I love this season—it’s full of arts that are vital and truly life affirming!

As if you didn’t already know, I really believe in live performing arts—and I know you do too. A night of great art on stage makes us happier and more connected. It gives us joy!

I look forward to laughter from the Reduced Shakespeare team, inspiration from Rosanne Cash, the adventure of The Nile Project, and super-hip jazz from The Bad Plus.

We’ll connect with the world in hope. We’ll consider and remember—to gain insight into the future—with Judgment at Nuremburg, and we’ll find joyful exhilaration in the energy of Versa-Style hip-hop and the martial arts feats of Shaolin Warriors.

The year 2017 marks the commemoration of 500 years of the Reformation, and you’re invited to join us as we honor our namesake. Center Stage is pleased to host Calmus, with the dedicated program titled Luther’s Lieder first thing in the new year. Plus, March 31–April 2, 2017, will be a signature weekend, including Bach’s Mass in B minor (see p.10). Tickets for this luscious, sweeping oratorio are available for subscribers now, and you’ll want to to be a part of it.

Arts do indeed have a transformative power. We’re creating experiences that build on our own arts community, contribute meaning, and give you something to rave about afterward. Bring your friends, family, and coworkers to share in this celebration.

We couldn’t bring you this depth, stature, and quality at our signature low prices without the dedication of our sponsors. Please take note of these amazing neighbors of ours who are helping to craft these opportunities in the community we love.

Now, it’s time to craft your season! Everyone can be a subscriber. Claim your favorites now, along with best discounts, no ticket fees, and your favorite seats. We’re going to have a wonderful time!

Let the arts live in you!

Just in time for the 2016 presidential election, the Reduced Shakespeare Company delivers 600 years of history in less than 6,000 seconds! From Christopher Columbus to Neil Armstrong, from George Washington to Barack Obama, strap in for a 90-minute roller-coaster ride through the glorious quagmire that is American history.

In the spirit of Shakespeare himself, RSC shows contain some occasional bawdy language and mild innuendo. Consider it PG-13.

From Deke Sharon, the creative mind behind Pitch Perfect and The Sing-Off comes an over-the-top celebration of a cappella singing. Highly energetic and inspiring, Los Angeles’ Versa-Style celebrates the essence and power of hip-hop—showcasing popping, locking, boogaloo, house, and Afro-Latin styles such as salsa, merengue, and cumbia. Its signature piece, Box of Hope, uses a Motown soundtrack and vibrant choreography to deliver the message that where there are inequalities and struggle, there is also hope. Together, we can create a more peaceful world.

In its signature radio-theater style, L.A. Theatre Works brings vivid life to the absorbing and complex drama of the Nuremberg Trials—American-led tribunals formed to prosecute war criminals for their roles in the Holocaust. A first- rate cast of unforgettable characters transports us to the 1940’s to explore questions of justice and meaning: how compassion can become secondary to the rule of law and how human rights are compromised during times of conflict—issues still relevant today.

Rosanne Cash, one of America’s preeminent singer-songwriters, collaborates with husband and co-writer John Leventhal to tour her three-time Grammy Award-winning latest release, The River & the Thread. This album has been called “the crowning masterpiece” of her 35-year career, and its captivating exploration of the South prompted the Boston Globe to pronounce she has “come full circle as a storyteller of exceptional grace and grit.”

This charming and flawless a cappella quintet embodies the rich choral tradition of its hometown of Leipzig, Germany, the city so closely associated with Bach and Mendelssohn. In anticipation of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, Calmus has created a unique and entertaining program of choral-motets remarkably crafted from diverse music connected to the songs of Martin Luther.

This wildly popular theatrical experience brings to the stage the remarkable skill, stunning artistry, and death-defying martial-arts prowess of more than 20 kung fu masters. Performing unbelievable feats of athleticism that seem possible only in movies, these artists “combine the agility and grace of gymnasts with the showmanship of Cirque du Soleil performers” (Washington Post).

The Bad Plus—bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson, and drummer David King—have Minnesota roots and a well-earned reputation for pushing the musical limits. Through almost 15 years and 14 albums, they have thrived at the intersection of jazz, indie rock, and iconoclast covers of artists, inspiring Rolling Stone to call them “about as badass as highbrow gets.”
