An autoimmune disease of complex nature falling within the same family as rheumatology where the bodies immune system turns against itself and attacks it.

A chronic, systemic, inflammatory disease of the connective tissue. Although chronic, often has acute phases.

Can affect the joints, skin, kidneys, blood, lungs, musculoskeletal system, brain, heart, blood vessels and other organs/systems in the body.

Characterized by varied symptoms injuring different parts of the body.

Symptoms differ patient to patient. Patients commonly present without episodes of flare ups intermingled with periods of remission that might not include a single symptom. Some patients may not ever have symptoms.

Cause: unknown/environmental/congenital Cure: undiscovered

TCM Etiology + Chinese Herbs: Heat Toxin-Sx: Sudden onset, high fever, flushed face, fresh red skin rash, purpura,

irritability, thirst, coma, delirium (severe cases), arthralgia, constipation, scanty/dark urine, deep red tongue with yellow greasy fur, full and rapid or bowstring and rapid pulse.

*Rx: Qing Ying Tang modified: Shui Niu Jiao (taken in ground form after the following herbs are decocted in water), Shu Di, Chi Shao, Mu Dan Pi, Shi Gao, Zhi Mu, Xuan Shen, Jin Yi Hua, Lian Qiao, Zi Cao, Mai Men Dong, Dan Zhu Ye

Internal Heat due to Yin-Deficiency-Sx: Low-grade fever in the PM, feverish sensation in palms and soles, deep red skin eruptions, night sweats, fatigue, irritability, arthralgia with aching of joints, soreness of waist, balding pattern, red tongue with thin yellow fur or mirror tongue, thready and rapid pulse.

*Rx: Qing Hao, Yin Chai Hu, Di Gu Pi, Hu Huang Lian, Sheng Di, Xuan Shen, Zhi Mu, Huang Bai, Zhi Tian Nan Xing, Mai Men Dong, Bie Jia, Gan Cao

Deficiency of the Spleen and Kidney Yang-Sx: Pale complexion, puffy face, edema of limbs, distended abdomen, cold extremities, shortness of breath, dislikes speaking, urinary difficulty, loose stool, pale tongue with whitish moist fur, deep and thready or thready and weak pulse.

*Rx: Er Xian Tang + Wu Ling San modified: Xian Mao, Yin Yang Huo, Huang Qi, Tu Si Zi, Dang Shen, Gui Zhi, Zhu Ling, Fu Ling, Ze Xie, Bai Zhu, Dan Zhu Ye
