reading program. In tilelastquarter ofthe yearwewill read all the rest ofthe booksof the NewTestament. Probably most of those who havesigned our Honor Rollare already regular readers of theWord. Some have signed for everymonth. We hope theemphasis has encouraged others to read more often.

Allene Miller is the regular pianist for our Waialuacongregation. I do play in her place occasionally and onWednesdaynights. She willbe on the mainland over theyear end holidays. (I haven't decided yet if I will besince I had a summer vacation this year.) Two newmembers of our congregation have sung special numbers and led the singing a few times. They use guitarsand sometimes a keyboard. We older members appreciate the fact that they realize our auditorium is small, sothey keep the volume low.

It is good to have the newer people participating. Ioften teach the children when Zola is gone. She is on vacation now until October 5 visiting her sister in NewYork. Abi, wife of our deacon, volunteered to teach herclass. She has been preparing a special number with thechildren, and they performed the first Sunday Zola wasgone. It was sweet and well done. A disabled man, whorecently moved into our community and comes in hiswheelchair, offered the closing prayer Sunday.

We did have our Mexican meal to celebrate birth

days, and then another new member offered to preparethe food for the next one. We will celebrate the August,September, and October birthdays on October 1.

The neighborhood childrenwhoused to attend ourafter-school class on Wednesdays, no longer do so -some have moved away. But I pick up several of thechildren who attend with their mothers on Sunday. They are attentive and seemto wantto learn - most ofthe time - so it is a pleasure to teach them.

I also take a familyto Sunday servicesand to thesupermarket a couple oftimesa month.SoI dependonthe Lord's car to do His work. I had several problemswith it - steering pulled to the side, oil in the distributorcapwhich had to be replaced, dying at lowspeeds, and abad battery.Altogether repairs costalmost $1,500 dollars. I put the chargeson mycredit card. Knowing thebills would be due soon, I didn't take any salary in Julyand August, so the missioncouldpaythat bill. But theLord provided without my help. Twoannual gifts camein the same day which covered the repairs, and later another unexpected check covered the back salary. God isso good! SinceAmyhas been workingand her vehicleisgone, I also make the school run for her children sometimes, take them to appointments to the doctor anddentist, etc. Bettina uses it to go to her youth leadershipclass and worship practice.

I edit a monthly newssheet for our brotherhoodchurches. One of the major problems is to get reportersto send their articles. Most congregations do when reminded. A friend phoned that an excellent writer intheir congregation has said she would love to be theirreporter. I trust it will work out. Many people tell methey appreciate the news - especially those who havemoved away and miss the news from even one congregation. .

Thank you for your interest and Concern^ I appreciate your prayers, too.

Yours in Him,

MELE KALIKIMAKA AND HAUOLIMAKAHIKIHOU holiday greetings from Hawaii.

We know it is fall here. The leaves are not turningcolor, nor have we had cold rains, but we are havingcool nights, and if the sun is not shining, the house iscool in the morning. It was cloudyon ThanksgivingDaywhichhelpedto set the tone for fall. Zola usually spendsthe holidays with meand myfamily, but this yearshehadto cook fora conference be^nningthat night. Mygranddaughterhelpedher. Since Zola couldn'tcome toour house, we took pur turkey and fixings to hers atlunch time. She sat down and ate with us. When shecooksfor a large group, she often is too busy or too tiredto eat.

We had our potluck to honor those with birthdaysin November and December the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Teresa, our chairperson, knewthat wewouldallbe tired of turkey, so instead we had a southern countrymeal with fried chicken and its fixings. Among thosehonored was our preacher, Steven Sturm. Many congregations honor their minister in October, but we do itNovember because his birthday is then. He received amonetary gift from the church, and cards of appreciation from individuals. The children from Waialua whowere away have returned, so we hope that the attendance at om weekly kid's club will grow. We had visitorsSunday who indicated that their children would be joining us. We pray that they will come.

I finally decided to go to California to see my familyin the San Jose area for Christmas. I'll be there December 18-29, but only miss one Sunday here and twoWednesdays. "My children pay my air fare. I don't knowif that is their present to me, or I am their present. Weall enjoy it.

Many folks who receive this newsletter know mychildren, so they appreciate news of them which I writein this fall letter. LORA's company merged with another
